Do not be among those who recite the Qur’aan but curse themselves:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Shaikh Saaleh bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan غفر الله له said:

“As for the saying of Allaah تعالى:

{…not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.} [Surah al-Faatihah (1): 7]

{those who earned Your Anger}, they are the scholars, those who do not act upon the knowledge that they have.

{nor of those who went astray}, they are those who do actions without knowledge.

As for the first, then it is from the characteristics of the Jews; and as for the second, then it is from the characteristics of the Christians. But many people, when they read the (Books of) Tafseer - that the Jews are the ones who have incurred the wrath (of Allaah), and that the Christians are the ones who have gone astray - the Jaahil (ignorant) one thinks that this (verse) is specific only for them (the Jews and Christians); while he reads/recites that his Lord has made it Fardh (compulsory) upon him that he supplicates (to Allaah تعالى) with this Du`aa and that he seeks (Allaah’s) protection from the path of the people having these (bad) characteristics.

Ya Sub-haan Allaah! (It is amazing) how (Allaah تعالى) teaches him, and chose for him, and made it compulsory upon him that he should constantly supplicate to his Lord (with this Du`aa), while he (man) is unmindful and careless about it and does not perceive that this action of his is from having bad thoughts about Allaah.”

Here are a few example of how a person can curse himself or establish evidence against himself:

As Shaikh al-Fawzaan had said earlier, the ignorant recites the Qur’aan but only limits its application on a particular set of people and fail to evaluate that they themselves have fallen into the mire which they are being warned against.

Allaah تعالى says:

﴿بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ

{Nay! Man will be a witness against himself} [Surah al-Qiyaamah (75): 14]

Example #1:
[Surah al-Faatihah (1): 7]

{…not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.}

{those who earned Your Anger}, this is concerning the Jews, those who do not act upon the knowledge that they have.

{nor of those who went astray}, and this is concerning the Christians, those who had the enthusiasm to do good deeds but did not seek knowledge.

So, if a person seeks knowledge but does not act upon it, he is treading the path of the Jews; and if he does not try to seek knowledge, then he is treading the path of the Christians.

So the person’s recitation has become a Hujjah (evidence) AGAINST him instead of FOR him.

Example #2:
[Surah al-Baqarah (2): 159]

{Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers.}

Even though this Aayah is in regards to the people of the Book, Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه still said as mentioned in the Saheehain: “If it was not for the Aayah in Allaah's Book, I would not have narrated a single Hadith”, then he recited this Aayah.

So those who hide knowledge after knowing it and do not advice when consulted, they are incurring the curse of Allaah and the curse of those who curse (i.e. the Angels and the mankind).

Example #3:
[Surah Jumu`ah (62): 5]

{The likeness of those who were entrusted with the (obligation of the) Tauraat (Torah) (i.e. to obey its commandments and to practice its legal laws), but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is as the likeness of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books (but understands nothing from them). How bad is the example (or the likeness) of people who deny the Aayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah. And Allah guides not the people who are Dhaalimoon.}

The people of the Book were given the scriptures but they did not learn it nor implement it, so Allaah resembled them to the donkey which carries book but does not understand it.

And we have been given the Qur’aan, and among us are those who do not recite it; and those who recite it but do not understand it; and those who understand it but do not implement it.

***

These are some of the ways people are either cursing themselves or establishing evidences against themselves.

And Allaah knows best.
