Hadeeth: "Importance of al-Qur'aan in protecting the religion"

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Narrated Hudhaifah bin al-Yamaan رضي الله عنه: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Islaam will wear out just as embroidery on a garment wears out, until no one will know what fasting is, what prayer is, what the religious rites (of Hajj) are and what charity is. And the Book of Allaah will be lifted overnight, and not one verse of it will remain on the earth. And there shall remain group of people, old aged men and women saying: ‘We found our fathers upon this statement: Laa ilaaha illallaah (No one is worthy of worship except Allaah), so we say it too.’” Silah (Hudhaifah’s companion) said to him (i.e. Hudhaifah): “What will ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah’ do for them when they don’t know what fasting, prayer, rites and charity are?” Hudhaifah turned away from him, so he repeated his question three times, each time Hudhaifah would turn away from him. Then on the third, he turned to him and said three times: “O Silah! It will save them from the Hellfire!”

[Reported by Ibn Maajah (4049) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jami` (8077) as well as in al-Saheehah (87). Al-Haakim (4/473) said: “It is “Saheeh” as per the condition of (Imaam) Muslim” and al-Dhahabee agreed with him; and Shaikh al-Albaanee said: “it is as they said”. It was also graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh Muqbil in Saheeh al-Musnad (303)]

Shaikh al-Albaanee رحمه الله in Silsilatu al-Saheehah (1/127) said:

And in this Hadeeth there is a grave warning, and it is that a time will come when the traces of Islaam will be wiped out. And that the (entire) Qur’aan will be raised up so that not even a single verse will be left. And this will definitely not happen except after Islaam has dominated the whole earth, and that the Word of Allaah تعالى becomes the uppermost. As has been mentioned in the Qur’aan when Allaah تعالى said:

{He it is Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) with guidance and the religion of truth to make it victorious over all (other) religions} [Surah Tawbah (9):33 / Surah al-Fath (48):28 / Surah al-Saff (61):9]

And as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had explained in the many Ahaadeeth which have already been mentioned in this book (i.e. Silsialtu al-Saheehah).

[Translator’s note: One such Hadeeth is: `Aaishah رضي الله عنها reported: I heard Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم as saying: “The (system) of night and day would not end until the people have taken to the worship of Laat and `Uzzah.” I said: Allaah's Messenger, I think when Allaah has revealed this verse: {He it is Who has sent His Messenger with right guidance, and true religion, so that He may cause it to prevail upon all religions, though the polytheists are averse (to it)} (ix. 33), it implies that (this promise) is going to be fulfilled. Thereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “It would happen as Allaah would like. Then Allaah would send the sweet fragrant air by which everyone who has even a mustard grain of faith in Him would die and those only would survive who would have no goodness in them. And they would revert to the religion of their forefathers.” [Saheeh Muslim (6945)]]

And the Glorious Qur’aan will not be raised up in the last generation except in preparation for the coming of the Hour which will be established upon the most evil generation which will not know anything at all about Islaam, not even Tawheed.

And in this Hadeeth, there is reference about the superiority of the Qur’aan: that its presence amongst the Muslim is the reason for the survival of their Deen and the firmness of its foundation, and that is not possible except by learning it, pondering over it, and understanding its meaning. And that is why Allaah تبارك وتعالى pledged to protect it, until He تعالى orders for it to be raised up.

And nothing can be more further from the truth than that some of the Muqallid (fanatic blind followers) believe and understand that the Deen is protected because of the four Madhaahib, and that there is no Harm upon the Muslims even if they lose the Qur’aan should such thing ever happen. This is what was told to me by one of the big Muftee of a non-`Arab origin and he was fluent in speaking classical `Arabic. This happened when we were discussing the subject revolving around Ijtihaad (decision making based on al-Qur’aan and Sunnah) and Taqleed (blind following).

He said: “What many of the people repeat is that: the door of Ijtihaad was closed after the fourth generation!”

I (al-Albaanee) said to him: “So what should we do with the many new incidents/events which take place today, and which requires one to know the ruling of Allaah about them?”

He said: “As for these new events, irrespective of their being many, you will find the answers (rulings) about it in the books of our scholars dealing with the exact situation or something similar to it.”

I said: “You have accepted that the door of Ijtihaad is still remains open.”

He said: “And how is that?”

I said: “It is because you have accepted that the answer (ruling) can be based on something similar to it, not necessarily to be exact to it, and the situation is (as you say). So it is necessary that one should look at the events taking place in our time, and based on the ruling to a similar situation (which has already preceded), there is no alternative but to use Qiyaas (analogy), which is the fourth type of evidence from the evidences of the Shari`ah. And this is the meaning of Ijtihaad for the one who is capable. So how can they say that its door is closed?!”

And this reminds me of another conversation between myself and one of the Muftee from northern Syria. I asked him: “Is the praying on an airplane correct?”

He said: “Yes.”

I said: “Do you say this blindly following someone or from your own ijtihaad?”

He said: “What do you mean?”

I said: “It is not hidden from the foundations (of your Madhhab) about giving a fatwa that it is not permissible to give a fatwa based on Ijtihaad, rather one has to rely on the text from (the statements of) the Imaam, so is there any text (from the Imaam) which makes it permissible to pray in an airplane?”

He said: “No.”

I said: “So how come you went against the fundamentals (of your madhhab) and you gave a fatwa without textual evidence (from the Imaam)?”

He said: “Through Qiyaas (analogy).”

I said: “What was the basis of your Qiyaas?”

He said: “The ruling of the prayer on a ship.”

I said: “This is good! But you have opposed the main (Usool of fiqh) as well as its branches. As for the main (Usool), then there has never preceded a ruling for this. As for its branches, then al-Rifaa`ee (d. 624H) mentioned in his explanation that if a person prays on a swing which is neither suspended from a ceiling nor supported by the earth, then his prayer is invalid.”

He said: “I do not know about this (ruling).”

I said: “You should then go back (to the book of) al-Rifaa`ee to know that {over all those endowed with knowledge is the All-Knowing}. So unless you accept that you are from the people of Qiyaas and Ijtihaad - and that it allowed for you to do that, even if it is within the Madhhab only - the ruling of praying on an airplane will be invalid because a ruling about it has already preceded, as what al-Rifaa`ee had imagined during his days. As for us, we see that the prayer on an airplane is valid without a doubt. And if the reason for allowing praying on a ship is because it is supported by water between it and the earth, then an airplane is also supported by air between it and the earth – and this is what appeared to you at first when you were researching (about this issue) independently. So, when you came to know about that ruling in the Madhhab, you repelled the saying (that the door of Ijtihaad is closed), and made the conclusion (independently) based on your research!”

Let me go back to conclude the conversation with that non-`Arab Muftee.

I said to him: “and if the matter is as you say: that the Muslims are not in the need of new rulings, because the Muftee can find the answer to an issue based on previous exact ruling or something similar to it; so will there be any harm, if we assume, that the Qur’aan has been raised up?”

He said: “This has not happened.”

I said: “I say, if we assume.”

He said: “No harm will be done even if we assume that such thing happens!”

I said: “Then what is the value of the favor (and assurance) of Allaah عز وجل to His slaves that the Qur’aan will be protected when He تعالى said: {Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’aan) and surely We will guard it (from corruption)} [Surah al-Hijr (15):9], if this protection was unnecessary after the coming of the Imaams?!”

And the reality is that this answer, which we received from the Muftee through conversing with him, is the answer of every Muqallid on the face of the earth. The only difference is that some of them do not dare to speak out loudly, even though their hearts have accepted that.”

We seek Allaah’s refuge from such betrayal.

Think deeply O dear reader of the amount of damage (done) which we complain of (to Allaah). They have made the Qur’aan as if it is already raised (metaphorically by preventing others from taking guidance from it), whereas, all praise be to Allaah alone, it is still among us. So, how will they behave, when it is really raised up in a single night, and not a single verse will be left on the earth?! O Allaah guide us!”
