Police Brutality: A Legacy Of Shame!

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

There is a continuous rise in police brutality everywhere around the world, especially in the power-hungry “democratic” (democrazy) countries of the world, the US, France, India, Russia, Philippines, etc., and new laws are being introduced to give the police officers more authority and immunity from criminal prosecution. These laws are being introduced especially to suppress the voice of the oppositions, and to oppress the minorities, without the fear of any repercussion or backlash from the public. There is more police brutality in the “democratic” countries than anywhere else. The systematic oppression and killing of the African-Americans and Native-Americans in the US, the pogroms and extrajudicial punishments against the Muslims in India, Burma (Myanmar) and China, and racial attacks on the minorities in different parts of the world are being carried out with the help of the police and army personnel. The people (police) who are supposed to uphold the law and maintain peace and security are the ones who are the worst in torturing the minorities. In many of these countries, torturing the poor has no consequences.

All this was prophesied by the Prophet 1400 years ago, and a severe punishment awaits these perpetrators in the Hereafter.

IMPORTANT POINTS FROM THESE AHAADEETH:

The saying of the Prophet : Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see, Allaah تعالى informed him about them even before they existed. These types of people did not exist in the Prophet’s lifetime and he had not seen them before this. Such people did not exist in the earlier generations.

The saying of the Prophet : Men with whips like the tails of cow, what is meant is that those who strike people for no legitimate reason, like the oppressive police or others, whether that is on the orders of the state or otherwise.

Majority of the people who are at the receiving end of the police brutalities are the weak and the innocent, while the affluent ones get away with the crimes because of their wealth, social status, race, privileges etc.

The whip mentioned in the Ahaadeeth can also refer to the other weapons which are employed by the police officers including sticks, batons, truncheon, firearms, pepper sprays, teargas, Tasers, stun guns, etc.

AHAADEETH:

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported Allaah’s Messenger having said this:

Two are the types of denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the cow with them and they would be beating people, and the women who would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps of the Bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they would not smell its odor whereas its odor would be smelt from such and such distance.

[Saheeh Muslim (2128a)]

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported Allaah’s Messenger as saying:

Two are the types amongst the denizens of Hell, the one possessing whips like the tail of a cow, and they flog people with their help. (The second one) the women who would be naked in spite of their being dressed, who are seduced (to wrong paths) and seduce others with their hair high like humps. These women would not get into Paradise and they would not perceive the odor of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from such and such distance (from a great distance).

[Saheeh Muslim (2128b)]

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported Allaah’s Messenger as saying:

It is soon (going to happen), if you survive for a time you would certainly see people who would have whips in their hands like the tail of a cow. They would get up in the morning under the wrath of Allaah and they would get into the evening under the anger of Allaah.

[Saheeh Muslim (2857a)]

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported Allaah’s Messenger  as saying:

If you live for a time, you would certainly see people get up (in the morning) in the wrath of Allaah and getting into the evening under the curse of Allaah, and there would be in their hands (whips) like the tail of a cow.

[Saheeh Muslim (2857b)]

EXPLANATION:

Al-Nawawi رحمه الله said:

❝This Hadeeth is one of the miracles of Prophethood, (for these two types of people who were not present at the time of the Prophet have appeared and they exist now). With regard to those who would have whips, they are those who work for the police.❞

[Sharh al-Nawawi ‘ala Saheeh Muslim, 17/191]

Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said:

❝This is a stern warning that should be carefully regarded. The men in whose hands are whips like the tails of the cow are those who strike people unjustly such as policemen and others, whether that is done by order of the state or otherwise. For the state is only to be obeyed in Ma`roof (that which is judged as good, beneficial, or fitting by Islaamic law and Muslims of sound intellect). The Prophet said:  Obedience is mandatory only in Ma`roof.  He also said:  There is no obedience to anyone while in disobedience to Allaah.

[Majmoo` Fataawa Ibn Baaz (6/355)]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

❝The Prophet informed that there will be two types of people which the Prophet did not see (i.e. they did not exist in his time). The first category: it includes those who would use aggression against people unjustly and unlawfully, misusing their power in their violence against them. They are people who would be carrying whips, which would be similar to the tails of cow, and with which they would be flogging people unjustly. The scholars have said: “They are the police.” The oppressive police who would beat people unjustly – they would be the denizens of Hell-fire because whoever aids an unjust (ruler) will be entitled to what he deserves because of his sins.❞

[Fataawa Noorun `alaa al-Darb of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen]

Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله also said:

❝The statement of the Prophet : Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the cow with them and they would be beating people, the scholars have said that they are the police who beat the people unlawfully and unjustly. They will have whips which resembles the long tails of the cow, beating people with it. But as for beating the one who has transgressed, (then Allaah تعالى says):

﴿الزَّانِيَةُ وَالزَّانِي فَاجْلِدُوا كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِّنْهُمَا مِائَةَ جَلْدَةٍ ۖ وَلَا تَأْخُذْكُم بِهِمَا رَأْفَةٌ فِي دِينِ اللَّـهِ﴾

{The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allaah}

[Surah al-Noor (24): 2]

In the case of a transgressor, no pity is to be shown but to flog them as prescribed. But as for those who beat people unlawfully, then they will be among the denizens of the Hell-fire. And we seek Allaah’s refuge from this.❞

[Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (6/372-373)]

Al-Qaadhee `Iyyaadh رحمه الله said:

Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the cow with them and they would be beating people, it may mean: “fire has been guaranteed for them because of their oppression, cruelty, and their unjust elongated beating of the people with these whips or other objects…❞

[Sharh Saheeh Muslim of Qadhee `Iyyaadh (6/659)]

Ibn Hubairah رحمه الله said:

❝From this Hadeeth one learns that the Messenger of Allaah prophesied that these two types of people will emerge in his Ummah, who will come after him, this is why he said: …whom I did not see…, then he described them. …people having flogs like the tails of the cow with them and they would be beating people, the Messenger of Allaah described one of the characteristics of the people of the Hell-fire. If flogging people with whips is bad, then what about those who beat people with sticks and batons, and on a similar note with the likes of tent poles (made of bamboo sticks) or swords. To Allaah we complain. This is regarding those who beat people unjustly and unlawfully, in following their desires. This does not include the punishment carried out when the Hudood (limits set by Allaah) are broken, or as discretionary punishment carried out for disciplining.❞

[al-Afsaah `an Ma`aanee al-Sihaah (8/118)]

In the saying of the Messenger of Allaah : It is soon (going to happen)., meaning: it is near. if you survive for a time, meaning: If you live that long. you would certainly see people who would have whips in their hands like the tail of a cow, meaning: with which they will beat people unjustly and unlawfully. They would get up in the morning, meaning: they will leave the house early morning to carry out their duties, under the Ghadhab (wrath) of Allaah, meaning: Allaah’s wrath will be upon them, and they would get into the evening, meaning: and will be going out at the end of the day in carrying out their duties, ❝under the Sakhat (displeasure/anger) of Allaahmeaning: Allaah will be displeased with them. The Sakhat (سخط) is more severe than the Ghadhab (غضب). These are those who will be oppressing the people at all times – some will be harming the people in the day time while others will be harming them in the nights – beating them with their weapons.

Ghadhab can be when the younger one (or lower in rank) is angry at the elder (or higher in rank), or when the elder (or higher in rank) is angry at the younger one (or lower in rank). But Sakhat is only from the higher in rank to the lower in rank.
