Times when it’s prescribed to send prayers upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم:

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله ، وبـعـد

After the Tashahhud in the prayers:

Once, “he صلى الله عليه وسلم heard a man supplicating in his prayer without glorifying the majesty of Allaah تعالى, nor sending prayers on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, so he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “This man has been hasty.” He صلى الله عليه وسلم then called him and said to him and others: “When one of you prays, he should begin with the praise of his Lord, Sublime and Mighty, and his exultation, and then send prayers (in one narration: he should send prayers) on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and then supplicate as he wishes.” [Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Abu Dawood (1481), Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3477) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Also, “he صلى الله عليه وسلم heard a man glorifying and praising Allaah, and sending prayers on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in prayer, so the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him: “Supplicate, and you will be answered; ask, and you will be given.” [Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (1284) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

It should be known that this Hadeeth proves that Salaah (sending prayers) on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in this Tashahhud is obligatory, due to the command about it. This opinion was taken by Imaam al-Shaafi`ee and by Imaam Ahmad in the later of the two narrations from him, and before them by several Companions, as well as other people of knowledge. Because of this, Aajuri said in Sharee`ah (p. 415): “He who does not send prayers on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the final tashahhud must repeat the prayer.” [See Sifat al-Salaat un-Nabiy صلى الله عليه وسلم by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

In Salaat al-Janaazah, after the second Takbeer:

Abu Umaamah narrated on the authority of a Companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم:

“The Sunnah in Salaat al-Janaazah is that the Imaam should make the opening Takbeer and then silently recite Surah al-Faatihah after the first Takbeer, and then (after the second Takbeer) he should send prayers upon the Prophet صلى الله علي وسلم. He should then supplicate for the deceased after the (third) Takbeer. He should not recite anything (after the fourth Takbeer) and then make the Tasleem (on the right side upon finishing his prayer – and the Sunnah is that the followers in the prayer should do the same as the Imaam)”

[Reported by Imaam al-Shaafi`ee in al-Umm (1/239-240) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Ahkaam al-Janaaiz (155) as well as in al-Irwaa’ (734). It was also graded as “Saheeh” by Ibn al-Qayyim in Jalaa’ al-Afhaam (192) and by Ibn Hajar in al-Futoohaat al-Rabbaaniyyah (2/223)]

After the Adhaan and before making the Du`aa for Waseelah:

`Abdullaah bin `Amr bin al-`Aas رضي الله عنهما reported Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم as saying:

“When you hear the Mu`adhdhin, repeat what he says, then send prayers upon me, for everyone who sends prayer upon me will receive ten blessings from Allaah; then beg from Allaah al-Waseelah for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allaah’s servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Waseelah, he will be assured of my intercession.”

[Saheeh Muslim (384)]

Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Increase your prayers upon me, for verily Allaah تعالى will appoint for me an Angel near my grave. Whenever a person from my Ummah sends prayer upon me, that Angel will say to me: ‘O Muhammad! So-and-so has send prayers upon at such-and-such time.’”

On Fridays:

Narrated Aws ibn Aws رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Aadam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me. The people asked: O Messenger of Allaah! How can it be that our blessings will be submitted to you while your body is decayed? He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: Allaah تعالى has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of Prophets.”

[Sunan Abu Dawood (1047) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Before making Du`aa:

Fadhaalah bin Ubaid رضي الله عنه narrated: While the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم was seated, a man entered and performed the Salaah, and he said: ‘O Allaah! Forgive me, and have mercy upon me.’ The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“You have rushed, O praying person. When you perform Salaah, and then sit, then praise Allaah تعالى with what He تعالى is deserving of, and send prayers upon me, then call upon Him تعالى.”
He (Fadhaalah) said: Then another man performed the Salaah after that, so he praised Allaah and sent prayers upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him:

“O praying person! Supplicate, and you shall be answered.”

[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3476) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

For seeking forgiveness and during calamities:

Ubayy bin Ka`b رضي الله عنه narrated: When a third of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم stood and said:

“O you people! Remember Allaah! Remember Allaah! The Raajifah (violent commotion i.e. the first blowing of the trumpet) is coming, followed by the Raadifah (the second blowing of the trumpet); death and what it brings is coming, death and what it brings is coming!”

I said: O Messenger of Allaah! Indeed I send a lot of prayers upon you. How much of my prayers should I make for you? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“As you wish.”

I said: A fourth? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“As you wish. But if you add more it would be better for you.”

I said: Then half? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“As you wish. And if you add more it would be better [for you].”

I said: Then two-thirds? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“As you wish, but if you add more it would be better for you.”

I said: Should I make all of my prayers for you? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Then your problems would be solved and your sins would be forgiven.”

[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2457) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee and also graded as “Hasan” By Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baaree (11/168)]

In every gathering:

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Those people who sit together but do not remember Allaah in their gathering, nor sent prayers upon their Prophet, except it will be a source of remorse for them. If He تعالى wills, He will punish the, and if He تعالى wills, He will forgive them.”
