SHIRK:
The
greatest sin a person can commit against Allaah is shirk. Unfortunately, a lot
of people cannot define what shirk is and how to protect against it. Mostly,
they think that shirk is limited to idol worship. Whereas, it is more than
that; shirk can be committed by physical acts, including grave worship, tying a
black thread around one’s arm/leg etc. It can be done by speech, e.g. taking
oath by other than Allaah, or by elevating someone above Allaah by one’s speech
etc. It can also be done by one’s thought or inner feelings like believing that
other than Allaah can benefit or harm you; fearing other than Allaah etc.
No
matter whatever way it is, Shirk is the number one cause for the people’s
deviation from the truth.
{It is those
who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah and worship none but Him Alone) and
confuse not their Belief with Zulm (wrong, i.e. by worshipping others
besides Allaah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided.} [Surah Al-An`aam (6):82]
{Verily, Allaah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners
(in worship) with Him, but He forgives whom He wills, sins other than that, and
whoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah, has indeed strayed far away
(from the truth).} [Surah Al-Nisaa’ (4):116]
FOLLOWING THE DESIRES:
The moment a person follows his
desires, the path of sins open up. A person, who sins but then sincerely
repents, is forgiven by Allaah. But, in present day world, the truth is
disbelieved, and the falsehood is openly supported. If this is not misguidance
then what is? Humiliation is the end of those who follow their desires in
disobedience to Allaah:
{Have you
seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilaah (god)? And
Allaah knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his
heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after Allaah? Will
you not then remember?} [Surah Al-Jaathiyah (45): 23]
{It is not
for a believer, man or woman, when Allaah and His Messenger [صلى الله عليه وسلم], have
decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And
whoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger
he has indeed strayed into a plain error.}
[Al-Ahzaab (33): 36]
{So follow not the lusts (of your
hearts), lest you avoid justice;} [Surah Al-Nisa (4):135]
{O Daawood (David)! Verily, We have placed you as a successor on
the earth; so judge you between men in truth (and justice) and follow not your
desire – for it will mislead you from the path of Allaah. Verily, those who
wander astray from the path of Allaah (shall) have a severe torment, because
they forgot the Day of Reckoning.} [Surah Saad (38): 26]
{But as for
him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure
evil desires and lusts. Verily, Paradise will be his abode.} [Surah Al-Naziaat (79): 40]
{And who is
more astray than one who follows his own lusts, without guidance from Allaah?
Verily, Allaah guides not the people who are Zaalimoon (wrong doers,
disobedient to Allaah, and polytheists).}
[Surah Al-Qasas (28): 50]
NEGLIGENT PARENTS:
No doubt that obedience to the parents
is enjoined upon every human being. It is one of the greatest acts after the
worship of Allaah. But there are certain limitations to that. As long as the
parents are not forcing you to disobey Allaah, you have no other option but to
obey them; but if they do, then you should not obey them in that:
{And We have
enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents; but if they strive to
make you join with Me (in worship) anything (as a partner) of which you have no
knowledge, then obey them not.} [Surah al-`Ankaboot (29):8]
If the parents are going to
celebrate Christmas, Halloweens, New Years Eve, birthdays and other pagan
festivals, what positive example are they going to be for their children?
Narrated Abu Hurairah
وسلم said: “No child is born except
on Al-Fitrah (Islaam) and then his parents turn him into a Jew, Christian or
Magian – like an animal which produces a perfect young animal; do you see any
part of its body amputated?" Then he recited: {The religion of pure Islamic Faith (Hanifa),(i.e. to
worship none but Allaah), The pure Allaah's Islamic nature with which He
(Allaah) has created mankind. Let There be no change in Allaah's religion (i.e.
to join none in Allaah's worship). That is the straight religion; but most of
men know not...}” [Surah al-Room
(30): 30] [Reported by Bukhari & Muslim]
{When it is
said to them: "Follow what Allaah has sent down." They say:
"Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following." (Would
they do that!) even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were
they guided?} [Surah al-Baqarah (2):170]
The best example of this is the story of Abu Taalib, the uncle of
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who supported
him dearly but did not accept Islaam because of his unwillingness to let go of the
religion of his father.
Sa`eed Ibn Musayib said that his father informed him that when Abu
Taalib was dying, the Prophet
him and found Abu Jahl and Abdullaah bin Abi Umayyah already present. The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to Abu Taalib,
“O my uncle! Say Laa ilaaha
ilallaah a word (with which) I will plea for you with Allaah (on the Day of
Judgement).” So, Abu Jahl and Abdullaah bin Abi Umayyah
said, “O Abu Taalib! Do you wish to abandon the religion of (your father) Abdul
Muttalib.” The Prophet repeated his words, and they too kept repeating their
words till Abu Talib’s last words were, “Upon the religion of Abdul Muttalib”,
and he refused to say Laa ilaaha ilallaah. The Prophet said, “I will invoke Allaah for
forgiveness for you, as long as I am not prohibited from doing so.” So, the following verse was
revealed, {It is not (proper) for the
Prophet and those who believe to ask Allaah's forgiveness for the Mushrikeen,
even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the
dwellers of the Fire.} [Surah Al-Tawbah (9): 113 (Ibn Katheer)]
WIFE, CHILDREN
& WEALTH:
How many times has it happened that
a man has been distracted from obeying Allaah by his wife or his children or
his wealth because of his indulging in them excessively?
{O you who
believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the
remembrance of Allaah. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers.} [Surah al-Munaafiqoon (63):9]
{O you who
believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you
(who may stop you from the obedience of Allaah); therefore beware of them! But
if you pardon (them) and overlook, and forgive (their faults), then verily, Allaah
is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.} [Surah al-Taghaabun (64):
14-15]
“They might direct the man to sever
his relation or disobey his Lord. The man, who loves his wives and children,
might obey them in this case.” Ibn Abi Haatim recorded that Ibn `Abbaas said to
a man who asked him about this Aayah, {O you who
believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you;
therefore beware of them!} "There were men who embraced
Islaam in Makkah and wanted to migrate to Allaah’s Messenger . However, their
wives and children refused to allow them. Later when they joined Allaah’s
Messenger, they found that those who were with him (the Companions) have gained
knowledge in the religion, so they were about to punish their wives and
children. Allaah the Exalted sent down this Aayah, {But if you pardon (them) and
overlook, and forgive, then verily, Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.}” [Ibn Katheer - Tirmidhee
collected this Hadeeth and said that it is Hasan Saheeh.]
And similarly a righteous woman is
put into trials by her disobedient husband.
EVIL FRIENDS:
And how many times it has happened that a good
man has been led astray by his friends? The friends – those who share with him cigarettes,
drugs and all the other evils; the simplest of man is addicted to the deadliest
of habits because of his friends.
The worst company is of those who are disobedient to Allaah, and worse still are those who are upon innovations while thinking that they are doing good:
said: “A man follows the religion of
his friend; so each one should consider whom he makes his friend.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4833) and Tirmidhee (2378),
and graded as “Hasan” (good) by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
{And
(remember) the Day when the heaven shall be rent asunder with clouds, and the
angels will be sent down, with a grand descending. The sovereignty on that Day
will be the true (sovereignty) belonging to the Most Gracious (Allaah), and it
will be a hard Day for the disbelievers (those who disbelieve in the Oneness of
Allaah – Islaamic Monotheism). And (remember) the Day when the Zaalim
(wrong doer, oppressor, polytheist) will bite at his hands, he will say:
"Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]).
"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a Khaleel (an
intimate friend)! "He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Qur'aan)
after it had come to me. And Shaitaan (Satan) is to man ever a deserter in the
hour of need.} [Surah al-Furqaan (25): 25-29]
ELDERS &
PEOPLE:
We should respect our elders, and
treat them kindly. But we should only obey them as long as they do not oppose
Allaah’s Book or the Prophet’s Sunnah.
{On the Day
when their faces will be turned over in the Fire, they will say: "Oh,
would that we had obeyed Allaah and obeyed the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم])."
And they will say: "Our Lord! Verily, we obeyed our chiefs and our great
ones, and they misled us from the (Right) “Way. "Our Lord! Give them
double torment and curse them with a mighty curse!} [Surah al-Ahzaab (33):
64-68]
GENERAL MAJORITY:
Majority is nothing but a group of
individuals. No matter how many people are there, it is still based on
individual desires; unless they have evidence for it from the Book of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى and the Sunnah of His Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. If majority
was the factor in deciding what is good or bad, we would all have been kaafirs
or mushriks or gays or lesbians, Allaah protect us from this, because this is
what the majority of the world individuals are preferring.
Since the majority of the world
population is non-Muslim, it simply rules out that we cannot follow them. Then
how can we justify the innovations which we find amongst the Muslims, by saying
that, “O the majority of them do it!”? If the majority of the Muslims are upon
innovation, it will still be an innovation – there is no justification for
that. Our simple stance is what the Qur’aan says and what the Sunnah says.
{And if you
obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allaah's
path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.} [Surah
al-An`aam (6): 116]
{And most of
them believe not in Allaah except that they attribute partners to Him (i.e.
they are Mushrikoon, i.e. polytheists.} [Surah
Yusuf (12): 106]
IGNORANTS POSING AS
SCHOLARS:
The below mentioned Ayaat and Ahaadeeth are
sufficient to explain the evils of the ignorant “scholars”.
{They (Jews
and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah.} [Surah at-Tawbah (9):
31]
Imam Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn
Jarir At-Tabari, and Baihaqi recorded a Hadith via several chains of narration,
from `Adi bin Hatim, may Allaah be pleased with him, who became Christian
during the time of Jahiliyyah. When the call of the Messenger of Allaah reached
his area, `Adi ran away to Ash-Sham, and his sister and several of his people
were captured. The Messenger of Allaah freed his sister and gave her gifts. So
she went to her brother and encouraged him to become Muslim and to go to the
Messenger of Allaah. `Adi, who was one of the chiefs of his people (the tribe
of Tai') and whose father, Hatim At-Ta'i, was known for his generosity, went to
Al-Madinah. When the people announced his arrival, `Adi went to the Messenger
of Allaah wearing a gold cross around his neck. The Messenger of Allaah recited
this Ayah; {They took
their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah}. `Adi commented, "I said,
`They did not worship them.''' The Prophet said, “Yes they did. They (rabbis and
monks) prohibited what was allowed (by Allaah) for them (Christians and Jews)
and allowed what was prohibited (by Allaah), and they (the people) obeyed them
(the scholars). This is how they worshipped them.”
Since the rabbis and monks made halaal
what was made haraam by Allaah, and they made haraam of what was
made halaal by Allaah, and the people followed them blindly – the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم called it an
act of worship. These people have disobeyed the Creator (Allaah) and obeyed the
creation (humans).
Narrated `Abdullaah bin `Amr: I
وسلم saying, “Allaah will not deprive you of
knowledge after he has given it to you, but it will be taken away through the
death of the religious learned men with their knowledge. Then there will remain
ignorant people who, when consulted, will give verdicts according to their
opinions whereby they will mislead others and go astray.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the
Messenger of Allaah
وسلم said:
“There will come to
the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest, and
the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful, and the
faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidhah will decide
matters.” It was said 'Who are the Ruwaibidhah?'
He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Vile
and base men who will speak in the affairs of the people.” [Sunan Ibn Maajah (4036). Shaikh
al-Albaanee graded it as “Hasan li shawaahidihee” (Good due to other supporting
chains) in “al-Saheehah” (1887). Shaikh Muqbil also graded it as “Hasan li
ghairihee” in “Saheeh Dalaail al-Nubuwwah” (568)]
The Companion,
`Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood laments, “How will it be
when the trials overcome you, in which the young grow old and the old grow
senile. And the people take the bid`ah as the Sunnah, and when it changes
they say: the Sunnah has changed.” It was
said: “when will this be O Abu Abdul-Rahmaan?” He replied: “When your
speakers are many and your scholars are few, and the wealthy ones are plenty
and the trustworthy ones are few, and the dunya is pursued with the actions of
the Hereafter.” [ad-Daarimee
(186), Shaykh al-Albaanee graded one of the chain as “Saheeh” and the other as “Hasan”
in his books “Salaat al-Taraaweeh” and “Qiyaam Ramadhaan” and Saheeh al
Targheeb (111)]
JEWS & CHRISTIANS:
{Many of the
people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you
away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their own
selves, even after the truth (that Muhammad [صلى الله عليه
is Allaah's Messenger) has become manifest to them.] [Surah al-Baqarah (2):
109]
{A party of the
people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish to lead you astray.} [Surah Aali-`Imraan (3):
69]
{And even if you were to bring to the people of the Scripture
(Jews and Christians) all the Ayaat (proofs, verses, evidences, lessons, signs,
revelations, etc.), they would not follow your Qiblah (prayer direction), nor
are you going to follow their Qiblah (prayer direction). And they will not
follow each other's Qiblah (prayer direction). Verily, if you follow their
desires after that which you have received of knowledge (from Allaah), then
indeed you will be one of the Zaalimoon (polytheists, wrongdoers).} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 145]
Narrated Abu Sa`eed Al Khudree
وسلم said: “You will follow the ways of those nations who were
before you, span by span and cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch) so much so
that even if they entered a hole of
a mastigure, you would follow them.” We said,
"O Allaah's Apostle! (Do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?" He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whom
else?” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]
SHAITAAN:
We have been warned numerous times in the
Qur’aan that Shaitaan is our open enemy, and that we have to treat him as our
enemy. But unfortunately, we have made him our friend. Allaah protect us from
the accursed Shaitaan:
{And among mankind is he who disputes concerning Allaah, without
knowledge, and follows every rebellious (disobedient to Allaah) Shaitaan
(devil) (devoid of every kind of good). For him (the devil) it is decreed that
whosoever follows him, he will mislead him, and will drive him to the torment
of the Fire.} [Surah
al-Hajj (22): 3-4]
{But
Shaitaan (Satan) wishes to lead them far astray.} [Surah al-Nisaa’ (4): 60]
SINS:
{Verily, Allaah
guides not one who is a Musrif (a polytheist, or a murderer who shed
blood without a right, or those who commit great sins, oppressor,
transgressor), a liar!} [Surah Ghaafir (40):
28]
{And
Allaah guides not the people, who are Zaalimoon (wrong doers).} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 258]
{How shall Allaah
guide a people who disbelieved after their Belief and after they bore witness
that the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه
is true and after clear proofs had come to them? And Allaah guides not the
people who are Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrong doers).} [Surah Aali-`Imraan (3): 86]
OPPOSING THE SUNNAH:
OPPOSING THE SUNNAH:
{It is not for a believer, man
or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should
have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His
Messenger, he has indeed strayed into a plain error.} [Surah al-Ahzaab (33): 36]
{And
let those who oppose the Messenger's commandment, beware, lest some Fitnah
should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them} [Surah al-Noor (24):63]
