Two Types of Du`aa

The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
The supplication made between the Adhaan and the `Iqaamah is never rejected.
[Sunan Abu Dawood (521) and Sunan al-Tirmidhee (212, 3595) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

In explanation of the above Hadeeth, Shaikh Saaleh al-Fawzaan said:

Many people neglect to supplicate between the Adhaan and `Iqaamah. They preoccupy themselves with the recitation of the Qur’aan. No doubt that the recitation of the Qur’aan is a glorious act, but the recitation of the Qur’aan has its own time. That one utilizes this time in making Du’aa and Dhikr is better, because the confined Du`aa* in its proper time is better than making general Du`aa (at any other time). As for the recitation of the Qur’aan then it is general, (meaning) it can be recited at all times. But this time (between the Adhaan and `Iqaamah) should be allocated for making Du`aa. So, utilizing this time in making Du`aa, Dhikr and seeking forgiveness is better than reciting the Qur’aan. This is what one should be aware of.

Notes:
*Du`aa are of two types: General (مطلق) and Confined (مقيد).

The general Du`aa is not limited by time or place, and it can be said at any time.

But any Du`aa which is limited to a specific time or place is referred to as “Confined Du`aa”.

Example of time restraint: Du`aa said between the Adhaan and `Iqaamah, Du`aa said by a Fasting person or a traveler, Du`aa in the last third of the night, Du`aa on the Day of `Arafah.

Example of place restraint: Du`aa in Sujood, Du`aa in the final Tashahhud (before the Salaam), Du`aa between Rukn al-Yamaanee and al-Hajr al-Aswad while making Tawaaf around the Ka`bah.

Ruling on prolonging the final Sajdah of the Salaah

From the Fatwa of Shaikh `Abdul `Azeez Ibn Baaz

QUESTION: Some people prolong the last Sajdah (prostration) in the last Raka`ah (unit) of the prayer. They exclusively mark the last Sajdah for making Du`aa while leaving out the other Sujood. And sometimes it is the Imaam (of the Masjid) who does this, while we, the followers behind him, observe him prolonging only the last Sajdah. What is the ruling on this?

Shaikh Baaz رحمه الله: We do not know of any evidence in the Sharee`ah regarding prolonging (only) the last Sajdah (prostration) of the prayer. Rather, the Sunnah is that all the Sujood (prostrations) should be in accordance (i.e. without marking anyone of them as special), and he (the Imaam) should not lengthen it on the people (while in congregation). Indeed the prostrations of the one offering the Salaah should be moderate and consistent (with each other). This should also be applied to his Rukoo` (bowing) and his Qiyaam (standings) in the prayer.

Some of the names of Surah al-Faatihah:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

1. al-Faatihat-ul-Kitaab (الفاتحة الكتاب): meaning: the opening chapter of the Book and it is the first Surah of the Qur’aan.

2. Al-Sab` al-Mathaanee (السبع المثاني): meaning: the seven repeatedly recited Aayaat. [Surah al-Hijr (15): 87] As it is recited repeatedly in every Rak`ah (unit) of the Salaah.

3. Umm al-Quraan (أم القرآن) and Umm al-Kitaab (أم الكتاب): meaning: Mother of the Qur’aan and Mother of the Book. “Umm al-Shayy” (mother of a thing) means: The foundation or the origin of a thing to which it returns. [Example: the proverb in English: "Necessity is the mother of invention"]. The whole of the Qur’aan, in its meaning, returns to what is implied in this Surah.

4. Al-Salaah (الصلاة): meaning: the Prayer. As has been mentioned in the Hadeeth Qudsee that Allaah تعالى said: {I have divided the Salaah into two halves between Me and My slave} [Saheeh Muslim]. The Salaah hear meaning Surah al-Faatihah.

5. Al-Kaafiyah (الكافية): meaning: The sufficient.

6. Al-Ruqyah (الرقية): meaning: Incantation (treatment for poison and evil eye etc.). In the narration in which it is mentioned that the chief of a tribe was stung by a scorpion and the Companion treated him by reciting Surah al-Faatihah and took sheep as payment for doing the Ruqyah. When the Prophet was informed about it, he said: How did he come to know that it (Al-Faatihah) is Ruqyah (i.e. could be used for treatment)? [Saheehain]

Allaah gives guidance only to those who deserve it and are worthy of it

In the Qur'aan, Allaah تعالى says:

{When those who disbelieve had put in their hearts pride and haughtiness the pride and haughtiness of the time of ignorance, then Allaah sent down His Sakeenah (calmness and tranquillity) upon His Messenger () and upon the believers, and made them stick to the word of piety (i.e. لا إلهَ إلاّ الله none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah), and they were well entitled to it and worthy of it. And Allaah is the All-Knower of everything.} [Surah al-Fath (48): 26]

Don't be from the people who do NOT understand the message of the Qur’aan:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Shaikh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله in his Sharh (explanation) of Usool al-Sittah mentioned the following statement of Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله:

The Qur’aan, the whole of it is about Tawheed, because:
1. It either commands to worship Allaah alone and to abandon Shirk.
2. Or it informs us about the reward of the people of Tawheed and the punishment of the people of Shirk.
3. Or it informs us about the Halaal and Haraam in Islaam - and this is from the rights of Tawheed.
4. Or it informs us about the stories of the Prophets and their nations and what took place between them of the disobedience and negligence.

Then Shaikh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله says:
The whole of the Qur’aan is about Tawheed, from its beginning till its end. Yet there are people who recite this Qur’aan but commit Major Shirk. They say (with their tongues): لا إلهَ إلاّ الله (that none has the right to be worshiped except Allaah), but do not act on it (with their hearts and their limbs). They are in one valley while the Qur’aan and لا إلهَ إلاّ الله are in another valley. Rather, this is only a statement which they utter with their tongues (without understanding what it means or what it implies).

If you ask them: “What is the meaning of لا إلهَ إلاّ اللّهُ?”
They'll say: “I don't know. I did not learn about it.”
We say to him: So if you say لا إلهَ إلاّ اللّهُ and you do not know what it means, does this (characteristic) befit a Muslim?!

Do you say a statement which you do not understand and it does not bothers you?! Or do you say: I heard the people saying something, so I also said the same?! Like how the hypocrites will respond to the questions in the graves: I do not know, but I heard the people saying something and so I said (the same). [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (86, 184, 922, 1053, 1338, 1374, 7287) and Saheeh Muslim (1977)]

{And the example of those who disbelieve, is as that of him who shouts to the (flock of sheep) that hears nothing but calls and cries. (They are) deaf, dumb and blind. So they do not understand.} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 171]

Allaah تعالى likened them to the cattle which hears the sound of the shepherd and reacts to this sound but does not understand it.

Do not respect the Baatil opinions

Shaikh Saaleh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله said:
The statement of those who say: “Have respect for the views and the speech (of others)” - this statement of theirs is falsehood. Nothing is to be respected except the TRUTH. As for the falsehood, then it is never to be respected or honored. Rather, falsehood is to be refuted, and eliminated, and people are to be warned against it, otherwise, it will be the cause of destruction for the Ummah if everyone were upon error.

Shaikh al-Fawzaan: Natural Phenomenon or the Will of Allaah?!

In response to the question regarding the reasons for the earthquakes and if nature has any role in it, Shaikh Saaleh al-Fawzaan غفر الله له said:

There is no such thing as natural phenomenon [1], for these are from the statements of the atheists. Everything which happens is by Allaah’s Qadhaa and Qadar (Divine Will and Decree) and everything which takes place is by the Wisdom of Allaah جل وعلا. As for the earthquakes, Allaah تعالى decrees them so that He عز وجل can frighten His slaves [2] and to remind them to turn to their Lord in repentance. Indeed it is Allaah تعالى who {grasps the heavens and the earth lest they move away from their places} [3]. Allaah تعالى has grasped the heavens and the earth, and when He تعالى Wills, He shakes them to awakened His slaves and to warn them.

Do not be among those who recite the Qur’aan but curse themselves:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Shaikh Saaleh bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan غفر الله له said:

“As for the saying of Allaah تعالى:

{…not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.} [Surah al-Faatihah (1): 7]

{those who earned Your Anger}, they are the scholars, those who do not act upon the knowledge that they have.

{nor of those who went astray}, they are those who do actions without knowledge.

What is common between a Munaafiq, a Faasiq and a Hizbee?!

Shaikh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله said:

“No one engages in defaming the scholars, who are firm upon the truth, except for one of the three:

1) A Munaafiq (hypocrite) whose hypocrisy is well known.

2) Or a Faasiq (evil doer) who hates the scholars because they prevent him from doing evil deeds.

3) Or a misguided Hizbee (fanatic/zealot) who hates the scholars because they do not agree with his Hizbiyyah (partisanship) and his deviant ideology.”

Advice during the times of Fitan:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Shaikh Saaleh al-Fawzaan

Question: What do you advise us to do in this age in which the Fitan (trials and afflictions) have increased and the innovators have spread out and the death of the scholars?

Answer: The first thing I advise you is the Taqwa of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى, and do much supplication that Allaah تعالى keeps us and you firm upon the Deen and that He تعالى protects us and you from the evils of these Fitan.

Thereafter, I advise you to seek knowledge - seeking knowledge from the people of knowledge (the scholars) and being diligent towards seeking it. Verily, there is no protection from the Fitan except through correct knowledge, by the Will of Allaah. So, if you do not have correct knowledge, perhaps you may fall in the Fitan while you are unaware and you do not know that it is a trial. So upon you is seeking knowledge from the people of knowledge. Do not be lazy in seeking knowledge when you have the chance (and the means) of seeking it.

The Shayaateen are locked up, but not their soldiers:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

QUESTION:

What is your advice to the Muslims as the month of Ramadhaan has come closer?

Shaikh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله answered:

“It is Waajib (obligatory) for a Muslim to ask Allaah that He تعالى makes him reach (the month of) Ramadhaan, and that He تعالى helps him in fasting, and establishing the night prayers, and in doing (extra) good deeds during (this month), because this is an opportunity in a lifetime of a Muslim.

“Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadhaan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allaah’s rewards then all his past sins will be forgiven.”

“Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadhaan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allaah’s rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be forgiven.”

This is an opportunity in the lifetime of a Muslim; perhaps he may not get this (opportunity) again.

The Muslim should be happy when the month of Ramadhaan approaches and should rejoice at it, and he should welcome it with joy and delight, and he should spend it in obedience to Allaah. Its nights (should be spent) standing in prayers, its days in fasting, and reciting the Qur’aan and doing Dhikr (Allaah’s remembrance) – this is a profitable (time) for a Muslim (to reap great benefits).

But as for those who, when Ramadhaan approaches, air corrupt and immoral TV programs, soap operas, useless talk shows (including those based on lies, falsehood, and superstitions), and game shows to keep the Muslims preoccupied (and to divert them from the obedience of Allaah), they (who participate in airing and making these shows) are all Shaitaan’s troops. Shaitaan recruited them for this.

So, upon a Muslim is to beware of all these (programs and people), and to warn against them. Ramadhaan is not a time for engaging in amusement and play and watching TV series and game shows, and wasting time.”

Shaikh Saleh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله: The one who denies al-Ijmaa` is a Kaafir.

Question: Your Excellency! Some of the scholars say: “Al-Ijmaa` (consensus of the scholars) is not a proof, it is just a way of consultation as there is no consensus at all except to look for the evidence in the Text (i.e. the Book and the Sunna). Moreover, the claim – in many issues – that there is a consensus regarding them is a matter of doubt.” What do you have to say about this?

Shaikh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله answers: Absolute denial of al-Ijmaa` tantamount to Kufr and apostasy from Islaam. Absolute denial of al-Ijmaa` - that the person says that there is no consensus at all – then he is a Kaafir. As for the one who denies some aspects of al-Ijmaa`, then this is debatable, and his words should be analyzed; is he correct or is he incorrect?

This is because there are issues where it is claimed that there is Ijmaa` regarding them, but (in reality) no consensus is reached in these regards. But as for the one who absolutely denies the consensus and says that they are not proof, then he is a Kaafir. He is a Kaafir in Allaah عز وجل, because al-Ijmaa` is there, and all praise be to Allaah. The scholars have consensus regarding `Aqeedah (Creed), they have consensus regarding Tawheed of Allaah عز وجل, and they have consensus regarding the prohibition of Ribaa (Usury and interest), and they have consensus regarding the impermissibility of Zinaa (adultery and fornication), and they have consensus regarding the issues of Deen which are known due to necessity. The one who absolutely rejects the consensus is a Kaafir. As for the one who rejects some aspects of it, then there might be a reason, so he is to be looked at and examined.

Shaikh al-Fawzaan on the means of attaining firmness upon the Deen:

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan حفظه الله was asked: We ask your Excellency to mention to us the means of attaining firmness upon the Deen while there is frequent relapsing in this age?

The Shaikh حفظه الله replied: The means are many, and the major among them are: Taqwaa of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى (God-consciousness), fearing Allaah تعالى, similarly, asking the people of knowledge when you are confused (or doubtful about a matter), accompanying the righteous, remembering Allaah much and reciting the Qur’aan more, strictly guarding the prayer (and offering it) with the Jamaa`ah (congregation). All of these are from the means of attaining firmness upon the Deen.

Ruling regarding reading or writing fictional stories

Question: What is the ruling regarding reading or writing fictional stories and those which arouse the imagination? And if some of them [aid in] rectify[ing] social problems, then is this permissible?

Response: Fictional stories are from lies which occupy the time of the writer and the reader without benefit, so abandoning busying oneself with them is preferable. And if writing and reading [fictional stories] occupies oneself from that which is obligatory then this [fictional stories] is prohibited. And if it occupies oneself from that which is recommended then this [fictional stories] is disliked. In any case, the time of the Muslim is valuable, so it is not permissible to spend it in that which there is no benefit.

Removing the Doubts: The Impermissibility of calling Allaah by the names of other “gods”

Referring to Allaah by the names of pagan and other “gods” like the Hindu “gods”: “Brahma” (Creator), “Vishnu” (Sustainer) or the Christian “god”: “Abb” (the loving Father) or as the pagan “god”:  “Thor” (the “god” of thunder) is not correct; and accordingly naming people as `Abdul-Brahma, `Abdul-Vishnu or `Abdul-Abb is not correct.

The names Brahma, Vishnu etc. are proper nouns, which have already been assigned to the pagan "gods".

Allowing the people to refer Allaah as “Brahma” only because “Brahma” means al-Khaaliq (the Creator) or “Vishnu” because it means al-Rabb (the Sustainer) is not a justified reasoning. Rather this type of reasoning is a gateway to other evils as it does not stop here. According to this “reasoning”, it becomes justifiable to refer Allaah as “Lakshmi” (the Hindu “goddess” of wealth and prosperity) because from the Names and Attributes of Allaah is “Al-Ghaniyy” (the All-Sufficient) and “Al-Mughni” (the One who enriches). And Allaah’s help is sought from this evil. And free is Allaah of what they attribute to Him.

It is a grave injustice when a person speaks about Allaah without knowledge, and attributes to Him سبحانه وتعال without any textual authority.

Removing the Doubts: Doubting the Kufr of a Kaafir?

Introduction:

In the wake of recent events, the need was felt to clarify in brief some of the errors that some people have fallen into in regard to the correct `Aqeedah (Creed). It is being witnessed that whenever a famous personality from the Kuffaar dies, a large number of the Muslims are seen updating the status on their social networks to “RIP” (rest in peace) so-and-so. Others would be seen praising the kuffaar over and above the Muslims. Furthermore, some would be seen arguing that they were “righteous” and upon the “truth” and thus deserve good treatment or Paradise in the Hereafter.

Importance of asking Allaah for steadfastness in religion
