The inhabitants of the Hellfire's plea for help

The inhabitants of the Hellfire will make many requests, and all of them will be denied for them:

1. They will ask for death (a permanent relief from the punishment), but it will be denied for them. [Surah al-Zukhruf (43): 77]

2. They will ask for a day’s relief, that Allaah lightens the punishment for at least one day, but it also be denied. [Surah Ghaafir (40): 49-50]

3. They will request the inhabitants of Jannah to provide them with some food and water from the Jannah, but this will also be denied for them. [Surah al-A`raaf (7): 50]

4. They will ask to be given a second chance to do righteous deeds, but this will also be denied for them. [Surah al-Mu’minoon (23): 107-108]

1. Their request for death:

Allaah تعالى mentioned in the Qur'aan, saying:

﴿وَنَادَوْا يَا مَالِكُ لِيَقْضِ عَلَيْنَا رَبُّكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنَّكُم مَّاكِثُونَ

{And they will cry: “O Maalik (Keeper of Hell)! Let your Lord make an end of us.” He will say: “Verily you shall abide (therein) forever.”}

📚[Surah al-Zukhruf (43): 77]

Al-Haafidh al-Tabaree رحمه الله said:

Allaah تعالى mentioned: The wrongdoers - after Allaah تعالى has made them enter the Hell-Fire, and they receive whatever punishment that was assigned for them therein - they will cry out to Maalik, the keeper of the Hell-Fire, saying: {“O Maalik! Let your Lord make an end of us.”}, meaning: “ask your Lord to give us death, so that through our death we get relieved from the punishment.” It has been said that Maalik will not respond to them at the same time when they made the request. Rather, he will respond to them after a thousand years (from the time of their request), saying to them: {“Verily you shall abide (therein) forever.”}

Ibn al-`Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: (when the denizens of the Hellfire will say): {“O Maalik (Keeper of Hell)! Let your Lord make an end of us.”} He will respond to them after a thousand years, saying: {“Verily you shall abide (therein) forever.”}

Al-Suddee said: Maalik will respond to them after a thousand years of your counting (i.e., the likes a thousand years on this earth).

Al-Hasan reported that Nouf said: Maalik will abandon them for a hundred years of your counting, then he will respond to them saying: {“You shall abide (therein) forever.”}

Qataadah reported that `Abdullaah Ibn `Amr رضي الله عنهما said: Maalik will not respond to them for forty years, and thereafter he will say: {“You shall abide (therein) forever.”}

Abu Ayyoob al-Azadee reported that `Abdullaah Ibn `Amr رضي الله عنهما said: The inhabitants of the Hellfire will call on Maalik for forty years but he will not respond to them, and thereafter he will says: {“You shall abide (therein) forever.”} Then they will call upon their Lord, saying: {“Our Lord! Bring us out of this; if ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be Dhaalimoon: (wrongdoers).”} They will be abandoned for a duration similar (to the existence of this) worldly (life). Then {He (Allaah) will say: “Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”}. After this, the inhabitants of the Hellfire will not utter a word except that they will sigh in high and low tones therein.

2. The inhabitants of the Hell-Fire seeking for relief, even if it were only for a day:

Allaah تعالى said:

{And those in the Fire will say to the keepers (angels) of Hell: “Call upon your Lord to lighten for us the torment for a day!” They will say: “Did there not come to you, your Messengers with (clear) evidences and signs? They will say: “Yes.” They will reply: “Then call (as you like)! And the invocation of the disbelievers is nothing but in error!”}

📚[Surah Ghaafir (40): 49-50]

Al-Haafidh al-Tabaree رحمه الله said:

Allaah تعالى mentioned that the inhabitants of the Hell-Fire will say to its keepers and those who are in charge of it, asking them for help because of the severe punishment that they are in, hoping to find some relief through them, saying: {“Call upon your Lord} on our behalf, {to lighten for us the torment for a day!”}, even if it were for a single day, similar to the day of this worldly life, {from torment} that we are in.

We said: “similar to the day of this worldly life” because the Hereafter is the Day in which there will be no night.

The keepers of the Hellfire will respond, saying: {“Did there not come to you, your Messengers with (clear) evidence and signs}, who established the Tawheed of Allaah (that only Allaah alone deserves to be worshiped and none else), and called to worship Him alone and to believe in Him, and to disassociate yourselves from everything that is worshiped other than Allaah?

{They will say: “Yes.”}, meaning: Yes, the Messengers of Allaah did come to us with the Message.

The keepers will reply to them: {“Then call (as you like)!}, meaning: so, invoke your Lord – the One Who had sent these Messengers - for relief!

{And the invocation of the disbelievers is nothing but in error!”}, meaning: they will supplicate, but it will be in vain, because their supplication will not benefit them, nor will they not be answered. Rather, it would be said to them: [“Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”}

3. The inhabitants of the Hell-Fire will beseech their relatives from the people of Jannah for help.

{And the dwellers of the Fire will call to the dwellers of Paradise: “Pour on us some water or anything that Allaah has provided you with.” They will say: “Indeed, Allaah has forbidden both (water and provision) to the disbelievers.”}

📚[Surah al-A`raaf (7): 50]

Al-Haafidh al-Tabaree رحمه الله said:

Allaah تعالى mentioned that the denizens of the Hellfire - after they have entered the Hell - will call the dwellers of Paradise - after they have occupied their place in the Jannah - for help. O people of Paradise! Pour for us some water and give us anything to eat, from that which Allaah تعالى has provided you with. This was said by al-Suddee.

Ibn Zaid said: (They will ask for) food to eat and water to quench our thirst.

The dwellers of Paradise will respond, saying: {“Indeed, Allaah has forbidden both (water and provision) to the disbelievers.”} meaning: Allaah تعالى has forbidden the food and water (from Jannah) for those who opposed Allaah’s Tawheed (worship), and belied Him and His Messengers in the world.

Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: “A person (from the inhabitants of Hellfire) will call upon his brother or father (who are in Paradise), he will say to them: “I got badly burned, so pour on me some water!” They will be made to respond, saying: “Allaah has forbidden both (water and food of Paradise) to the disbelievers.”

Sa`eed Ibn Jubair said: “A person (from the inhabitants of Hellfire) will call upon his brother (who is in Paradise), he will say: “O my Brother! I got burned, so help me!” He will respond, saying: “Allaah has forbidden both (water and food of Paradise) to the disbelievers.”

4️. The denizens of the Hellfire beseeching for a second chance:

Allaah تعالى mentioned, saying:

﴿رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَالِمُونَ *‏ قَالَ اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ﴾

{“Our Lord! Bring us out of this; if ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be Dhaalimoon: (wrongdoers).” He (Allaah) will say: “Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”}

📚 [Surah al-Mu’minoon (23): 107-108]

Al-Haafidh al-Tabaree رحمه الله said:

Ma`dee Karb reported that Abu al-Dardaa’ said: The inhabitants of the Hellfire will be afflicted with acute hunger, according to the severity of their punishment. They will seek help, and in return they will be provided with Dharee` (ضريع, a poisonous thorny plant) which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger. When they do not benefit from this, they will call out (again) seeking help, so they will be provided with food that chokes (طَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ), when they would eat, it will get caught in their throats. So, they will remember that in the worldly life they used to drink water when it would get difficult to swallow. They will beseech for water to drink, so Hameem (boiling water) will be given to them in metal hooks. When they will bring it close to their faces, it will scald their faces, and when they would drink it, it will cut up their bowels. They will then call Maalik, the keeper of Hellfire, asking him to beseech Allaah to put an end to them (i.e., death). He will abandon them for a thousand years, and then he will respond, saying: “you will abide (therein) forever!” Then they will ask the (other) keepers of the Hellfire to beseech Allaah to lighten their punishment for at least one day. They will respond, saying: “Did not your Messengers come to you with clear signs?” They will affirm, saying” Yes!” It will be said to them: “So, beseech (all you want), but the supplication of the disbelievers will be in vain.” They will then say: “We do not find anyone better for us than our Lord, so they will call upon their Lord, saying: {“Our Lord! Bring us out of this; if ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be Dhaalimoon: (wrongdoers).”} Then Allaah will respond to them, saying: {“Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”}. So with that, they lose hope of any good, and with that they are taken to moaning, despair and severe ruin.

`Amr Ibn Murrah said: Once every seventy years will the denizens of the Hellfire be able see the shin of Maalik, the keeper of Hellfire (i.e., Maalik will only pass by them once in every seventy years). They will say: {“Let your Lord put an end of us.”}, he will respond to them, and they will not see him for another seventy years. They will beseech the (other) keepers of Hellfire, saying: {“Call upon your Lord to lighten for us the torment for a day!”} They will respond, saying: {“Did there not come to you, your Messengers with (clear) evidence and signs?} Then they will say (among themselves): “Beseech your Lord, for there is no one more Merciful than your Lord.” They will say: {“Our Lord! Bring us out of this; if ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be Dhaalimoon: (wrongdoers).”} He (Allaah) will say: {“Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”}. So, with this, they will lose hope of ever receiving any good, and with that, they are taken to moaning, despair, and severe ruin.

Qataadah said: When it will be said to them: {“Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”}, they will lose hope and will never speak a word after that, except for violent inhaling and exhaling. Qataadah further said: The voice of the denizens of Hell will be like the sound of a donkey, the first part of it is exhaling and the last part of it is inhaling.
