By: Shaikh Sa`eed Ibn `Alee Ibn Wahf al-Qahtaanee رحمه الله

The Merits Of Dhikr (Remembering Allaah) (Part 9):

5- The Prophet  said:

مَنْ قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ، وَالحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا، لَا أَقُولُ الم حَرْفٌ، وَلَكِنْ أَلِفٌ حَرْفٌ وَلَامٌ حَرْفٌ وَمِيمٌ حَرْفٌ

Whoever recites a letter from Allaah’s Book (the Qur’aan), he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem (الـــم) is (one) letter, but Alif (أ) is a letter, Laam (ل) is a letter and Meem (م) is a letter. [1]

Explanation:

First: The wordings of the Ḥadeeth:

Narrated Muhammad Ibn Ka`b Al-Quradhee: I heard `Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه [2] say: The Messenger of Allaah said: Whoever recites a letter from Allaah’s Book (the Qur’aan), he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem (الـــم) is (one) letter, but Alif (أ) is a letter, Laam (ل) is a letter and Meem (م) is a letter. [3]

Second: Explanation of selected words from the Aḥaadeeth:

1. The saying of the Prophet : Whoever recites a letter, i.e., the (Arabic) alphabetical letters. Al-Mubarakpooree said: “What is meant by letter are the alphabets that are used to make expressive (and meaningful) words.” [4]

2. The saying of the Prophet : from Allaah’s Book, meaning: the Noble Qur’aan. [5]

3. The saying of the Prophet : he will be credited with a good deed, al-Nawawee رحمه الله said: “al-Hasanah (Good) in this world refers to worship and well-being, and in the Hereafter, it is Paradise and forgiveness. It was also said that Good includes both, (the best in) this World and the Hereafter.” [6]

4. The saying of the Prophet : and a good deed gets a tenfold reward, i.e., it will be multiplied ten times, and this is the least number of multiplications, which is also promised in the Book of Allaah:

مَن جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا ۖ وَمَن جَاءَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجْزَىٰ إِلَّا مِثْلَهَا وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ

{Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit, and whoever brings an evil deed shall have only the recompense of the like thereof, and they will not be wronged} [7]

Allaah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. [8] [9]

5. The saying of the Prophet : I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem (الـــم) is a Harf (one letter), the word al-Harf (letter) refers to (Arabic) alphabetical letters, prepositions, meaningful sentence, and the word with different readings. In general it refers to a word. [10]

6. The saying of the Prophet : but Alif (أ) is a letter, Laam (ل) is a letter and Meem (م) is a letter, Shaikh Ahmad Ḥaṭeebah said: “It was a customs of the Arabs to call     al-Kalimah (the word) as Harf (a letter), and they called al-Jumlah (the sentence) and al-Khutbah (the sermon) as Kalimah (a word). [11] So, the reader should not think that the Prophet meant that the word is one letter, and the Prophet clarified this when he said: I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem (الـــم) is a Harf (one letter), meaning: these are three (separate, individual) letters, and not one letter: but Alif (أ) is a letter, Laam (ل) is a letter and Meem (م) is a letter.

This Ḥadeeth explains that for every letter you read from the Qur’aan you will receive the reward of ten good deeds. The Prophet said: he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. So, if a person recites Surah al-Faatiḥah for example, and he recites (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم), then he would amass a lot of good deeds, the multiples of the letters in the word he is reading. Indeed, this is a great favor from Allaah سبحانه وتعالى.” [12]

Third: Lessons learned from this Ḥadeeth:

1. In this, there is manifestation of Allaah’s vast Mercy, that He تعالى multiplies ten times the reward of a good deed, as He تعالى said:

مَن جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا ۖ وَمَن جَاءَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجْزَىٰ إِلَّا مِثْلَهَا وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ

{Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit, and whoever brings an evil deed shall have only the recompense of the like thereof, and they will not be wronged} [13]

2. Reading and reciting the Noble Qur’aan brings great rewards and gifts from Allaah, and it becomes a source of great advantages and benefits. Among these benefits is what the Prophet informed us in this Ḥadeeth - about Allaah’s grace upon whoever recites the Qur’aan - saying: Whoever recites a letter from Allaah’s Book (the Qur’aan), he will be credited with, meaning: Allaah عز وجل will reward him for his recitation of the Qur’aan, that for every letter he recites from it, he will receive a good deed, and a good deed is worth ten times its like, meaning: his reward will be multiplied to ten times its like, and this is a confirmation of the Allaah تعالى saying:

مَن جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا

{Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit} [14]

The Prophet said: I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem (الـــم) is (one) letter, meaning: he does not mean by the letter here every word of the Qur’aan; this is because the letter may be used to mean a word or a meaningful sentence among the Arabs, but Alif (أ) is a letter, Laam (ل) is a letter and Meem (م) is a letter., meaning: what is meant is the alphabets of the word itself, and reciting each letter of the word is a good deed, and this is an emphasis on what the Qur’aan contains of great virtue and reward.

[2]  `Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه, the Imaam, the ocean (of knowledge), the jurist of the nation, Abu `Abdul-Rahmaan al-Hadhlee, al-Makee, al-Muhaajiree, al-Badaree. Ibn Mas`ood was from amongst the foremost to embrace Islaam - when Sa`eed Ibn Zaid and his wife Fatmah bint al-Khattaab had embraced Islaam - and this was a long time before `Umar had embraced Islaam. Ibn Mas`ood was amongst the most knowledgeable of companions. He participated in the battle of Badr, `Uhud, Khandaq; gave the pledge under the tree; migrated twice – the first to Abyssinia and the second to Madeenah; was of those who prayed facing both the Qiblahs; was of good character; and taught abundant knowledge. He learned 70 Surahs directly from the Prophet . `Abdullaah bin Mas`ood was counted as being one of the most intelligent of scholars. Ibn Mas`ood died in Madeenah and was buried in al-Baqee` in the year 32 Hijri.

[5]  `Aqeedah: 10 points regarding the Qur'aan:

   a) The Qur’aan is the speech of Allaah.

   b) It originated from Him as articulated speech without us knowing how (bilaa kayfiyyah).

   c) He sent it down to His Messenger as Revelation (Wahi).

   d) The Believers attest to it as being the truth upon that basis.

   e) The Believers have Yaqeen (certainty) that the Qur’aan is the Speech of Allaah تعالى in truth, both in its wordings and meaning.

   f) It is not something created like the speech of human beings.

  g) So, whoever hears it and claims it to be the speech of a human, then he has committed unbelief (Kufr).

   h) Allaah has condemned and criticized such a person (who claims that the Qur’aan is the speech of a human being) and has threatened him with Hellfire.

   i) So, since Allaah has threatened with Hell those who say: {This is nothing but the word of a human being}; then we know, and we have full certainty that it is the Speech of the Creator of mankind.

   j) And it does not resemble the speech of mankind.

[9]  Allaah عز وجل multiplies the reward for whom He Wills, from ten times to seven hundred times, or even more, and to some He تعالى will give reward without measure. And this has been mentioned in numerous Aayaat and Ahaadeeth.

   a) Rewards are multiplied between ten and seven hundred times:

Allaah’s Messenger said: If a person embraces Islaam sincerely, then Allaah shall forgive all his past sins. After that starts the settlement of accounts, the reward of his good deeds will be ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed and one evil deed will be recorded as it is unless Allaah forgives it. [Saḥeeḥ al-Bukhaaree (41)]

Allaah’s Messenger said: If any one of you improves (follows strictly) his Islaamic religion then his good deeds will be rewarded ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed and a bad deed will be recorded as it is. [Saḥeeḥ al-Bukhaaree (42)]

Allaah’s Messenger said: Allaah says: {If My slave intends to do a bad deed then (O Angels) do not write it unless he does it; if he does it, then write it as it is, but if he refrains from doing it for My Sake, then write it as a good deed (in his account). (On the other hand), if he intends to do a good deed but does not do it, then write a good deed (in his account), and if he does it, then write it for him (in his account) as ten good deeds up to seven hundred times.} [Saḥeeḥ al-Bukhaaree (6491, 7501) and Saḥeeḥ Muslim]

Allaah’s Messenger said: He who intended to do good but did not do it, one good was recorded for him, and he who intended to do good and also did it, ten to seven hundred good deeds were recorded for him. And he who intended evil, but did not commit it, no entry was made against his name, but if he committed that, it was recorded. [Saḥeeḥ Muslim (130)]

   b) Rewards are multiplied seven hundred times or more:

{The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allaah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allaah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower.} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 261]

The Messenger of Allaah said: Whoever spends in the cause of Allaah, it will be recorded for him seven hundredfold. [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (1625) and Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (3186), and graded as “Saḥeeḥ” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

   c) Rewards of Fasting is more than seven hundred times:

The Messenger of Allaah said: Every good deed of the son of Aadam will be multiplied manifold. A good deed will be multiplied ten times up to as many as seven hundred times, or as much as Allaah wills. Allaah says: {Except for fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it.} [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (764), Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (2215), Sunan Ibn Maajah (1638, 3823) and the wording is his, and graded as “Saḥeeḥ” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

   d) Rewards of Sabr (Patience) will be given without measures:

Allaah تعالى says:

إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

{Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning} [Surah al-Zumar (39):10]

[11] Even in the English language sometimes a speech is referred to as a word. For example, when inviting someone to speak to the audience, it is said: “Now a word from so-and-so”. Also, advertising messages are also referred to as a word: “A word from the sponsor”.
