Brief Comments on Riyaadh al-Saaliheen #116

Preparing for the last ten nights of Ramadhaan

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Chapter: Being generous and diligent in doing what has been enjoined, and increasing in doing more good deeds in the Month of Ramadhaan, and especially more in the last ten days of Ramadhaan.

1222 - Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنه said: The Prophet was the most generous of the people, and he used to be the most generous during the month of Ramadhaan when Jibreel visited him, and Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadhaan till the end of the month. The Prophet used to recite the Qur’aan to Jibreel, and when Jibreel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast (rain-bearing) wind (which causes welfare).

1223 - `Aaishah رضي الله عنها narrated: When the last ten days of Ramadhaan began, the Prophet used to stay up at night, tighten his waist- wrap, and wake up his family (to pray).

Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Saaleh al-`Uthaymeen رخمه الله said:

The author (Imaam al-Nawawee) رحمه الله said: Chapter: Being more generous in the month of Ramadhaan.

The Arabic word “al-Jood” means: being generous in spending from the wealth which one loves, or from the thing (which one loves to do). A person may spend generously from his wealth by giving it to the poor, or by giving gifts to those who are well-off, or supporting the needy. And he can be generous through his action, by helping someone in his affairs (by giving him a ride) in his car to go to a store or to reach his home. So being generous can be both ways, either by spending wealth or through one’s actions; rather, it may also include using one’s status (or position) in interceding for someone or mediating to bring about some benefit or repel some harm from someone, or the like.

As was reported in one of the narrations from Anas Ibn Maalik رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allaah was the most generous of all the people, when it came to spending wealth, and his body (for doing physical work), and his knowledge (in spreading the Truth), and in his call (towards Allaah), and in giving advice, and in everything that was beneficial for the creation. He was even more generous during Ramadhaan, because Ramadhaan is the month of generosity; Allaah spends generously on His slaves in this month, and his prosperous slaves spend generously on their brothers. Allaah تعالى is Jawwaad (Generous) and loves generosity. And Jibreel عليه السلام used to visit the Messenger of Allaah every night in the month of Ramadhaan to revise the Qur’aan so that it stays firm in his heart, and that both of them would receive the reward of revising the Qur’aan.

Jibreel عليه السلام used to descend but in a form which we don’t know because he was one of the Angels, and no one could see the Angels except when Allaah تعالى Wills. And whenever the Messenger of Allaah met Jibreel to recite the Qur’aan, he used to be more generous than a fast (rain-bearing) wind (which causes welfare; meaning: he would race to be the foremost in doing good deeds, and in his generosity he would outpace a fast wind, i.e. the wind which Allaah تعالى had sent which is fast like a hurricane, and yet the Prophet would be faster than it in doing good in Ramadhaan.

Thereafter, the author mentioned the Hadeeth of `Aaishah رضي الله عنها that when the last ten days of Ramadhaan began, the Prophet used to stay up at night, meaning: he would spend it making Dhikr (Allaah’s remembrance), reciting the Qur’aan, offering the prayers, and doing other acts of worship. He would also wake up his family and tighten his waist- wrap, meaning: he would wake up his family so that they too would pray. And he would tighten his waist-wrap, meaning: he would be in fully prepared to work (in Allaah’s obedience); because tightening the waist-wrap (in the language) means that a person prepares himself and gets ready (to carry out the task). And it is also said that tightening the waist-wrap also meant: that he would stay away from his wives so that he could free up his time for worship. And both these meanings are correct.

The Messenger of Allaah would free himself so that he could (devote his time for Allaah’s) worship in the last ten days of Ramadhaan, and he would spend the whole nights in Allaah’s obedience. Even though this is being generous by using one’s self (physically), yet it is being generous in fulfilling the rights of Allaah عز وجل. It is Allaah who bestows His favors upon whomever He تعالى Wills from His slaves. If He تعالى bestows his favors upon you to do good deeds, then all praise is for Him (alone). He first bestows His favor upon you to do righteous deeds; thereafter He bestows His favor upon you by accepting it.

May Allaah guide us and grant us success.

[Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen (5/275-277) of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen]
