Concerning the saying of Allaah
{If You punish them, they
are Your servants, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the
Almighty, the All-Wise.} [Surah al-Maa’idah (5): 118]
Narrated `Abdullaah ibn `Amr ibn al-`Aas رضي الله عنهما: Verily the Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم recited the words of Allaah تبارك وتعالى that Ibraaheem عليه السلام
uttered: {My Lord! Lo! They have led many
of mankind astray: But whoso follow me, he verily is of me} [Surah Ibraaheem
(14): 35], and `Eesaa عليه السلام said: {If You
punish them, lo! they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them--verily You are
the Mighty, the Wise} [Surah al-Maa’idah (5): 118] Then he صلى الله عليه وسلم raised his hands and said: “O Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah, and wept. So Allaah تبارك وتعالى said: “O Gabriel, go
to Muhammad (though your Lord knows it fully well) and ask him: what makes you
weep?” So Gabriel عليه السلام came to him and asked him, and the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم informed him
of what he had said (though Allaah knew it fully well). Upon this Allaah تعالى said: “O Gabriel! Go
to Muhammad and say: Verily We shall please you with regards to your Ummah and shall
not displease you.” [Saheeh
Muslim (306)]
It was narrated that Jasrah bint Dijaajah said: I heard
Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه saying: “The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم stood (in Tahajjud)
reciting a Verse and repeating it until morning came.” That Verse was: {If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive
them, verily, You, only You, are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.}
