Explanation of the Duaa for anxiety and sorrow - Hadeeth #3

Hadeeth 3(A):
Narrated Abu Bakrah Nafee` bin al-Haarith رضي الله عنه: The Prophet said: The supplication of the one in distress is:

اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو، فَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ، وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allaahumma raḥmataka arjoo, falaa takilnee ilaa nafsee tarfata `ain, wa asliḥlee sha’nee kullahu, laa ilaaha illaa Anta.

O Allaah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for a blink of an eye and rectify for me all of my affairs. None has the right to be worshipped except You.

📚 [This is part of the Hadeeth reported in Sunan Abu Dawood (5090) and Adab al-Mufrad (701) of Imaam al-Bukhaaree. And graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Explanation of the Duaa for anxiety and sorrow - Hadeeth #2

The Prophet used to invoke Allaah at the time of distress, saying:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ، وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

Laa ilaaha illal-laahu al-`Adheem, al-Haleem, Laa ilaaha illal-laahu Rabbu al-`arsh al-`Adheem, Laa ilaaha illal-laahu Rabbu-s-samaawaati wa Rabbul-ardi wa Rabbu-l-arsh il-kareem.

None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, the Majestic, the Most-Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, Lord of the Heavens, Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Noble Throne.

📚 [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (6345, 6346, 7426, 7431) and Saheeh Muslim (4915)]

🌴🌴🌴

📑 Terminologies:

Laa ilaaha illallaah: meaning: There is no one worthy of being worshiped but Allaah; i.e. only Allaah deserves worship.

Explanation of the Duaa for anxiety and sorrow - Hadeeth #1

`Aaishah رضي الله عنها said that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to gather his family members and used to say: If anyone is afflicted by sorrow or distress, then let them say:

اللَّهُ، اللَّهُ رَبِّي لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا

Allaahu, Allaahu Rabbee, laa ushriku bi Rabbee shai’aa.

Allaah, Allaah is my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him.

📚 [Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan (2369) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. See al-Saheehah (2755). It was also reported in Sunan Abu Dawood (1525) on the authority of Asmaa’ bint `Umais, and also graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

🌴🌴🌴

📑 Explanation:

The Prophet used to nurture his Companions upon Taqwa (God-consciousness), and taught them to turn towards Allaah for help and seek His protection in every matter. He used to teach them Du`aa (supplications) and Adhkaar (remembrance) that was beneficial for them.

In this Hadeeth, the Prophet said: If anyone is afflicted by sorrow or distress, meaning: that which is causing him distress, hardship, and tightness within himself because of an affliction that has befallen him; then let them say: Allaah, Allaah, the Prophet repeated the Lafdh al-Jalaalah (The Grand Name: “Allaah”), finding solace and happiness by remembering His Name, beseeching Him through His Majesty and Greatness, reaffirming His Tawheed (i.e. singling Him out in Worship). Indeed, the Lafdh al-Jalaalah, “Allaah”, is a Comprehensive Name, inclusive of all His Lofty, Aesthetic, and Perfect Names and Attributes.

His saying: is my Lord, meaning: He is my Lord who has done good towards me by causing me to exist from non-existence, and who guided me towards His worship (Tawheed) and remembrance, and who provided for me by bestowing upon me from His bounties, and the One who is the true Owner of all my affairs.

He then expressed Tawheed more clearly by saying: I do not associate anything with Him., meaning: He alone deserves worship. He has no partner that shares with Him in His Perfection, or Loftiness, or Aestheticism, or Worship. No one can withhold what He تعالى gives; and no one can give what He تعالى withholds, for He alone has power over all things.

By acknowledging this, it removes the worry, the distress, the sorrow, the hardship, and the tightness in the chest – only if it is said out of sincerity.

Definition: al-Hamm, al-Hazn, al-Ghamm

💠 Definition of: al-Hamm (الهم), al-Hazn (الحزن), al-Ghamm (الغم)

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

❝There are three passive feelings which affect the heart:

1) If it is related to the past, then it causes al-Hazn (sorrow/distress).

2) If it is related to the future, then it causes al-Hamm (anxiety/worry).

3) If it is related to the present, then it causes al-Ghamm (grief).❞

📚 [al-Fawaaid (1/26)]

🌴🌴🌴

📑 Note:

1) al-Hazn is related to the loss in the past, either the passing away of someone, or losing something, or recalling the time spent with the loved ones. Like how Yaqoob عليه السلام felt at the loss of his most beloved son, Yusuf عليه السلام, when he said:

إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّـهِ

{I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allaah}
📚 [Surah Yusuf (12): 86]

2) al-Hamm is related to the loss one anticipates which causes him to worry about his future. Example: students worrying about their results, parents worrying about the future of their children, etc.

The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate, saying:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ

“O Allaah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief…”
📚 [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2893, 5425, 6363, 6369)]

3) al-Ghamm is related to the grief felt at the time of losing something or someone, i.e. what is related to the present. Example: when Yunus عليه السلام was in the belly of the whale (or big fish), Allaah تعالى relieved him of his suffering, saying:

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ

{So We answered his call, and delivered him from the grief}
📚 [Surah al-Anbiyaa (21): 88]

From the essential Duaa to be made in the prayer

Imaam al-Bukhaaree mentioned in his Saheeh:

Book: Call to Prayers (Adhaan)

(149) Chapter: Invocation before the Tasleem

I asked Allaah’s Messenger to teach me an invocation so that I may invoke Allaah with it in my prayer. He told me to say:

Even if only one deed was accepted...

Yahya al-Ghassaanee said: A needy person came to Ibn `Umar, so he (Ibn `Umar) asked his son to give him a Deenaar. His son said to him: “May Allaah accept this from you, O my father!” He replied: If I come to know that Allaah تعالى has accepted from me even one Sajdah or even one Dirham in charity, nothing would hide how much I would love to die (in that state). Do you know from whom does Allaah accept (their good deeds)? (He then recited): {Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqoon}

A sincere Believer's fear...

📖 QUR’AAN:
While describing the characteristics of the Believers of this Ummah, Allaah جل وعلا says:

وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوا وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ * أُولَـٰئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ

Bid`ah: The Highway to Hellfire

🎓Shaikh al-Albaanee رحمه ﷲ said:

💠The foundations of Bid`ah are four:

1️⃣ First:
(Following) the Weak Ahaadeeth, which can neither be relied upon nor permissible to be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. So, it is not permissible to follow/implement such narrations, as we have mentioned in the introduction of the book: "صفة الصلاة النبي" (Description of the Prophet's prayer). And this is what a group of scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah and others follow.

False visions and dreams of Ikhwaan al-Mufsideen

Ikhwaan al-Mufsideen and their false visions and dreams:

🚫A) Back in 2013, during the 2nd Egyptian revolt/protest, some "Shaikh" made a claim, saying: "some righteous people in al-Madeenah saw a dream that Jibreel عليه السلام had descended in support of the people who had gathered around the Masjid Raabi`ah Al-Adawiyah (the spot of their protest)."

📑 Note:
1. Who are these "righteous people" who saw the dream?
2. In a narration, it is reported that it is sufficient to consider a person to have lied, who narrates everything that he hears. (or as the Prophet had said).
3. How are they sure they saw Jibreel
4. When Jibreel عليه السلام came to the Companions in a human form, they could not recognize him. And except for the Prophets and Messengers, none has been given permission to see him in his original form.
5. How can Jibreel عليه السلام support a people in an act (protest) which is against the Sunnah?
6. It could have been Shaitaan! Shaitaan came in a human form in support of the Mushrikeen during the battle of Badr.
7. There is no authentic report that any of the Companions ever made a claim of seeing Jibreel عليه السلام in their dreams - neither during the lifetime of the Prophet nor after his demise.

🌴🌴🌴

🚫B) Salman al-Audah made a claim that he saw the Prophet and his Companions in his dream, and that he asked the Prophet a few questions and he responded to them. Then Salman sought his permission to write them down as people have formed many principles and rules in the Deen, and everyone has gone their different ways. And that this writing will help them unite and come back to his Sunnah and the right way. Then he claims that the Prophet gave him permission to write and then to also said to present it to him so that he could review it and correct the mistakes.

📑 Note:
1. Whoever sees the Prophet in his dream - as per the description in the Ahaadeeth - then indeed he has seen him . [Saheehain]
2. Anyone who claims to have seen the Prophet in a form other than what has been described in the Ahaadeeth has clearly lied. Example: saying that they saw him without a beard.
3. Dreams are the 46th part of Prophethood, and the righteous man will see his dream come true.
4. But no dreams can add or reduce anything from the Sharee`ah as it has been completed and perfected.
5. No one from the Salaf authenticated or unauthenticated a narration based on dreams.
6. No one from the Salaf accepted dreams as Hujjah (proof) in the matters of Sharee`ah.
7. Saying that principles and rules have divided the Ummah is Baatil (falsehood). Rather principles and rules were made based on the Qur'aan and Sunnah, so how can they divide the Ummah?
8. Principles and rules were made to prevent division and to prevent personal interpretations of the Text. Even mathematics has a set of rules: "BODMAS" or "PEMDAS" to limit the answer.
9. The Companions faced many difficulties and differed in some of the issues of Fiqh. But no one said that the Prophet corrected it for them or guided them in their dreams.
10. This is one of the methods the Sufees employ. Seeing a good dream is from the 46th part of Nubuwway (Prophethood) and it is a way of receiving glad tidings for the Believers. But what Salman al-`Audah is doing is giving an open invitation to some of the Sufees (the “Awliyaa” and the “Abdaal” among them) to interpolate in the Deen of Allaah as they please. If it is allowed to take knowledge through dreams, then they have more rights to this way of learning. They claim to receive Kashf (visions in the state of wakefulness) and they also claim to receive revelations directly from Allaah, as they say:

حدثني قلبي عن ربي...

"My heart informed me from my Lord…"

We seek Allaah’s refuge from such foolishness.

🌴🌴🌴

🚫C) Now here is the vision of the biggest evil of them all, `Amr Khaalid, the Egyptian speaker, who claimed that in 2011, during the 1st protest, in the Tahreer Square, he saw Allaah! Not the miracles of Allaah, nor His Signs, but Allaah Himself, and not in his dreams, but while he was wide awake and in that Maidaan (Square). And Allaah's refuge is sought from such foolishness.

And he continues that when he was in that Square - in that mix gathering of men and women, young and old, Muslims and Christians - he felt like he was amongst the Angels!

📑 Note:
1. Allaah تعالى mentioned in Surah al-A`raaf, that when Moosaa عليه السلام requested Allaah to show Himself so that he can see Him, Allaah جل وعلا replied: {"You cannot see Me, but look upon the mountain if it stands still in its place then you shall see Me." So when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He made it collapse to dust, and Moosaa fell down unconscious. Then when he recovered his senses he said: "Glory be to You (O Allaah), I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of the believers."}
2. Moosaa عليه السلام could not see Allaah, but this dude could?!
3. Moosaa عليه السلام fell down unconscious, but this dude did not?! Is he stronger than Moosaa عليه السلام?!
4. The mountain collapsed to dust, but this Square is intact till now?!
5. The most pious of people - after the Prophets عليهم السلام - i.e. the Companions, in the best of time, i.e. during the lifetime of the Prophet , neither during Laylatul-Qadr nor on the Day of `Arafah - they never made such a claim; yet Allaah appeared to this man, in the worst of situations, where there was intermingling of men and women, boys and girls, Muslims with Christians, dancing and singing!!!
6. In a long Hadeeth about al-Dajjaal, the Prophet said: "Bear this thing in mind that none amongst you would be able to see Allaah عز وجل until he dies." [Saheeh Muslim]
7. Narrated Masrooq: I said to `Aaishah: "O Mother! Did Prophet Muhammad see his Lord?" `Aaishah said: "What you have said made my hair stand on end! Know that if somebody tells you one of the following three things, he is a liar: {A} Whoever tells you that Muhammad saw his Lord, is a liar." Then `Aaishah recited the Aayah: {No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision. He is the Most Courteous Well-Acquainted with all things.} (6.103) and also the Aayah {It is not fitting for a human being that Allaah should speak to him except by inspiration or from behind a veil.} (42.51) `Aaishah further said: {B} "And whoever tells you that the Prophet knows what is going to happen tomorrow, is a liar." She then recited: {No soul can know what it will earn tomorrow} (31.34) She added: {C} "And whoever tells you that he concealed (some of Allaah's commandments) is a liar." Then she recited: {O Messenger! Proclaim (the Message) which has been sent down to you from your Lord..} (5.67) `Aaishah added. "But the Prophet saw Jibreel in his true form twice." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]

💢💢💢

All this shows that even in this age of advancement and easy availability of knowledge, there are more Juhhaal (ignorant) than ever before. People are seeking information but not the knowledge. Beneficial knowledge is that which guides the person to the Truth and righteous deeds, and not towards such falsehood and ignorance.

Types of Fitan

⚡ Types of Fitan (calamities/affliction)
[Along with the advice by Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen not to expose one self to them]

▶️ There are two types of Fitan which affect a person:

➡️ 1) Affliction in the self: (And this is from the worldly perspective). This includes loss in wealth, health, live, honor, hunger, fear or any other type of physical or psychological loss or affliction. As Allaah تعالى said:

{And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits…}
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 155]

➡️ 2) Affliction in the Deen: (and this is from the perspective of the Hereafter). Affliction in the Deen is far worse than affliction in the self. As Allaah تعالى said:

{And Al-Fitnah (affliction in the Deen) is worse than killing}
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 191]

And

{...and Al-Fitnah is a greater (crime) than killing}
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 217]

This includes being afflicted by:
🚫 Shirk,
🚫 or Bid`ah,
🚫 or belittling the Sunnah or authentic Ahaadeeth,
🚫 or getting confused even after knowing the correct path,
🚫 or having doubts about the Deen,
🚫 or chasing the desires,
🚫 or giving preference to personal opinions over the Texts,
🚫 or laziness in religious duties,
🚫 or self-amazement,
🚫 or following the path of falsehood after being guided,
🚫 or swaying between groups and parties etc.

Part of this affliction also includes being prevented from carrying out the religious duties by the enemies, or persecution in the name of religion. As Allaah تعالى said:

{They (the enemies) had nothing against them (the believers), except that they believed in Allaah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise!}
📚 [Surah al-Burooj (85): 8]

Affliction in the Deen can lead to misguidance and eternal damnation. Moreover, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم frequently used to supplicate saying:

يَا مُقَلِّبَ القُلُوبِ، ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ

❝O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.❞
📚 [Sunan al-Tirmidhee and Sunan Ibn Maajah, and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

🌴🌴🌴

⚡ Do not expose yourselves to Fitan:

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen said:
❝We also learn from this Aayah that al-Fitnah - i.e. preventing the people from following their Deen (Islaam) - is a greater (crime) than killing them; because in their killing, the maximum they'll miss out on is this worldly life. But if they are prevented from (learning and having) Imaan then they will lose in this world and the Hereafter.

And many people approach the places of Fitan (e.g. a bad company, or an environment that would corrupt their religious beliefs and morals) and they think that this Fitnah will not affect (or harm) them. But if they continue like this, then it won't be long before they are overtaken by the Fitnah. This is why the Prophet ﷺ said: ❝Let him who hears of the Dajjaal (Antichrist) go far from him for I swear by Allaah that a man will come to him thinking that he (the Dajjaal) is a believer, then he will follow him because of the deceptive arguments he (the Dajjaal) will put forward (to confuse him).❞
📚 [Sunan Abu Dawood (4319) and graded as "Saheeh" by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

The important thing is that a person should not expose himself to Fitan. How many people approached the places of Fitan thinking that they were immune to it, but they were not!❞
📚 [Tafseer of Surah al-Baqarah by Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (3/59-60)]

The Fitnah related with the two Eids:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

From the past few years, it is becoming a common sight to see some people – especially those liberals who pretend to be more merciful – making posts and giving out suggestions about the two Eids and the `Ibaadah (worship) related with them. One might be deceived by them into believing that their view is better than what the Sunnah has to offer.

🚫 So every Eid al-Fitr we have the issue being raised of “giving Zakaat al-Fitr in cash” instead of staple food (rice, dates, wheat etc.) to the poor.

🚫 And every Eid al-Adhha we have the issue being raised of “animal cruelty” and “donate the money to the poor instead of sacrificing the animal on Eid”.

Why scholars differed while grading the Ahaadeeth from the 4 Sunan

💠 This is a brief clarification on why a Hadeeth has two different grading - which has caused some confusion among the general mass - especially regarding the Ahaadeeth from the 4 Sunans (Sunan Abu Dawood, Sunan al-Tirmidhee, Sunan al-Nasaa’ee and Sunan Ibn Maajah):

🌟1) In the English world, or for most of the English readers, there are two sources for the Hadeeth grading from the books of contemporary scholars:
➡a) from the Books of Shaikh al-Albaanee (which many often rely while translating the Hadeeth in their posts),
➡b) and then there is by Darussalam, who have incorporated the checking by Shaikh Zubair `Alee Zai.

Definition: The Two Black Things

Question: What are the two black things, and why are they named as such, even though water is colorless?

Answer: The two black things are: dates and water, as mentioned in the Hadeeth reported in the Saheehain.

Narrated `Urwah: `Aaishah رضي الله عنها said to me: O my nephew! We used to see the crescent, and then the crescent and then the crescent in this way we saw three crescents in two months and no fire (for cooking) used to be made in the houses of Allaah’s Messenger . I said: “O my aunt! Then what use to sustain you?” `Aaishah said: The two black things: dates and water. [Saheehain]

Brief Comments on Riyaadh al-Saaliheen #116

Preparing for the last ten nights of Ramadhaan

Chapter: Being generous and diligent in doing what has been enjoined, and increasing in doing more good deeds in the Month of Ramadhaan, and especially more in the last ten days of Ramadhaan.

1222 - Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنه said: The Prophet was the most generous of the people, and he used to be the most generous during the month of Ramadhaan when Jibreel visited him, and Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadhaan till the end of the month. The Prophet used to recite the Qur’aan to Jibreel, and when Jibreel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast (rain-bearing) wind (which causes welfare).

Qur'aan singers: From the Signs of the Hour

🌟 From the signs of the hours: Giving preference to the man with a nice voice to lead the prayers

The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
❝Hasten to (good) deeds (before the appearance) of six traits:
1. The leadership of the foolish,
2. Abundance of (corrupt) police (squads),
3. Severing ties of kinship,
4. Selling of justice (and loss of trustworthiness through bribing),
5. Making light of bloodshed,
6. Emergence of a (new) generation who will recite the Qur’aan like singing. They (the people) will sent forth a man (to lead them in prayers) even though he would not be the one who has the most understanding or more knowledgeable than them. They will not send him forth except that he sings it (the Qur’aan) for them.❞

📚[al-Tabaraanee in al-Kabeer (59, 60) and the wording is his, Musnad Ahmad (16040, 23970) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. In Musnad Ahmad, the wording is: ❝Emergence of a (new) generation who will recite the Qur’aan like singing. They will send him forth so that he sings it (the Qur’aan) for them, even though he would be the least knowledgeable among them.❞]

📑 There is a difference between beautifying your voice while reciting the Qur’aan, which is recommended, and reciting the Qur’aan like singing, which is disparaged.

📑 In Faidh al-Qadeer it is mentioned that “singing the Qur’aan” means: “reciting it like a song, in which the words are stretched or shrunk, or recited out of place (while ignoring the rules of Tajweed).”

📑 Al-`Allaamah Abu `Abdullaah Ibn al-Haaj al-Maalikee رحمه الله (d. 737H) said:
“Chapter: The characteristics of the Imaam who should be made to lead the night prayers in Ramadhaan:

He should be from the people of knowledge, known for his good manners and religiosity, in opposition to what some of them do today. A majority of them send forth a man to lead them in prayer because of his nice voice and not because of his religiosity. And Imaam Maalik had said: The people, who give precedence to the man with a nice voice to lead them in prayer, in fact send him forth so that he could sing it (the Qur’aan) to them.”

The most misused/abused phrases

The most misused/abused phrases by the people to cover-up their mistakes:

1 "Only Allaah can judge"
2 "You don't know what is in the heart"

The statements are true but they are intentionally applied (to support) a wrong (cause). [This was said by `Alee رضي الله عنه in his reply to the Khawaarij - Saheeh Muslim]

The first statement was uttered by the Khawaarij against `Alee The Khawaarij denied the role of man in making decisions and forming judgments; whereas, we do indeed have court systems and judges to make judgments. [See the long conversation between Ibn `Abbaas and the Khawaarij]
