Etiquette: Revenge

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

A gentle heart is the one which forgives (the mistakes), overlooks (the faults), and does not seek revenge for personal causes.

Allaah تعالى mentions that one of the attributes of a Believer is:

{and when they are angry, they forgive} [Surah al-Shooraa (42): 37]

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: “Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم never beat anyone with his hand neither a woman nor a servant, but only in the case when he had been fighting in the cause of Allaah and he never took revenge for anything unless the things made inviolable by Allaah were made violable; he then took revenge for Allaah تبارك وتعالى.” [Saheeh Muslim (5756)]

Imaam Ibn Katheer رحمه الله commented about the verse:
{and when they are angry, they forgive}: means, their nature dictates that they should forgive people and be tolerant. Vengeance is not in their nature. It was reported in the Saheeh that the Messenger of Allaah never took revenge for his own sake, only when the sacred Laws of Allaah were violated.

And Ibn Abee Haatim reported from his father who reported from Ibn Abu `Umar, who reported from Sufyaan, from Zaaidah, from Mansoor on the authority of Ibraheem that he said: “The Believers disliked humiliating (others); and when they had the upper hand, they would forgive.”
--end of quote.

Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: “Whenever Allaah’s Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم was given the choice of one of two matters, he would choose the easier of the two, as long as it was not sinful to do so, but if it was sinful to do so, he would not approach it. Allaah’s Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم never took revenge (over anybody) for his own sake but (he did) only when Allaah’s legal bindings were outraged in which case he would take revenge for Allaah’s sake.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3318, 5731, 6421) and Saheeh Muslim (5752)]
