An expert’s view on the evils of the Khawaarij:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Wahab Ibn Munabbih [1] رحمه الله said:

I reached (an era) of early Islaam.

- By Allaah! The Khawaarij never had a group, except that Allaah تعالى divided them because of the evil that they were upon.

- There was none from them who had made known his opinion, except that Allaah تعالى struck his neck.

- The Ummah (as a whole) never gathered together (or agreed) with even a single person from the Khawaarij.

- Had Allaah تعالى permitted the Khawaarij (to rule) according to their ways:
 * Corruption (bloodshed) would have spread across the land.
 * The pathways would have been cut off.
 * Pilgrimage (Hajj) towards the House of Allaah would have had stopped.
 * The laws of the Days of Ignorance (law of the jungle) would have prevailed.
 * So that even the people would return back to seeking help (from the Jinns) at the mountain top (i.e. return back to worshiping idols) as used to happen in the Days of Ignorance.

- If more than 10 or 20 men gathered together, there would not be a man from them, except that he would call people towards him to make him the Khaleefah.

- If each one of them had more 10,000 followers, they would fight among themselves, and would make Takfeer of each other.

- So that a man would not wake up, except that he would fear for his own, his religion, his life, his family and wealth not knowing with whom to align.

[Taareekh Damishq of Ibn `Asaakir (63/383)]

[1] The Imaam, the `Allaamah, Wahab bin Munabbih رحمه الله was a Taabi`ee.

Among the Sahaabah from whom he narrated are: Ibn `Abbaas, Abu Hurairah, Abu Sa`eed, al-Nou`maan bin Basheer, Jaabir bin `Abdullaah, and Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهم اجمعين.

One of the saying for which he is widely renowned for:

Wahab bin Munabbih was asked: “Isn't the saying: 'Laa ilaaha illallaah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah)', the key of Paradise?” He replied in the affirmative, and said: “There is no key without teeth, and if you have the key which has teeth, it will open it (the Paradise) for you, and if it is without teeth, then it will not open it for you.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2/71)]
