Shaikh Ibn Baaz: Celebrating the Prophet’s birthday is a Bid`ah

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said:

Celebrating the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم birthday is a Bid`ah (innovation) and a means leading towards Shirk. If it were legislated, then the Salaf al-Saalih (the Pious Predecessors – the Companions and their followers) would have done that. As for the Hadeeth, where he صلى الله عليه وسلم was asked about Monday, he صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

ذَاكَ يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيهِ، وَيَوْمٌ بُعِثْتُ - أَوْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيَّ فِيهِ

“It was the day on which I was born, on which I was commissioned with Prophethood or revelation was sent to me” [1]

This is to encourage fasting. [2]

[1] The Complete Hadeeth is about Fasting:

Abu Qataadah al-Ansaaree رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم was asked about his fasting. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم felt annoyed. Thereupon `Umar رضي الله عنه said: ‘We are pleased with Allaah as the Lord, with Islaam as our Code of Life, with Muhammad as the Messenger and with our pledge (to you for willing and cheerful submission) as a (sacred) commitment.’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم was then asked about perpetual fasting, whereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “He neither fasted nor did he break it, or he did not fast and he did not break it” (i.e. the person won’t get the reward for it). He صلى الله عليه وسلم was then asked about fasting for two days and breaking one day. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “And who has strength enough to do it?” He was asked about fasting for a day and breaking for two days, whereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “May Allaah bestow upon us strength to do it.” He صلى الله عليه وسلم was then asked about fasting for a day and breaking on the other, whereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “That is the fasting of my brother Dawood عليه السلام.” He صلى الله عليه وسلم was then asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “It was the day on which I was born, on which I was commissioned with Prophethood or revelation was sent to me.” (He صلى الله عليه وسلم further) said: “Three days’ fasting every month and of the whole of Ramadhaan every year is a perpetual fast” (and this type of fasting is recommended). He صلى الله عليه وسلم was asked about fasting on the day of `Arafah (9th of DhuI-Hijjah), whereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year.” He was asked about fasting on the day of `Aashoora (10th of Muharram), whereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “It expiates the sins of the preceding year.” [Saheeh Muslim (2603)]

Another Hadeeth:

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, so I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (747) and graded as “Saheeh li ghairihee” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

[2] Some of the people, to prove their Bid`ah, take only from the statement: “It was the day on which I was born” and leave off the rest of the Hadeeth and its context.

The Ahl al-Bid`ah wal-Dhalaalah (people of innovation and misguidance) have a unique way of working things out. They first invent a matter in religion and then look for evidences to support it; and in the process, they twist these evidences to suit their needs.
