The comfort of this dunyaa should only make us more humble

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Compare your `Ibaadah when you are in comfort and at the times of distress. Verily the difference is really great. The eagerness to worship Allaah sincerely is more in the times of distress than in the times of comfort. The tears flow readily in distress than in comfort.

When the Dunyaa and its comfort over powers man, he tends to lose the grip on his faith and starts forgetting the purpose of his creation (even if it is for a short period):

Allaah تعالى says:

{They (the things the people worshiped besides Allaah) will say: “Glorified are You (O Allaah)! It was not for us to take any Auliyaa’ (Protectors, Helpers) besides You, but You gave them (the people) and their fathers comfort till they forgot the warning, and became a lost people (doomed to total loss).”} [Surah al-Furqaan (25): 18]

And when the purpose is forgotten, then wait for the punishment:

{Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health (with calamities) so that they might humble themselves (believe with humility). When Our torment reached them, why then did they not humble themselves (believe with humility)? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitaan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do. So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened for them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them (in punishment), and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.} [Surah al-An`aam (6):42-44]

That’s why the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever would be pleased to have Allaah respond to him during hardship and disaster should make much Du`aa’ in times of ease.” [Tirmidhee (3383) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

The comforts and blessings should only make us more humble:

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to offer prayer at night (for such a long time) that his feet used to crack. I said: “O Allaah’s Apostle! Why do you do it since Allaah has forgiven you your faults of the past and those to follow?" He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Shouldn't I love to be a thankful slave (of Allaah)?” When he became old, he صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed while sitting, but if he wanted to perform a bowing (Rukoo`), he would get up, recite (some more verses) and then perform the bowing. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4837) and Saheeh Muslim (2820)].
