Muhammad ibn al-Hussain said: I heard Muhammad al-Koofee
saying:
“Silence gathers two
characteristics for a person:
a) Safety in his Deen*
b) and getting to know the
nature of his friend**.”
[al-Faqeeh wal-Mutafaqqih of al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadee (2/63)]
* The more a person speaks, the more the chances of
making errors.
** When a person is silent and his friend is speaking, he has more opportunities of learning about his friend and see how he behaves and hear what he speaks (analyzing how much knowledge he has). It is also said that if you want to know the nature of your friend, then go on a journey/trip with him for a few days.
And Allaah knows best.
