The virtue of repeating the Adhaan behind the Muadhdhin

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Narrated Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree رضي الله عنه: Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ said: ❝When you hear the Adhaan, repeat what the Muadhdhin (the call-maker) says.❞

[Saheehain]

`Abdullaah bin `Amr bin al-`Aas رضي الله عنهما reported: I heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ saying: ❝When you hear the Adhaan, repeat what the Muadhdhin says. Then send Salah upon me (i.e. invoke blessings on me) because everyone who does so will receive in return ten blessings from Allaah. Then beseech Allaah to grant me al-Waseelah, which is a high rank in Jannah, fitting for only one of Allaah’s slaves; and I hope that I will be that man. Whoever asks that I be given al-Waseelah, he will be assured of my intercession.❞

There is good for a Believer in everything:

❝How wonderful is the case of a believer; for all his affairs are good for him, and this applies only to a believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him; if something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.❞

From the signs of a person’s understanding of the Deen

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Abu Wail reported: `Ammaar Ibn Yaaser رضي الله عنه delivered to us the Khutbah (Friday sermon). It was short and eloquent. When he (`Ammaar) descended (from the pulpit) we said to him: O `Aba al-Yaqdhaan, you have delivered a short and eloquent sermon. Would that you had lengthened (the sermon). He said: I have heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ as saying:
❝The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of the sermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for there is charm (in precise) expression.❞

When you feel low in Imaan, broken and dejected

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

In everyone’s life there comes a point when they feel low in Imaan, broken, dejected, worried, or sad. So what should a person do if he finds himself in such a situation? One such narration which helps in understanding what causes a person to have this feeling is the Hadeeth of Hanzhalah (حنظلة) رضي الله عنه. Through this Hadeeth, one learns the importance of having good companionship, approaching the scholars to seek clarification, attending the circles of knowledge, reciting more Qur’aan, doing more Adhkaar and seeking Allaah’s refuge and repenting to Him – all these help in boosting one’s Imaan and in keeping firm upon the Deen.

We all have that one friend:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Once in a while we come across a friend or a relative who with his continuous requests / asking / calling puts us in a spot where we cannot refuse and have to comply with their request.

We should be careful not to make abrupt requests which will cause discomfort, annoyance or embarrassment to the one being requested. Sometimes the requester will not be offended if his request is denied; but such abrupt requests tend to shift the weight of the responsibility / blame upon the one being requested, where they sometimes feel cornered into doing it.

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

❝And it is known that if someone were to give you a gift or gave you something out of modesty and bashfulness, then you should not accept it from him, because this is like he was impelled to do it. This is why the scholars’ رحمهم الله have said: it is forbidden for you to accept a gift from a person if you know that he is giving it to you only out of modesty or bashfulness.

Similarly, if you were to pass by a house and its owner invites you in, and you know that he did this out of modesty and bashfulness, then you should not enter it because this is like the one who did it out coercion. This is from the etiquette of attending the gathering, which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم legislated upon his Ummah that one should not make his brother get up from his place do that he can occupy it.❞

Removing the harm from the path

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

❝I saw a man going about in Jannah (and enjoying himself) as a reward for cutting from the middle of the road, a tree which was causing inconvenience to the Muslims.❞ [Saheeh Muslim (6341)]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

❝As for removing the harm from the path, then the path can be:

1) A path in real sense, i.e. the path which the people use for walking (or driving etc.)

2) A path in linguistic sense, i.e. the path to the hearts.

So working on removing the harm from both these paths is a means for attaining nearness to Allaah. Removing the harm from the path to the hearts (by clearing the doubts, showing the correct path, teaching them Tawheed and warning them against Shirk) and righteous deeds (i.e. by enjoining the good and forbidding the evil) is more rewarding and more important than removing the harm from the paths which the people tread. And Allaah is the One who grants success.❞

The Book of Etiquette of traveling (Part 2)

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Chapter: The desirability of undertaking a journey in a group and appointing a group leader for the journey.

958 - Narrated Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنه: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ❝Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.❞ [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2998)]

959 - Narrated `Abdullaah Ibn `Amr Ibn al-`Aas رضي الله عنهما: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ❝A single rider is a devil, and a pair of riders is a pair of devils, but three are a company of riders.❞ [Sunan Abu Dawood (2607) and Sunan al-Tirmidhee (1674) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

960 - Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree and Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنهما reported: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ❝When three persons set out on a journey, they should appoint one of them as their leader.❞ [Sunan Abu Dawood (2608, 2609) and graded as “Hasan-Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

961 - Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما reported: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ❝The best number of companions is four; the best number in expedition is four hundred; and the best number in armies is four thousand; and twelve thousand men will not be defeated as a result of smallness of numbers.❞ [Sunan Abu Dawood (2611) and Sunan al-Tirmidhee (1555) and graded as “Dha`eef” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. Note that the Shaikh had initially graded this Hadeeth as “Saheeh” but upon rechecking he graded it as Dha`eef. See al-Saheehah (2/680-685/968); Dha`eef al-Targheeb (1814)]

Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Saaleh al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

The author (Imaam al-Nawawee) رحمه الله said in his book Riyaadh al-Saaliheen, Chapter: Desirability of undertaking a journey in a group and appointing someone amongst themselves as a group leader. This chapter deals with two issues.

The first issue: One should travel with a group; otherwise he should not travel alone. This is why the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ❝Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night❞, meaning: a person should never travel alone (on a route). Perhaps he may fall sick, or he may faint, or someone may overpower him (and steal his belongings) or the likes and there would be no one to defend him, (or help him), or inform about him. This is regarding traveling (on routes) where one is completely alone; but as for the routes where there is constant traffic, and not a minute goes by except that there is a car passing you by – in such cases, even if you are alone in your own car, such rulings will not apply; i.e. he would not be considered as travelling alone because nowadays the routes are monitored from one province to another, from one city to another. So in such situations, he (the traveler) doesn’t come under this prohibition.

Moreover, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned in the other Hadeeth that the lone traveler is a devil; two travelers are two devils; but as for three, then they are a group of riders; meaning: when the person is traveling alone, he is a devil; when a person has only one companion to accompany him, then they both are devils; but when there are three people traveling together, they are riders and not devils. This Hadeeth is also a warning and discouragement from traveling alone or with only with one companion. But when there are three, there is no problem with that. And as mentioned earlier, this is again limited to routes and journeys where there is no one else coming and going.

Then the author mentioned the Hadeeth of Abu Sa`eed and Abu Hurairah that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had commanded the travelers, when they are traveling, to appoint one of them as a leader. Meaning: one of them is appointed as leader who is in charge of the group – deciding where to go, when to stop/rest, when to pray, when to eat and all that which is related with traveling. If they do not appoint a leader, there will be chaos and mismanagement. This is why it is said that people do not benefit when there is chaos and there is no one higher (in command to control them). Therefore, it is a must that a leader is chosen who manages their affairs.

It is apparent from this Hadeeth that when a leader is appointed then he should be obeyed in the matters related with traveling for a smooth journey because he is now their leader. But as for the matters which are not related with traveling, then obeying him in that is not necessary, especially when the matters are personal except when he considers him to be a leader from whom he can seek advice. As Allaah تبارك وتعالى said:

﴿فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ﴾

{…so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allah's) Forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. } [Surah aal-`Imraan (3): 159]

So, he can seek counseling for his benefit in the matters which are not clear for him. But if the matters are clear, then there is no need for him to consult the group leader. And success is only with Allaah.

Fulfilling an obligation is better than doing many optional deeds:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Many times we see people preoccupied with optional deeds while ignoring the obligatory ones, example:
1) Eager to feed the poor while ignoring the obligatory Salaah (prayers).
2) Being cheerful with their friends but not with their wives and children.
3) Being generous with old people while ignoring their own parents.
4) Eager to help the strangers but not their own brothers.
5) Standing up for the (optional) night prayers but missing on the Fajr with the congregation.

It is prohibited for men to wear pure red clothes

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Al-Baraa’ ibn `Aazib رضي الله عنه narrated: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was of a modest height. I saw him wearing a red Hullah* (mantle or cloak), and I did not see anything better than him.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3551, 5848) and Saheeh Muslim (5770)]

*Note: Hullah is a suit of two Yemeni garments which are woven with red and black stripes, or red and green stripes. It is described as red because of the apparent red stripes in it.

Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Saaleh al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

❝The most preferred choice of color, in clothes, is white but if a person wears some other color then there is nothing wrong with that - except for the red color because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibited the red color, i.e. if it is made entirely of red color. But if it is red and it contains white, then there is nothing wrong with that. This is what the author (Imaam al-Nawawee) mentioned (in his book, Riyaadh al-Saaliheen) that “the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was of a modest height and that he was wearing a red Hullah (mantle or cloak)…”

The red Hullah doesn’t mean that it was entirely made of red color, but it means that the most obvious color in it is red – like how one says: “the red Shimaagh” (the head scarf), whereas it is not entirely made up of red, but rather, it has a lot of white in it as well (i.e. it is woven or stitched with red and white threads); but it is still referred to as red because the points and the patterns are made with red (colored threads). Similarly, the red Hullah, meaning: the most obvious color in it is red. But as for men wearing clothes made purely in red, in which there is no white color, such clothes have been prohibited by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.❞

[Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (4/270-271)]

Note: The Ahaadeeth which forbid wearing plain red:

1. Al-Baraa’ ibn `Aazib رضي الله عنه said: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade us to use red Mayaathir (saddlecloths or mattresses) and Qasiy (garments with woven stripes of silk).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5838, 5863)]

2. Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: “I was forbidden (to wear) red garments and gold rings, and to recite the Qur’aan in Rukoo`.” [Sunan al-Nasaa’i, (5266) and Shaikh al-Albaanee said: “its Isnaad is Saheeh”]

3. Ibn Hajr reported in al-Fath al-Baaree that whenever `Umar رضي الله عنه saw someone wearing clothes dyed red with safflower, he would pull him side and say: “Leave this for the women.” [al-Fath al-Baaree (10/305)]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
