Brief Comments on Riyaadh al-Saaliheen #99

How the Love of Dunya will ruin the Aakhirah

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

﴿أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ * حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ﴾

{The competition for piling up of worldly things diverts you * Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die).} [Surah al-Takaathur (102): 1-2]

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: By Allaah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that this world will be opened up with its wealth for you as it was opened to those before you; and you vie with one another over it as they did and eventually it will ruin you as it ruined them.
[Saheeh Muslim]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

This is why we say: Whenever the doors of richness are opened for the people and they stare at it (and yearn for it), they will be losing their share of the Aakhirah to the level of their gain of the Dunya.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: By Allaah, it is not poverty that I fear for you…, meaning: I do not fear poverty for you, for (soon) the Dunya will be opened for you.

…but I fear that this world will be opened up with its wealth for you as it was opened to those before you; and you vie with one another over it as they did and eventually it will ruin you as it ruined them.

Indeed the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had spoken the truth. This is what has destroyed the people today. What has destroyed the people today is the mutual rivalry in amassing more and more wealth and worldly things, as if they (the people) were created for it instead of it being created for them. So they busy themselves with things that were created for them instead of busying themselves for which they were created (i.e. worship of Allaah). This indeed leads to the deterioration and relapsing (of humanity) - we ask Allaah for His protection.

[Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen (2/37-38)]
