You, yes you…Fear Allaah!

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

What is wrong with the people that they do not accept the statement: “Fear Allaah!”

If you were to say to one of them: “Fear Allaah!”, he would turn back on you and say: “Who are you? How dare you say to me: ‘Fear Allaah!’”
There are many such statements in the Qur’aan, the Sunnah and the statements of the Salaf, but only a few will be mentioned:

1. Fear Allaah! اتق الله

The statement said by Allaah تعالى to the best of mankind, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم:

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ اتَّقِ اللَّـهَ وَلَا تُطِعِ الْكَافِرِينَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا﴾

{O Prophet! Fear Allaah, and obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites (i.e., do not follow their advices). Verily! Allaah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise.} [Surah al-Ahzaab (33):1]

2. Fear Allaah! اتق الله

A statement said by one Khaleefah to the other. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, on his death bed, advised `Umar رضي الله عنه saying:

“Fear Allaah O `Umar! And know that for Allaah there are deeds (which are to be done) in the day which He does not accept in the night; and actions (which are to be done) in the night which He does not accept in the day.” [Hilyatul Awliyaa and Sifatus Safwah of Ibn al-Jawzee]

So what’s wrong with the people that they do not accept from anyone the advice: “Fear Allaah!”

And we have in the incident of Haroon al-Rasheed a beautiful example:

It has been mentioned that once a Jew was in need of something from the Khaleefah Haroon al-Rasheed. He frequented his door for a year but was not able to have his needs fulfilled. One day he stood at the door and when Haroon al-Rasheed came out, the Jew rushed till he came and stood in front of him and said: “Fear Allaah O Ameer al-Mu’mineen!” Haroon al-Rasheed came down of his mount and fell down into prostration. When he raised his head, the Jew asked for his needs and it was fulfilled. When Haroon came back, it was said to him: “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen! You came down off your mount because of a Jew’s statement?” He said: “No! Rather, I remembered the saying of Allaah تعالى:

﴿وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ اتَّقِ اللَّـهَ أَخَذَتْهُ الْعِزَّةُ بِالْإِثْمِ ۚ فَحَسْبُهُ جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ﴾

{And when it is said to him, “Fear Allaah”, he is led by arrogance to (more) crime. So enough for him is Hell, and worst indeed is that place to rest!} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 206]
[Tafseer al-Qurtobee (3/19)]

So what do you think you would do? Would you be among those who go into prostration or those who have been mentioned in this verse??!

Narrated `Abdullaah (Ibn Mas`ood) رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The most beloved speech to Allaah is when a person says:

سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك

Subhaanak-Allaahumma, wa bihamdika, wa tabaarakasmuka, wa ta`aala jadduka wa laa ilaaha ghairuk (Glory and Praise be to You, O Allaah. Blessed be Your Name and Exalted be Your Majesty, there is none worthy of worship except You.)

And the most hated speech to Allaah is when a person says to another: ‘Fear Allaah!’ and he says (in return): ‘You (leave me alone and) be concerned about yourself!’” [al-Nasa’ee in `Amal al-Yaum wal-lailah and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Saheehah (2598, 2939). He also said: “There is no doubt that as a narration, it is more authentic as Mawqoof (statement of the Companion), but meaning wise it is Marfoo` (statement of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) because the Companion would not say something out of his own opinion as it is apparent (here).”

In another narration reported by al-Tabaraanee, `Abdullah رضي الله عنه said: “It is a major sin that a person says to his brother: ‘Fear Allaah!’ and he replies: ‘Be concerned about yourself! (Who are) you to command me?’”

In a further narration reported by al-Tabaraanee, `Abdullaah رضي الله عنه said: “It is sufficient a sin that a person gets angry when it is said to him: ‘Fear Allaah!’”]
