Explanation of the Hadeeth: “I’ve been supported by awe over my enemies”

{We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they joined others in worship with Allaah, for which He had sent no authority.} [Surah aal-`Imraan (3): 151]

He تعالى also:

{[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved…} [Surah al-Anfaal (8): 12]

He تعالى also:

{And those of the people of the Scripture who backed them (the disbelievers) Allaah brought them down from their forts and cast terror into their hearts, (so that) a group (of them) you killed, and a group (of them) you made captives.} [Surah al-Ahzaab (33): 26]

The Prophet said: I have been given five things which were not given to anyone else before me:

1) Allaah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month's journey.
2) The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due.
3) The booty has been made Halaal (lawful) for me yet it was not lawful for anyone else before me.
4) I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection).
5) Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation only but I have been sent to all mankind.

Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said:
His (the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم) enemies were made to be afraid of him even when they were at the distance of one month’s journey. It is hoped that this advantage is also given to those who follow his صلى الله عليه وسلم path – by casting terror in the hearts of their enemies.

[TN: This fact that the enemies of Islaam are afraid of Muslims is further supported by the Hadeeth reported by Abu Dawood in his Sunnan, which is quoted down below in this post]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
In this Hadeeth the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned (some of) the favors which Allaah تعالى bestowed upon him and his Ummah: I have been given five things… The One who gave them to him is Allaah عز وجل, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم here limited to only five favors (which were not given to anyone before him), even though there were more than that – the scholars have listed them as more than thirteen.

In this Hadeeth the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم limited there count to only five, like how he صلى الله عليه وسلم would occasionally do it. Example: he صلى الله عليه وسلم would say: There are three whom Allaah تعالى will not speak to on the Day of Judgment… and then he صلى الله عليه وسلم would mention about them. Then on another occasion he صلى الله عليه وسلم would say: There are three whom Allaah تعالى will not speak to on the Day of Judgment… and he صلى الله عليه وسلم would mention people other than those mentioned previously.

These five blessings were not given to any Prophet or Messenger before him صلى الله عليه وسلم, and they are:

First: Allaah made me victorious by awe for a distance of one month's journey. The `Arabic word al-Ru`b (الرُعب) means fear, awe; meaning: his enemies would be terrified of him. They would be in (constant) fear of him even when they would be a month’s journey away from him. Fear is a lethal weapon in causing destruction (amongst) the enemy (ranks), because when they are terrified, making decisions becomes difficult (and they are demoralized), and they would not be able to face the ones they are afraid of, rather, they would (turn their back) and run away and not stand their ground.

And his صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: ...a distance of one month's journey, meaning: the distance that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would have covered in a months’ time in his era, and it does not mean the distance that would be covered by airplane in a month’s time or by a car.

Question: Is this benefit confirmed for his Ummah or not?
Answer: What is apparent is that it is confirmed for this Ummah (as well), as it means: help and support for his Deen, and his Ummah is included in it; but with a condition that the Ummah should be adherent to the teachings of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, as Allaah تعالى said:

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن تَنصُرُوا اللَّـهَ يَنصُرْكُمْ

{O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allaah, He will help you} [Surah Muhammad (47): 7]

(If the Ummah wants the same favor to continue) then this condition must be fulfilled, otherwise what we see are the failures and defeats the Muslims have been facing – now and in the past – because they are not supporting the Deen of Allaah. Had they helped (in the cause of) Allaah, Allaah عز وجل would have helped them. Allaah تعالى said:

{Truly, Allaah defends those who believe. Verily! Allaah likes not any treacherous ingrate to Allaah [those who are disobedient to Allaah but are obedient to Shaitaan.} [Surah al-Hajj (22): 38]

So this victory and help for the Ummah of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم will not be completed except with the fulfillment of the condition that this Ummah should be upon the Sharee`ah of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and his way of life.

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله also said:
Allaah made me victorious by awe, this favor is general – it is for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and his Ummah. But the Ummah here is being referred to those who are upon the guidance of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and are upon what he (and his Companions) were upon. This is not referring to those who claim to be from his Ummah but have abandoned and neglected a lot of things which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came with.

Allaah تعالى had mentioned about this condition in the Qur’aan as well. Allaah’s promise is that whoever establishes His Worship and does not disobey Him, Allaah will give them authority, make it easy for them to practice their religion and provide them safety.

{Allaah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islaam). And He will surely give them in exchange a SAFE SECURITY after their FEAR (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Faasiqoon (rebellious, disobedient to Allaah).} [Surah al-Noor (24): 55]

But when shirk is widespread in a community, peace and tranquility is removed from them.

Indeed it is a punishment from Allaah when He تعالى will take the fear of us from the hearts of the enemies.

Narrated Thawban: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: “Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allaah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and cast enervation into your hearts. Someone asked: What is Wahn (enervation) O Messenger of Allaah? He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: Love of the world and dislike of death. [Sunan Abu Dawood (4297) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Regarding opposing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and his Sunnah, Allaah تعالى warns:

﴿فَلْيَحْذَرِ الَّذِينَ يُخَـلِفُونَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ أَن تُصِيبَهُمْ فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ يُصِيبَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴾

{And let those who oppose the Messenger's commandment, beware, lest some Fitnah should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them} [Surah al-Noor (24):63]

Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: (It may be that) Stones are soon to descend upon you from the heavens! I say to you: ‘Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said...’ and you say to me: ‘Abu Bakr and Umar said!?’

Imaam Ahmad رحمه الله said: Do you know what the Fitnah is? The Fitnah is Shirk. May be the rejection of some of his words would cause one to have doubt and deviation in his heart and thereby be destroyed.

[The quotes of Ibn `Abbaas and Imaam Ahmad have been taken from Kitaab al-Tawheed of Shaikh Muhammad Ibn `Abdul Wahhaab, Chapter #38]

Shaikh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said: Fitnah (trials and tribulations, destruction in the land) does not occur except when the commandments of Allaah are neglected. For He تعالى has commanded us to adhere to the Haqq (truth) and commanded us with Sabr (patience). So fitnah occurs either when the truth is neglected or when patience is neglected.
