Allaah تعالى says:
﴿أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ﴾
{Be grateful to Me and to your
parents; to Me is the final destination}
📚
[Surah Luqmaan (31): 14]
Allaah has made it obligatory for us to thank Him and thank our
parents. Since there is consensus that thanking one’s parents is done through
constant obedience to them, and that simply praising them is not enough, words
alone are insufficient. It is well known that true gratitude to Allaah requires
more than just words; it must be demonstrated through actions. This is achieved
by obeying Allaah and using His blessings in ways that please Him, rather than
wasting them on wrongdoing.
Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها:
The Prophet ﷺ used to offer prayer
at night (for such a long time) that his feet would become swollen. I said: “O
Allaah's Messenger ﷺ! Why do you do it
since Allaah has forgiven you your faults of the past and those to follow?” He ﷺ said: ❝Shouldn't I love to be a
thankful slave (of Allaah)?❞

👉
Tafseer al-Muḥarrar:
Meaning: We (Allaah) have enjoined upon man to be
grateful to Allaah for His blessings upon you; that is, by worshiping and
obeying Him alone, and by fulfilling His rights. And be grateful to your
parents for enduring the hardship they faced and the effort they exerted for
your sake; so obey them and be kind to them.

👉
Tafseer al-Sa`dee:
{Be grateful to Me} by worshiping Me, fulfilling My rights,
and not using My blessings to disobey Me.
{and to your parents} by showing kindness to them, speaking
gently to them, behaving nicely with them, being humble towards them, honoring
them, respecting them, taking care of them, and avoiding mistreating them in
any way, in word or deed.

Sufyaan Ibn `Uyaynah رحمه الله said:
❝Whoever offers the five daily prayers has thanked Allaah,
and whoever supplicates for his parents at the end of the prayers (before the
Tasleem), then he has thanked them.❞
