Du`aa and Husn al-Dhann bil-laah (having good thoughts about Allaah)

The best thing that you can ask Allaah سبحانه وتعالى – after beseeching Him for Jannah and seeking protection from the Hellfire – is that you beseech Him for forgiveness for your sins. There is nothing heavier on the shoulders of the children of Aadam than the weight of sins. And these sins, as Allaah تعالى mentioned in the Qur’aan, are “Wizr” (a burden), and no one can remove them except the All-Knowing Creator, the One who is capable of forgiving them.

The Prophet taught Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه to say:

Allaahumma innee dhalamtu nafsee dhulman katheeraa, wa laa yaghfirudhunooba illaa ant, faghfirlee maghfiratan min `indika, war-hamnee innaka antal-Ghafoor-ur-Raheem

O Allaah, verily I have wronged myself much and there is None who forgives sins except You. Grant me forgiveness from You and have mercy on me, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
📚[Saheehain. Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq said to the Prophet : “O Allaah's Messenger ! Teach me an invocation with which I may invoke Allaah in my prayers.” So the Prophet taught him the above…]

So we should take from this advice of the Prophet to Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq and repeat the same in our prayers.

Sometimes, a person despairs for a thing which he wants; and in other situations, the fear overpowers a person. This is where a person’s true relationship with Allaah becomes evident.

Some people, when they despair for a thing, they - even before they start making the Du`aa or at the time of making the Du`aa - feel that the thing that they are seeking won’t be given to them. So, they either make less Du`aa or abstain from making it all together - having bad thoughts about Allaah عز وجل that He won’t give it to them or that it won’t happen.

And some people, when fear overpowers them, they abstain from making Du`aa - having bad thoughts about Allaah عز وجل that He won’t relieve them of the suffering.

Who makes the most Du`aa? Only those who have good thoughts about Allaah!

What is the meaning of “Husn al-Dhann bil-laah (having good thoughts about Allaah)”?!

It is not like how some do without contemplating! They just think that Allaah is the Most Merciful and they stop at it. This is not sufficient!

“Having good thoughts about Allaah”, means: that you foremost know and believe that Allaah عز وجل is capable of doing it and that He has power over all things; and thereafter you believe that He is the Most Merciful. But before that, you must know that Allaah is capable and has power over all things.

When you are suffering or are distressed, even those – from the children of Aadam – who see you will have mercy on you and will feel sorry for you. It is not like they will not feel sorry for you, but they cannot (always) come to your aid. They are not capable of removing the affliction from you.

The key for “Husn al-Dhann bil-laah” is to believe that nothing in the heavens and the earth can prevent Allaah from carrying out His Will, as He تعالى said:

{But Allaah is not to be caused failure by anything in the heavens or on the earth}
📚 [Surah Faatir (35): 44]

This is what you should believe the foremost. Such things are not learned by simply reading books. Learn them directly from the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. The effect of this is directly taken from the Book of Allaah. There is nothing like the Words of Allaah that directly affects the hearts of the Believers.

{Or like the one who passed by a town and it had tumbled over its roofs. He said: "Oh! How will Allaah ever bring it to life after its death?" So Allaah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: "How long did you remain (dead)?" He (the man) said: "(Perhaps) I remained (dead) a day or part of a day". He said: "Nay, you have remained (dead) for a hundred years, look at your food and your drink, they show no change; and look at your donkey! And thus We have made of you a sign for the people. Look at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh". When this was clearly shown to him, he said, *"I KNOW (NOW) THAT ALLAAH IS ABLE TO DO ALL THINGS."*}
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 259]

This is the key to `Uboodiyyah (the worship of Allaah), that you know that Allaah has power over all things. If this belief is firmly planted in the heart, you will not find the need to ask anyone else, or to stand at their door, or feel the need to gain their sympathy. As Yaqoob عليه السلام said:

{I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allaah…”}
📚 [Surah Yusuf (12): 86]

If this thinking overcomes you, and your heart is filled with Yaqeen (certainty) that Allaah تعالى has power over all things, then whenever a calamity befalls you or whenever a thing feels impossible for you, you will be able to recall that Allaah تعالى is capable of removing the calamities, fulfilling your needs, bestowing His favors upon you, and that there is none to prevent Him.

{Say: "Who is he who can protect you from Allaah if He intends to harm you, or intends mercy on you?" And they will not find, besides Allaah, for themselves any Wali (protector, supporter, etc.) or any helper}
📚 [Surah al-Ahzaab (33): 17]

And the Prophet  said to Ibn `Abbaas
O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allaah and Allaah will protect you. Be mindful of Allaah and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allaah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allaah [alone]. AND KNOW THAT IF THE NATION WERE TO GATHER TOGETHER TO BENEFIT YOU WITH ANYTHING, THEY WOULD NOT BENEFIT YOU EXCEPT WITH WHAT ALLAAH HAD ALREADY PRESCRIBED FOR YOU. AND IF THEY WERE TO GATHER TOGETHER TO HARM YOU WITH ANYTHING, THEY WOULD NOT HARM YOU EXCEPT WITH WHAT ALLAAH HAD ALREADY PRESCRIBED AGAINST YOU. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.
