Explanation Of The Hadeeth: No One Can Give What Allaah Withholds

📑 Narration:

Warraad, who was the scribe and a freed slave of al-Mugheerah Ibn Shu`bah رضي الله عنه, narrated that Khaleefah Mu`aawiyah Ibn Abee Sufyaan رضي الله عنهما wrote to al-Mugheerah رضي الله عنه – and he was the Ameer assigned by Mu`aawiyah رضي الله عنه over al-Koofah – asking him to write for him a Hadeeth which he had heard from the Prophet . So, al-Mugheerah رضي الله عنه wrote to Mu`aawiyah رضي الله عنه: “Allaah’s Messenger used to say at the end of every obligatory prayer after the Tasleem:

Laa ilaaha illa-l-laahu wahdahoo laa sharika lahoo; lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd, wahuwa `alaa kulli shai’n Qadeer. Allaahumma laa maani`a Limaa a`taita, wa laa mu`tia Limaa mana`ta, wa laa yanfa`u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd.

None has the right to be worshiped except Allaah Alone Who has no partner. His is the Kingdom and all praise, and Omnipotent is He. O Allaah! No one can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and the riches of a fortunate person will be of no avail to him against You, for from You comes all wealth and fortune.

📚 [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (844, 6330, 6615, 7292) and Saheeh Muslim]

📑 Terminologies:

Laa ilaaha illa-l-laahu, meaning: “None has the right to be worshiped except Allaah سبحانه وتعالى.”

wahdahoo laa sharika lahoo, meaning: “He alone deserves worship, and He has no partners or equals.”

His is the Kingdom.❞ , meaning: “ He is the Master and Owner of all that exists. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth.”

and to Him belong all praise, meaning: “Complete and Perfect praise is for Him alone, and He alone deserves all praises.”

wahuwa `alaa kulli shai’n Qadeer, meaning: “He is the Omnipotent, and He does what He intends. There is nothing in the heavens and the earth that can cause failure to Allaah’s plans”

Allaahumma laa maani`a Limaa a`taita, wa laa mu`tia Limaa mana`ta, meaning: “If Allaah intends to give someone something, then there is no one who can withhold it from reaching that person. And if Allaah intends to withhold something from someone, then no one has any might or power to grant it to him against Allaah’s Will.” As Allaah تعالى said:

{Whatever of mercy (i.e., of good), Allaah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise}

📚 [Surah Faatir (35):2]

wa laa yanfa`u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd, “Al-Jadd” means: “One’s share of the worldly life and its riches, it could be either wealth, children, great status, high position, or superior knowledge. If Allaah does not Will, then the riches of a rich person will be of no benefit to him, the fortunes of a fortunate person will be of no benefit to him, and the knowledge of a knowledgeable person will be of no benefit to him. The only thing beneficial for a person is his good deeds. The phrase means: “O Allaah, a person’s share of the worldly life is not a reason for his success. Rather, his success is through your Favors and Mercy!”

Explanation:

This is an amazing Dhikr. It comprises of the declaration of Tawheed, i.e., only Allaah alone has the right to be worshiped, and it negates Shirk or associating any partners with Allaah in His worship, and it is an affirmation that everything belongs to Allaah and that He has absolute ownership over His vast Kingdom, and to Him belongs the perfect praise and the absolute power سبحانه وتعالى. And it is also an affirmation that He has complete control, nothing happens without His Will and nothing escapes His knowledge. What He Wills will happen and what He does not Will will not happen. This Dhikr has accumulated Tawheed al-Ruboobiyah (Lordship), Tawheed al-Uloohiyah (Worship), and Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Sifaat (Names and Attributes).

This Dhikr, it has been legislated to say it on two positions, or at two times. The first time is during the Salaah, after getting up from the Rukoo` (bowing) (as mentioned in another narration in Saheeh Muslim), and the other time is after completing the obligatory Salaah, i.e., after the Tasleem at the end of the five daily prayers.

“Dhal-Jaddi” means: “The one who has received fortune, Rizq (sustenance), wealth, riches, etc.” A person’s wealth, riches, status, ancestry, etc., will not benefit him, irrespective of who he is if he is not a sincere Believer. As Allaah تعالى said:

{And it is not your wealth, nor your children that bring you nearer to Us (i.e., pleases Allaah), but only he (will please Us) who believes (in the Islaamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds; as for such, there will be twofold reward for what they did, and they will reside in the high dwellings (Paradise) in peace and security.}

📚 [Surah Saba (34): 37]

So, do not be deceived by your strength, or wealth, or knowledge, or position, or your followers. If a person is not a sincere Believer, he will lose in this world and the Hereafter, and this is an ultimate loss.

So when a person says: Allaahumma, it is with the meaning of praising Allaah and thanking Him, and acknowledging His favors and blessings, that no one can withhold what You give O Allaah! For all the matters are in Your Hands, and only what you Will will happen. All the good is from You, O Allaah! And evil cannot be ascribed to You!

All the good is in Allaah’s Hands, and this is one of the greatest favors of Allaah upon His slaves. If the keys of goodness were in the hands of people, everyone would have perished because of their jealousy, enmity, miserliness, stinginess, etc.

{Say (O Muhammad ): “If you possessed the treasure of the Mercy of my Lord (wealth, money, provision, etc.), then you would surely hold back (from spending) for fear of (being exhausted), and man is ever miserly!”}

📚 [Surah al-Isra (17): 100]

Imagine, the treasures of al-Rahmaan which never depletes irrespective of how much of it is spent, if Allaah were to give it to the people to manage, they will withhold it because of their stinginess and out of the fear of it getting exhausted and consumed. So, you should thank Allaah that no one can withhold from you if Allaah wants to grant it to you. By Allaah! If all the humans and Jinns were to gather together to prevent a thing from reaching you, which Allaah has decreed for you, they will not be able to do so.

Similarly, be content and acknowledge that if Allaah were to withhold a thing from you, then no one can give it to you after Him. By Allaah! If all the humans and Jinns were to gather together to give you something, which Allaah has not decreed for you, they will never be able to do so.

Then you say: and the riches of a fortunate person will be of no avail to him against You, for from You comes all wealth and fortune., everyone is poor in front of Allaah. If all the rich people were to gather their wealth together, they would still be poor and dependent upon Allaah for their needs, as Allaah تعالى said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنتُمُ الْفُقَرَاءُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ

{O mankind! it is you who stand in need of Allaah, but Allaah is Rich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all praise.}

📚 [Surah Faatir (35): 15]

And Allaah تعالى said:

{and Allaah is the Free of need, while you are the needy (and poor)}

📚 [Surah Muhammad (47): 38]

So here it means: “O rich person, O king, O President, O knowledgeable one, do not be deceived with what you have, and fear Allaah, for nothing will benefit you with Allaah, and nothing will save you from the punishment of Allaah on that Day except for your Imaan and piety.”

And the Prophet said:

And whoever is slowed down by his actions (i.e. bad deeds), will not be hastened forward by his lineage.

📚[Saheeh Muslim]

From this narration, one also learns that the Companions رضي الله عنهم used to advise one another. And they used to ask one another about the Sunnah of the Prophet so that they could follow the Sunnah and implement it in their lives.
