(Gifting A Muslim With Explanation Of Fortress Of The Muslim)

By: Shaikh Sa`eed Ibn `Alee Ibn Wahf al-Qahtaanee رحمه الله

The Merits Of Dhikr (Remembering Allaah) (Part 2):

Second: Allaah تعالى said:

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا *‏ وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا﴾

{O you who believe! Remember Allaah with much remembrance. And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon [the early morning (Fajr) and `Asr prayers]} [1]

Explanation:

1. Al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said: “Allaah commands His believing servants to remember their Lord much, Who has bestowed upon them all kinds of blessings and favors, because this will bring them a great reward and a wonderful destiny.” [2]

2. Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما commented on the Aayah: {Remember Allaah with much remembrance.} “Allaah did not enjoin any duty upon His servants without setting known limits and accepting the excuses of those who have a valid excuse - apart from Dhikr, for Allaah has not set any limits for it, and no one has any excuse for not remembering Allaah unless he is oppressed and forced to neglect it. Allaah says:

﴿فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمْ﴾

{Remember Allaah standing, sitting down, and (lying down) on your sides} [3]

By night and by day, on land and on sea, when traveling and when staying home, in richness and in poverty, in sickness and in health, in secret and openly, in all situations and circumstances.” [4]

3. Shaikh al-Sa`dee رحمه الله said: “Here Allaah instructs the Believers to remember Him with much remembrance, such as Tahleel (saying: Laa ilaaha illallaah), Tahmeed (al-hamdulillaah), Tasbeeh (sub-haan Allaah), Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar), and other words that bring one closer to Allaah. The minimum of that is regularly doing the Dhikr for morning and afternoon, following the five obligatory prayers, and on various occasions when there are reasons to do the Dhikr.” [5]

4. Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said: “The Dhikr – as explained earlier – can be done with the tongue, and it can be done with the heart, and also with the limbs. And the saying of Allaah تعالى: {with much remembrance}, without restriction, neither hundred times nor two hundred times, neither a thousand times nor two thousand times, {with much remembrance} (do as much as you can, the more the better). The intelligent person will remember Allaah much and all the time, whereas a negligent person will neglect it.

And Allaah تعالى said: {And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon}, and this is a more specific Dhikr after a general Dhikr – both in action and in time. As for the action, then the Tasbeeh (Glorifying Allaah) is a more specific action after the general one. And as for the time, then this is specific to the early part of the day and the afternoon.

This Aayah is similar to the saying of Allaah تعالى:

﴿وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا

{and exalt [Allaah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting} [6]

From the benefit of these two Aayaat are:

a.
     The First Benefit: The declaration of the importance of Dhikr, because when Allaah تعالى commanded it, He began with the call (O Believers!).

b.
     The Second Benefit: The remembrance is part of Faith (Imaan) in Allaah تعالى and what it entails (meaning: the strength of your Imaan depends upon how much you remember Allaah), because of the saying of Allaah تعالى: {O you who believe! Remember Allaah with much remembrance}

c.
      The Third Benefit: Imaan increases with it – i.e., with Dhikr – because whatever is an essential part of something, then that thing increases with it (i.e., the more a person remembers Allaah, the stronger his Faith).

d.
     The Fourth Benefit: Lack of remembrance means lack of Faith (i.e., there is weakness in a person’s Faith).

e.
     The Fifth Benefit: The legislation to remember Allaah تعالى with much remembrance, because of the saying of Allaah تعالى: {Remember Allaah with much remembrance}

f.
      The Sixth Benefit: The legislation to do Tasbeeh (saying: Sub-haan Allaah), because of the saying of Allaah تعالى: {And glorify His Praises}, but especially in the morning and afternoon, as Allaah تعالى said: {And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon}. No doubt that Tasbeeh is to be done all the time, but more specifically to be done more during the beginning of the day and before its end.

g.
     The Seventh Benefit: To declare Allaah free of all deficiencies and imperfections and everything that is falsely attributed to Him and that does not suit His Majesty (such as attributing to Him a son, or trinity etc.), because of the saying of Allaah تعالى: {And glorify His Praises}. He تعالى has commanded us to so.

h.
     The Eight Benefit: The remembrance of Allaah is a source of life of the heart (and rejuvenates it), because Allaah تعالى commanded it do be done in abundance. If there were no greater benefit in that, He تعالى would not have commanded it to be done in abundance.” [7]
