Tafseer - The Meaning of the word "Toobaa"

Allaah تعالى said:

{Those who believed, and work righteousness, Toobaa is for them and a beautiful place of (final) return.} [Surah al-Ra`d (13):29]

Imaam Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer:

`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbaas said that Toobaa means, “Happiness and comfort or refreshment of the eye.”

`Ikrimah said that Toobaa means, “How excellent is what they earned.”

While Ad-Dahhaak said, “A joy for them.”

Furthermore, Ibrahim An-Nakh`i said that Toobaa means, "Better for them.”

While Qataadah said that it is an Arabic word that means, “you have earned a good thing.”

In another narration, Qataadah said that “Toobaa for them” means, "It is excellent for them.”

{and a beautiful place of return.} and final destination.

These meanings for Toobaa are all synonymous and they do not contradict one another.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudree said that a man asked, "O Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم! Toobaa for those who saw you and believed in you!'' The Prophet said صلى الله عليه وسلم,

«طُوبَى لِمَنْ رَآنِي وَآمَنَ بِي، وَطُوبَى ثُمَّ طُوبَى ثُمَّ طُوبَى لِمَنْ آمَنَ بِي وَلَمْ يَرَنِي»

“Toobaa is for he who saw me and believed in me. Toobaa, and another Toobaa, and another Toobaa for he who believed in me, but did not see me.” A man asked, "What is Toobaa'' The Prophet said,

«شَجَرَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مَسِيرَتُهَا مِائَةُ عَامٍ ثِيَابُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ تَخْرُجُ مِنْ أَكْمَامِهَا»

“(Toobaa is) a tree in Paradise whose width is a hundred years, and the clothes of the people of Paradise are taken from its bark.” [Al-Albaanee in “al-Saheehah” (1985) said: “In this chain there is nothing wrong because of the supporting narration” and in “Saheeh al-Jaami`” (3918) he graded it as “Hasan”]

Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim recorded that Sahl bin Sa`d said that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said,
«إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ شَجَرَةً يَسِيرُ الرَّاكِبُ فِي ظِلِّهَا مِائَةَ عَامٍ لَا يَقْطَعُهَا»

“There is a tree in Paradise, if a rider travels in its shade for one hundred years, he would not be able to cross it.”

An-Nu`maan bin Abi `Ayyash Az-Zuraqi added, "Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri narrated to me that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

«إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ شَجَرَةً يَسِيرُ الرَّاكِبُ الْجَوَادَ الْمُضَمَّرَ السَّرِيعَ مِائَةَ عَامٍ مَا يَقْطَعُهَا»

“There is a tree in Paradise, if a rider travels in its shade on a fast, sleek horse for one hundred years, he would not be able to cross it.”

In his Saheeh, Imaam Muslim recorded that Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said that Allaah the Exalted and Most Honored said,

“O My slaves! If the first and the last among you, mankind and Jinns among you, stood in one spot and asked Me and I gave each person what he asked, it will not decrease from My dominion, except what the needle decreases (or carries) when entered into the sea.”

Khalid bin Ma`ddan said, "There is a tree in Paradise called Toobaa, that has breasts that nurse the children of the people of Paradise. Verily, the miscarriage of a woman will be swimming in one of the rivers of Paradise until the Day of Resurrection commences, when he will be gathered with people while forty years of age.'' Ibn Abi Hatim collected this statement.

Some more Ahaadeeth:

For killing the Khawaarij:

Narrated Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree and Anas ibn Maalik: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Soon there will appear disagreement and dissension in my people; there will be people who will be good in speech and bad in work. They recite the Qur’aan, but it does not pass their collar-bones. They will swerve from the religion as an arrow goes through the animal shot at. They will not return to it till the arrow comes back to its notch. They are worst of the people and animals. Toobaa (Happy) is the one who kills them and they kill him. They call to the Book of Allaah, but they have nothing to do with it. He who fights against them will be nearer to Allaah than them (the rest of the people).” The people asked: What is their sign? He replied: “They shave the head.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4765), and authenticated by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

For controlling the tongue:

Thowbaan, the freed slave of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, said: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said “Toobaa is for anyone who controls his tongue, whose house is sufficient for him (i.e. he is content with it) and who weeps over his errors" [Saheeh al-Targheeb (2740, 2855, 3332) and Shaikh al-Albaanee graded it as “Hasan li-ghairih”]

For seeking much forgiveness:

`Abdullaah bin Busr رضي الله عنه said: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Toobaa (a tree in Paradise or blessedness) is for him who finds in his scroll many prayers for forgiveness”. [Ibn Majah (3818) and authenticated by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

For embracing Islaam and being content with little:

Narrated Abu Muhammad Fadaalah ibn `Ubayd al-Ansaari: that he heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم say: “Toobaa (Happy news) for the person who embraces Islaam and has got means of subsistence sufficient for his needs and is contented.” [Tirmidhee (2349), and authenticated by Shaikh al-Albaanee, and authenticated by Shaikh Muqbil al-Waadi`ee in “al-Saheeh al-Musnad” (1064)]

For the strangers:

Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Islaam initiated as something strange, and it would revert to its (old position) of being strange, so good tidings for the strangers.” [Saheeh Muslim (145)]

For the doers of good:

Narrated Sahl ibn Sa'd: Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "This wealth consists of various kinds of treasures and those treasures have keys. Toobaa (blessedness) is for the man whom Allaah has made a key for good and a lock for evil, but woe to the man whom Allaah has made a key for evil and a lock for good." [Sunan Ibn Maajah (238) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
