Errors in the movie: "The Message"

It’s been 40+ years since the movie: “The Message” was released. Even though the senior scholars from Saudi Arabia and some scholars from Azhar (Egypt) in the past spoke against its release, yet it has remained widely in circulation in the Muslim world. For many, this movie is and was the only source of learning the Seerah (the biography) of the Prophet ﷺ. Many things in this movie have been portrayed which are factually untrue, or based on Weak and fabricated narrations, or exaggerated to say the least.

This movie is again making a comeback due to recent praise by some “famous personality”, saying that this is the best movie according to him even if it is not 100% Halaal.

Three Weak Ahaadeeth regarding Surah al-Waaqi`ah

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

🚩1. From Ibn Mas`ood that the Prophet ﷺ is supposed to have said:

❝Whoever recites Surah al-Waaqi`ah every night would never encounter poverty.❞

📚 [Graded as “Dha`eef” (Weak) by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Dha`eefah (289). Others who graded this as Weak are al-Dhahabee, Imaam Ahmad, Ibn al-Jawzee, Abu Haatim, al-Daraqutnee, al-Manawee]

🚩2. From Ibn `Abbaas that the Prophet ﷺ is supposed to have said:

❝Whoever recites Surah al-Waaqi`ah every night would never encounter poverty; and whoever recites Surah al-Qiyaamah every night will meet Allaah (on the Day of Judgment) while his face will be (shining) like the moon when it is full.❞

📚 [Graded as “Mawdhoo`” (Fabricated) by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Dha`eefah (290). Al-Suyootee said, Ahmad al-Yamaamee (in of its narrators) is a liar]

🚩3. From Anas that the Prophet ﷺ is supposed to have said:

❝Whoever recites Surah al-Waaqi`ah and teaches it, will never be recorded among the negligent, and neither he nor his family will suffer poverty.❞

📚 [Graded as “Mawdhoo`” (Fabricated) by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Dha`eefah (291). Al-Suyootee said, `Abdul-Quddoos (in of its narrators) is abandoned, and Ibn al-Mubaarak said that he was a liar]

Weakness of the Hadeeth: to say "Baarak Allahu feek" when a child sneezes

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Before proceeding, please note that this post is only to discuss the weakness of the Hadeeth and nothing further. Please do not assume that this post is against Shaikh Saaleh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله.

It is being circulated that Shaykh Saalih al Fawzaan (May Allaah protect him and elevate his status) said:

❝As for the young (child), if he sneezes, it is not said to him: “May Allaah have mercy on you” (Yarhamuka-llaah) rather the person supplicates for him with blessings. Therefore it is said (to the child): “Baarak Allaahu Feek” (May Allaah bless you) because a young child sneezed in the company of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and he said: "Baarak Allaahu Feek".

And he (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) commanded the young child to praise Allaah whenever he sneezes from the viewpoint of teaching.❞

Scrutinize before narrating

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

It is reported on the authority of Yazeed bin Mujaalid al-Mu`abbarah: I heard Yahya bin Ma`een رحمه الله saying:

❝When you write, gather (everything); and when you narrate, scrutinize (verify it before narrating).❞

Weakness of the Hadeeth: the famous Nasheed: "Tala`al Badru `alayna…"

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Shaikh Naaserud-Deen al-Albaanee رحمه الله mentioned in al-Dha`eefah:

598 – ❝When he (The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to Madeenah, the Women and children began to sing:

Tala`al Badru `Alaynaa (The full moon rose over us)

Min Thaneeyaatil Wadaa` (From the valley of Wadaa` (one of the entrances into Madeenah))

Wajaba-sh Shukru `Alaynaa (Giving thanks is mandatory upon us)

Maa Da`aa Lillaahi Daa` (As long as there is a caller calling to Allaah).❞

Ruling: “Dha`eef”

Weakness of the Hadeeth: Paradise will mock at those who used to mock at others in this world

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

It is reported on the authority of al-Hasan (al-Basree) that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “A gate of paradise will open to one of those who used to mock people and a cry will be heard: ‘Come here, come here,’ and he will come forward in concern and anxiety, but when he reaches it, it will close in front of him. And this will happen again and again, until the gate will open and the cry ‘Come here, come here,’ will be heard as before, but he will not approach because he knows it will only close in front of him.” [Ibn Abi al-Dunya in al-Samt (285) and Dham al-Gheebah (149) and al-Baihaqee in Shu`ab al-Imaan (6333)]

Both, Ibn Abi al-Dunya and al-Baihaqee, reported this narration from their respective chains on the authority of Rauh bin `Ubaadah from Mubaarak bin Fudhaalah from al-Hasan from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Weakness of the Hadeeth: Sleeping after `Asr

 بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Shaikh al-Albaanee رحمه الله mentioned in al-Dha`eefah (39):

On the authority of `Aaishah رضي الله عنها, that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever sleeps after `Asr and loses his mind, then let him blame no one but himself.”

Shaikh al-Albaanee graded this Hadeeth as “Da`eef” (Weak).

Ibn Hibbaan mentioned this narration in his book: “al-Dhu`afaa’ wal-Majrooheen” (1/283) (the book of weak narrations).

Ibn al-Jawzee mentioned it in his book: “al-Maudhoo`aat” (3/69) (the book of weak and fabricated narrations) and said: “it is not authentic”.

  

Shaikh al-Albaanee رحمه الله said:

Marwaan [ibn Muhammad al-Asadi] said: “I said to Layth ibn Sa`d – when I saw him sleep after `Asr during the month of Ramadhaan: “O Abu al-Haarith! Why are you sleeping after `Asr when Ibn Lahee`ah has told us … (and he mentioned this narration)?” Al-Layth said: ❝I do not give up something that is good for me because of the Hadeeth of Ibn Lahee`ah from `Aqeel!❞”

I (al-Albaanee) say: ❝I am very much impressed by this answer of al-Layth, because it is indicative of his understanding and his knowledge (about the Deen), and no wonder, for he was one of the Imaams of the Muslims and amongst the well-known Fuqahaa’. I know that many of the Shaikhs today do not sleep after `Asr, even if they are in a need to do that. If it is said to them that the Hadeeth concerning that is Da`eef, they will immediately respond by saying: “Weak Ahaadeeth should be followed with regard to virtuous actions”.

Look at the difference between the understanding of the Salaf (earlier generations) and the knowledge of the Khalaf (later generations).❞

Weakness of the Hadeeth: rewards are multiplied 700 times in Dhul-Hijjah

[Note: there are many authentic Ahaadeeth on the virtues of the first 10 Days of Dhul-Hijjah, but the two quoted below are weak with these wordings.]

Hadeeth 1:

From the route of Mas`ood Ibn Waasil on the authority of Nahhaas bin Qahm on the authority of Qataadah on the authority of Sa`eed bin al-Musayyib on the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

[First part of the Hadeeth] “There are no days more loved to Allaah for you to worship Him therein than the ten days of Dhul Hijjah.” [Second part] “Fasting any day during it is equivalent to fasting one year and to offer salatul tahajjud (late-night prayer) during one of its nights is like performing the late night prayer on the night of power. [i.e., Lailatul Qadr].”

[Related by at-Tirmidhee in his Sunan (758), Ibn Maajah in his Sunan (1728), and al-Baihaqi in Shu`ab al-Imaan (3480)]

Hadeeth 2:

Weakness of the Hadeeth: "My Ummah has been given 5 things in Ramadhaan"

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم is supposed to have said:

“My Ummah were given five things for Ramadhaan which were not given to anyone before them. For them:

1. The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allaah than the fragrant smell of musk.

2. The Angels (in another narration it is: “The fish”) seek forgiveness for the fasting people until they break their fast.

3. Allaah prepares and decorates a special garden in Jannah everyday and then says (to it): {The time is near when faithful servants shall cast aside the great trials of the world and come to you.}

4. In this month (for them) evil-minded Shaytaan is chained so as not to reach unto those evils to which they normally reach during other months besides Ramadhaan.

5. On the last night of Ramadhaan they are forgiven.”

The Sahaabah رضي الله عنهما thereupon enquired: “O Messenger of Allaah! Is that last night Laylatul Qadr? The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: “No. But it is only right that a servant should be given his reward on having completed his service.”

[Musnad Ahmad (7917), Musnad al-Bazzaar (8571) and al-Baihaqee in Shu`ab al-Imaan ()]

Ruling on the Hadeeth: “Very weak”

1. Shaikh al-Albaanee in Dha`eef al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb (586) said: “It is “Dha`eef Jiddan” (very weak).”

2. Shu`aib al-Arna’oot in his checking of Musnad Ahmad said: “It is “Dha`eef Jiddan” (very weak). Regarding Hishaam bin Abu Hishaam (one of its narrators), then there is consensus about him being weak. And Muhammad bin Muhammad bin al-Aswad (another narrator) is “Majhool al-Haal” (his status is unknown) and no one reported from him except this Hishaam and `Abdullaah bin `Aun.”

3. Shaikh Ahmad Shaakir said in his checking of Musnad Ahmad: “Its chain is “Dha`eef” (weak).”

4. Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalaanee said in al-Mataaalib al-`Aaliyah (1009): “Its chain is “Dha`eef” (weak).”

Weakness of the Hadeeth: The Prophet taking an oath by saying: "By his father!"

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said regarding the statement of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم:

أَفْلَحَ وَأَبِيهِ إِنْ صَدَقَ

“By his father, he shall succeed if he were true (to what he professed).” [Saheeh Muslim (11b)] ^{[1] [2] [3]}

Please Verify!

Assalaam `alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

This is for the brothers and sisters who have the means to refer to the `Arabic text of the Ahaadeeth.

Always verify the translation with the actual `Arabic text, as due to human nature, errors are bound to enter the translation.

For example, the English translation of the Hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim that hell will be brought having “seventy thousand bridles”; in two websites it is only translated as “seventy bridles”. The word “thousand” was overlooked due to human error.

Moreover, it seems that this Hadeeth was copied from the same source. This is evident because both the websites also wrongly attribute this Hadeeth to Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه while the original `Arabic text mentions the name of `Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه.

The purpose of this message is only to remind the brothers and sisters - those who have the means - to verify before posting.

Baarak Allaahu feekum.

wa sal-Allaahu wa sallim wa baarik `alaa Nabiyinaa Muhammad.

Weakness of the Hadeeth: Fasting `Aashoorah is like worshiping for 2 years

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

There's a text going around saying:

In `Arabic it is:

من صام آلتاسع والعاشر من محرم كمن تعبد عامين ومن أبلغ الناس بها كمن تعبد ثمانين عامآ

And in English it is being circulated as:

“Whoever fasts on the 9th & 10th of Muharram (which is the 22nd & 23rd of November), it's as if they had done ibadah for 2 years & whoever makes someone else aware of this, it's as if they have done ibadah for 80 years. So forward this Insha Allah.”

Narrations like these are the precise reason why the note: “Reference Please” was written. As it is seen, the above narration is without a reference and nor can its origin be traced out as a Hadeeth of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم or the narration of the Salaf, and none of the Books of Hadeeth mention this. So, this is nothing but a Fabrication and a LIE. May Allaah forgive us for interpolating in His religion.

And sufficient for us is this authentic Hadeeth:

On the authority of Abu Qataadah رضي الله عنه: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم was asked about fasting on the Day of `Aashooraa. So he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “it expiates (the sins from) the previous year.” [Muslim (1162)]

Weakness of the Hadeeth: The Ink of the Scholar is Holier than the Blood of the Martyr

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

»مداد حبر العالم أقدس من دم الشهيد«

“The ink of the scholar is holier the blood of the martyr.” [Baseless]

These Ahaadeeth – about the virtues of the scholars over that of a martyrs or the virtues of the ink of the scholars over that of the blood of the martyrs – has been narrated on the authority of a number of Sahaabah with different wordings, but all with the chains which are baseless, unfounded, very weak or fabricated.

Reference Please

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

So we see that just for the sake of sharing and keeping their pages & blogs buzzing & twittering, some people are posting anything and everything which THEY judge it to be authentic or correct. The real problem begins with the fact that a lot of them do not even post the reference.

A brother posts on his wall:

Quote: “…”

Scholar: XYZ

OK, we get it, that such-and-such scholar said such-and-such, but the name of the scholar is not a reference akhi/ukhti. The reference has to be a book (or if he is a contemporary scholar, than an audio or a video if there is one).

How in the world did you ever come to know what `Alee ibn Abee Taalib or Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said or what Ibn Taymiyyah or Ibn al-Qayyim or Sufyaan al-Thawree said, whereas they died centuries ago?! You did not meet them nor did you hear from them. Akhi/ukhti, between you and them are the books.

And when you ask them for the reference, they will not be able to provide you one because regrettably they blindly did the “ctrl+c” & “ctrl+v” (copy paste) from someone else.

So you see, we need the reference to identify the authenticity, as well as to know that the Imaams are not being quoted out of context and that we are not attributing a lie on them by quoting that which they never said.

And Allaah’s help is sought from such foolishness.

Weakness of the Hadeeth: Virtues of Surah al-Hashr (59)

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Fatwa of Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله:

Question: Assalaam `alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. I ask you about this Hadeeth if it is Saheeh or Dha`eef: on the authority of Ma`qil bin Yasaar on the authority of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that he said: “If anyone says on entering the morning: ‘I seek refuge in Allaah the all-Hearing the All-knowing from the accursed devil’, three times and recites the last three verses of Surah al-Hashr (59) then Allaah deputes over him seventy thousand angels who pray for his forgiveness till the evening. And if he dies during the day, he dies as a martyr. And, if anyone recites it in the evening then (too) he is of the same station.” What is the authenticity of this Hadeeth?

Weakness of the Hadeeth: The Lesser Jihaad

Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth al-Dha`eefah of Shaikh al-Albaanee:

2460 - “We are returning from a minor Jihaad (and heading) to a major Jihaad.” [It was asked: What is major Jihaad? He replied: “Jihaad against the heart (i.e. base self).”]

Weakness of the Hadeeth: Rewards Are Multiplied 70 Times In Ramadhaan

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah said in his Saheeh:

Chapter: Virtues of the month of Ramadhaan – (only) if the Hadeeth is authentic

`Alee bin Hijr al-Sa`dee narrated to us that Yousuf bin Ziyaad narrated to him that Hammaam bin Yahyaa narrated on the authority of `Alee bin Zaid bin Jad`aan on the authority of Sa`eed bin al-Musayyib on the authority of Salmaan (al-Faarisee) that he said: 

The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم addressed us (i.e. the companions) on the last day of Sha`baan, saying, “Oh people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month; a month in which is a night better than a thousand months; a month in which Allaah has made it compulsory upon you to fast (by day), and voluntary to pray by night. Whoever draws nearer (to Allaah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Paradise. It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all”. They said: “Not all of us can find that which (we can provide to) the fasting person to break his fast.” He said: “Allaah تعالى gives this reward to anyone who helps the fasting person in breaking the fast even by a (single) date or provides him with water to drink or gives him milk. And it is a month the beginning of which is Mercy, its middle is Forgiveness, and its last is emancipation from the Fire.  Whoever reduces (the burden) on his slave, Allaah will forgive him and will emancipate him from the Fire. And increase in it the four things: Your Lord is pleased with two things, and with the (other) two He will enrich you. The two things with which your Lord is pleased are bearing witness that Laa ilaaha illallaah (there is no one worthy of being worshipped except Allaah) and that you seek His forgiveness. And the two things with which he will enrich you are when you ask for Paradise from Allaah and that you seek His refuge from the Hell. And whoever feeds a fasting person till he is satisfied, Allaah will give him the drink from my Cistern, the drink after which he will not feel thirsty till he enters the Paradise.”  [Saheeh Ibn Khuzaimah (1887)]

The Importance Of Quoting Only The Authentic Ahaadeeth...

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Nowadays a lot of people quote/post things and then attribute it to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. They do not verify its authenticity nor do they quote the references. Moreover, they do not even mention the name of the companion who narrated that Hadeeth. Before quoting any Hadeeth, its authenticity should be verified, because people in the past have concocted/fabricated many narrations of their own and then attributed it to Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم for various reasons. The following Ahadeeth convey to us the gravity of the sin for quoting a Hadeeth before verifying its authenticity.
