“Encouragement towards righteousness” is a series of Ahaadeeth
gathered together, the purpose of which is to remind the readers of the day to
day acts which will help in effacing the Minor Sins.
Definition
of Major sins:
The major sins have been defined by the scholars as what
is forbidden by Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and that
which has been reported from the Salaf al-Saalih (pious predecessors) and which
entails either a threat of punishment [1]
in the Hereafter either explicitly mentioned by the Qur’aan or the Hadeeth; or
which has a prescribed legal penalty (Hadd) [2];
or being accursed by Allaah or His Messenger
We have to bear in mind that some major sins are most heinous than another.
This is because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has enlisted Shirk (worshipping others
with Allaah) though a polytheist will suffer eternal torture in Fire and will
never be forgiven. [Adopted from Imaam al-Dhahabee’s book “al-Kabaair”]
[1] Sins entailing threats:
Shirk, Kufr, Hypocrisy, not performing prayer. Example Allaah
says:
{Verily, whosoever sets up
partners in worship with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him,
and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Dhaalimoon (polytheists and
wrong-doers) there are no helpers. } [Sural al-Maa’idah (5): 72]
[2] Sins entailing
prescribed punishments: Adultery (done by a married person) is punished by
stoning to death; fornication is punished by flogging; a thief is punished by
cutting his hand, etc. Allaah تعالى says:
{Cut off (from the wrist
joint) the (right) hand of the thief, male or female, as a recompense for that
which they committed, a punishment by way of example from Allaah. And Allaah is
All-Powerful, All-Wise. } [Surah al-Maaidah (5): 38]
[3] Sins entailing curse
of Allaah: Hiding Allaah’s verses as Allaah تعالى
says:
{Verily, those who conceal
the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We
have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allaah
and cursed by the cursers. } [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 159]
EFFACING MAJOR SINS:
As for the Major sins,
then they are effaced through accepting Islaam (for a Kaafir), sincere
repentance and Hajj.
يُصِرُّواْ عَلَى مَا فَعَلُواْ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ}
{And those who, when they
commit an immorality or wrong themselves (by transgression), remember Allaah
and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allaah?}
[Surah aal-`Imraan (3): 135]
On the authority of `Amr bin al-`Aas رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said to him:
“Are you not aware of the
fact that Islaam wipes out all the previous (misdeeds)? Verily migration wipes
out all the previous (misdeeds), and verily the pilgrimage wipes out all the
(previous) misdeeds.” [Saheeh Muslim (220)]
EFFACING MINOR SNS:
There are many deeds – performed on daily basis - which
helps one in removing their minor sins. Here are some of them:
1. Fasting,
Taraaweeh, and the searching for Laylat-ul-Qadr:
said:
“Whoever establishes the
prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allaah’s
rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (35) and Saheeh Muslim (1665)]
“Whoever establishes prayers
during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to
attain Allaah’s rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be
forgiven.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (37) and Saheeh Muslim (1662)]
“Whoever observes fasts
during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allaah’s
rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (38) and Saheeh Muslim (1664)]
2. ANSWERING THE ADHAAN:
Sa`d bin Abu Waqqaas رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“If anyone says on hearing
the Muadhdhin: I testify that there is no one worthy of being worshiped but
Allaah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His
Messenger, (and that) I am satisfied with Allaah as my Lord, with Muhammad as
Messenger and with Islaam as Deen (code of life), his sins would be forgiven.” [Saheeh Muslim (749)]
3. Ablution
AND PRAYING TWO RAK`AAT AFTER IT:
Narrated Humraan (the freed slave of `Uthmaan bin `Affaan رضي الله عنه) I saw `Uthmaan bin `Affaan رضي الله عنه asking (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution (and when
it was brought) he poured water from it over his hands and washed them thrice
and then put his right hand in the water container and rinsed his mouth and
washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out. Then he washed
his face thrice and (then) forearms up to the elbows thrice, then passed his
wet hands over his head and then washed each foot thrice. After that `Uthmaan
said رضي الله عنه: I saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم performing ablution like this of mine, and he صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“If anyone performs ablution
like that of mine and offers a two-rak`aat prayer during which he does not
think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then his past sins
will be forgiven.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (159, 164, 1934, 6433) and
Saheeh Muslim (436, 442, 446)]
4. Five
daily prayers:
Narrated `Uthmaan رضي
I heard the Prophet
“If a man performs ablution
perfectly and then offers the compulsory congregational prayer, Allaah will
forgive his sins committed between that (prayer) and the (next) prayer till he
offers it.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (159, 160) and Saheeh Muslim (438,
440)]
Anas رضي الله عنه reported that a person came to Allaah’s
Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: Allaah's Messenger, I have
committed an offence which deserves imposition of HAD, so impose it upon me
according to the Book of Allaah. Thereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Were you not present with us
at the time of prayer?” He said: Yes. Thereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“You have been granted
pardon.” [Saheeh Muslim (7182)]
5. Friday
prayers:
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Five (daily) prayers and
from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins
committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed.”
[Saheeh Muslim (448)]
Abu Hurairah رضي
الله عنه reported: Verily the
Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Five (daily) prayers and
from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhaan to
Ramadhaan are expiation for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals)
provided one shuns the major sins.” [Saheeh Muslim (450)]
“Anyone who takes a bath on
Friday and cleans himself as much as he can and puts oil (on his hair) or
scents himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force his way
between two persons (assembled in the mosque for the Friday prayer), and prays
as much as is written for him and remains quiet when the Imaam delivers the
Khutbah, all his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be
forgiven.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (883, 910) and Saheeh Muslim (1867,
1868) from the Hadeeth of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه with the addition: “all his sins
in between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven with three days
extra.”]
6. saying
Aameen:
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Say Aameen when the Imaam
says it and if the Aameen of any one of you coincides with that of the angels
then all his past sins will be forgiven.” Ibn Shihab said: Allaah’s
Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say Aameen.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree
(780, 781, 782, 4475, 6402) and Saheeh Muslim (811, 812, 813, 816)]
7. AFTER RISING UP FROM RUKOO`:
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“When the Imaam says: ‘Sami`a-llaahu
liman hamidah’, you should say: ‘Allaahumma Rabbanaa laka-l-hamd.’ And if the
saying of any one of you coincides with that of the angels, all his past sins
will be forgiven.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (796, 3228) and Saheeh
Muslim (809)]
8. WALKING TOWARDS THE MASJID:
Narrated a person from the Ansaar: Sa`eed ibn al-Musayyab
said: An Ansaaree was breathing his last. He said: I narrate to you a
tradition, and I narrate it with the intention of getting a reward from Allaah.
I heard the Messenger of Allaah
“If any one of you performs
ablution and performs it very well, and goes out for prayer, he does not take
his right step but Allaah records a good work (or blessing) for him, and he
does not take his left step but Allaah remits one sin from him. Any one of you
may reside near the Masjid or far from it; if he comes to the Masjid and prays
in congregation, he will be forgiven (by Allaah). If he comes to the Masjid
while the people had prayed in part, and the prayer remained in part, and he
prays in congregation the part he joined, and completed the part he had missed,
he will enjoy similarly (i.e. he will be forgiven). If he comes to the Masjid
when the people had finished prayer, he will enjoy the same.” [Sunan
Abu Dawood (563) and graded as “Saheeh” by
Shaikh al-Albaanee]
9. PERFORMING
`Umrah:
said:
“From one `Umrah to another
`Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between them. And the reward of Hajj
Mabroor (the one accepted by Allaah) is nothing except Paradise.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (1773) and Saheeh Muslim (3127)]
10. Forgiving
debts:
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“There was a merchant who
used to lend the people, and whenever his debtor was in straitened
circumstances, he would say to his employees, ‘forgive him so that Allaah may
forgive us.’ So, Allaah forgave him.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2078)]
Narrated Hudhaifah رضي الله عنه: I heard the Prophet صلى
saying:
“Once a man died and was
asked: ‘What did you use to say (or do) (in your life time)?’ He replied: ‘I
was a businessman and used to give time to the rich to repay his debt and (used
to) deduct part of the debt of the poor.’ So he was forgiven (his sins.)”
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2391)]
11. SHAKING HANDS (WITH THE SAME
GENDER):
Narrated Al-Baraa’ ibn `Aazib رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“No two Muslims will meet and
shake hands, except that their sins will be forgiven before they separate.”
[Sunan Abu Dawood (5212), Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2727) and Sunan Ibn Maajah (3703)
and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
12. DEALING LENIENTLY WITH THE PEOPLE
IN WORLDLY MATTERS:
Jaabir bin `Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Allaah forgave a man who lived before you because he was mild
when selling, mild when buying and mild when demanding repayment.” [Sunan
al-Tirmidhee (1320) and graded as “Saheeh”
by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
In the narration from al-Bukhaaree on the authority of Jaabir
bin `Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Allaah’s Mercy be on him who is lenient in his buying,
selling, and demanding back his money.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2076)]
13. DOING THE ADHKAAR:
said:
“Whoever says: ‘Subhaan Allaahi
wa bihamdihi,’ one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if
they were as much as the foam of the sea.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree
(6405) and Saheeh Muslim (6508)]
b. ATONEMENT
OF THE GATHERING:
Abu Hurairah رضي
الله عنه narrated that the
Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Whoever sits in a sitting
and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from
that sitting of his: ‘Glory is to You, O Allaah, and praise, I bear witness
that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I
repent to You, (Subhaanaka Allaahumma Wa Bihamdika Wa Ashhadu An Laa Ilaaha Illaa
Anta, Astaghfiruka Wa Atoobu Ilaik)’ whatever occurred in that sitting would be
forgiven to him.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3434) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
c. REMEMBRANCE
AFTER EVERY PRAYER:
Abu Hurairah
“If anyone extols Allaah (by
saying subhaan-Allaah) after every prayer thirty-three times, and praises
Allaah (by saying al-Hamdulillaah) thirty-three times, and declares His Greatness
(by saying Allaahu Akbar) thirty-three times, ninety-nine times in all, and
says to complete a hundred: There is no one worthy of being worshiped but
Allaah, having no partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him is
praise due, and He is Potent over everything, his sins will be forgiven even If
these are as abundant as the foam of the sea.” [Saheeh Muslim (1243)]
d. SUPPLICATING TO ALLAAH TROUGH HIS
NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES:
Narrated Mihjan ibn al-Adra’ رضي الله عنه: The Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم entered the Masjid and
saw a man who had finished his prayer, and was reciting the Tashahhud saying:
O Allaah, I ask you, O Allaah, the One, the eternally
besought of all, the One who begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none
comparable unto Him, that you forgive me my sins, you are Most Forgiving,
Merciful.
“He was forgiven”
(repeating three times.) [Sunan Abu Dawood (985), Sunan al-Nasa’ee (1301) and

“He who has taken food and
says at the end: `Al-hamdu lillaahi-lladhi at`amani hadha, wa razaqanihi min
ghairi haulin minni wa la quwwatin (All praise is due to Allaah Who has given
me food to eat and provided it without any endeavor on my part or any power),’
all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3458) and
graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
15.
diseases, sorrow, saddness, distress, Pricked by a thorn and every type of
harm:
Narrated `Aaishah
“No calamity befalls a Muslim
but that Allaah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were
the prick he receives from a thorn.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5640) and
Saheeh Muslim (6731, 6732). In the narration of Saheeh Muslim it is: “Allaah will record for him a good deed or obliterate his
sins”]
Narrated Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudree and Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنهما: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“No fatigue, nor disease, nor
sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were
the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allaah expiates some of his sins
for that.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5641, 5642)]
Narrated `Abdullaah رضي الله عنه: I visited Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم while he was suffering from a high fever. I said: O Allaah's
You have a high fever.
“Yes, I have as much fever as
two men of you.” I said: Is it because you will have a double
reward?
“Yes, it is so. No Muslim is
afflicted with any harm, even if it were the prick of a thorn, but that Allaah
expiates his sins because of that, as a tree sheds its leaves.”
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5648)]
16. Saying
LAa ilaaha illallaah sincerely:
Two men brought their dispute to the Prophet The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked the plaintiff to produce evidence,
but he had no evidence. So he asked the defendant to swear. He swore by Allaah:
There
is no one worthy of being worshiped but He. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Yes, you have done it, but
you have been forgiven for the sincerity of the statement: There is no one
worthy of being worshiped except Allaah.”
Abu Dawood said: This tradition means that he صلى الله عليه وسلم did not command him to make atonement.
[Sunan Abu Dawood (3275) and graded as “Saheeh”
by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
