The
following is a collection of some of the Ahaadeeth which has the phrase:
ليس مني: He is not from me (he has nothing to do with me).
ليس منا: He is not from us (he has nothing to do with us).
أنا بريء: I am free of him.
A) The definition of
these phrases:
Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
“The Kabaair (Major) sins are: Every sin for which Allaah تعالى has ordained a
specific punishment. Every sin for which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has
cursed its doer is a Major sin. Every sin for which there is a prescribed
punishment - example adultery; or there is a dire threat in the Hereafter –
example the consuming of Ribaa (usury); or there is negation of one’s Imaan –
example: “None of you (truly) believes till he loves for his brother that
which he loves for himself”; or in which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has freed
himself from the doer – example: “Whoever deceives us is not
from of us”; or whatever is similar to it are considered as Major sins.”

Question: There are Ahaadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم in which he says: “he is not one of us (who did such and such)”.
So does this phrase: “not from us”, take one outside the fold of Islaam? If it
does, then will its doer abide in the Hell forever? And Allaah’s refuge is
sought. And how can we combine between these Ahaadeeth and the Ahaadeeth regarding
the intercession: “(Allaah تعالى will say):
{Remove from the Fire whoever says: ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah’}”, and “{Remove from the Fire
who has Faith equal to the weight of the grain of mustard seed}”?
Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله: These Ahaadeeth with the
phrase: “he is not from us”, most of the times is used as:
1) a threat, 2) a
warning, 3) for discouraging away from that sin. The sin does
not expel its doer outside the fold of Islaam, as long as he does not deem it
to be Halaal (lawful); but therein is a clear warning and intimidation.
Example: the saying of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the authentic
Hadeeth:
“He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways
and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us.”
Meaning: a person who does this at the time of affliction. This
is only as a threat and this act is not Kufr (in itself).
And his صلى الله عليه وسلم saying:
“None of you have (true) Faith, till he wishes for your brother
what he likes for himself.”
or:
“He has no (true) Faith, the one whose neighbor does not feel
safe from his evil.”
All these (Ahaadeeth) are to serve as a threat and for
discouraging people away from having bad and blameworthy manners and
encouraging them towards kindness and good manners.
The same goes for Ahaadeeth with similar phrases. A Believer is
cautious and stays away from that which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم warned
against. These sins diminish and weaken the Imaan (of a person). Similar to
what the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a
believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is
not a believer at the time of committing theft and a drinker of alcoholic drink
is not a believer at the time of drinking. Yet, (the gate of) repentance is
open thereafter.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim]
Meaning: such a person does not have complete Imaan. It does not
mean that the person has become a Kaafir. The thief does not become a Kaafir
nor does a fornicator become a Kaafir as long as he does not regard it as
Halaal (lawful). If he knew that it is a sin but he engaged in it because he
followed his desires and Shaitaan, then he is considered as a sinner, having
weak Imaan, liable for punishment and entering the Fire; the same is for the
one who drinks intoxicants. But if he deems it be lawful, for example he says: “having
illegal sexual intercourse is Halaal”, then he has done Major Kufr (which
expels him outside the fold of Islaam); similarly the one who says: “drinking
intoxicants is Halaal”, has done Major Kufr.
Similarly, if a thief says that it is lawful to steal from
people has done Major Kufr. Also, if one says that Ribaa (usury) is Halaal has
done Major Kufr. But if he engages in Ribaa (usurious transactions) but does
not deems it as lawful, then he is a sinner who has done a Major sin, having a
weak Imaan, and it diminishes his Imaan and he has exposed himself to threats
and punishment of the Fire. Similarly, the one who disobeys the parents and
cuts ties of kinship has exposed himself to treats and punishment and entering
the Fire. So he (the person who engages in such sins) will be under the Will of
Allaah عز وجل (i.e. if
Allaah Wills, He تعالى would punish him or forgive him).
In the end, the aim here is that these phrases: “he
is not one of us”, “none of you (truly) believe…”,
do not mean that it is Kufr Akbar (Major Kufr), but they are only as a means
for threat and warning (about the severity of the sin). As for knowing what are
regarded as Major Kufr, there are other Ahaadeeth.

Imaam al-Baghawee رحمه الله said:
“The saying of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: “…he
is not from me”, he صلى الله عليه وسلم did not mean that one
is expelled from the Deen of Islaam. Rather, he meant that the one who is doing
it has omitted his صلى الله عليه وسلم teachings; meaning: this is not from our
manners and our actions; or, he is not upon my Sunnah and my way in dealing
with his brothers. Allaah تعالى mentioned that Ibraaheem عليه السلام had said:
فَمَن تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي
{So
whoever follows me - then he is of me} [Surah Ibraaheem (14): 36]”

Shaikh `Abdul Rahmaan Ibn Qaasim رحمه الله said:
“(The signs of the Major sins) are: Every sin which has a
prescribed Hadd (legal punishment) in this world, or which follows with a Wa`eed
(threat) in the Hereafter, or about which Nafi (negation) of one’s Imaan is
mentioned, or (which has been) Lu`in (La`an)
(cursed), or (which causes) Ghadhab (wrath), or (which leads to) `Adhaab
(punishment), or that from which the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم freed
himself, or he said: “he is not from us”.”

Abu Dawood and Tirmidhee reported in their respective Sunans that
Yahya said: “Sufyaan disapproved of the interpretation of the phrase “has
nothing to do with us” as “not like us”.”

So
from the aforementioned statements of the scholars it is to be understood that
these phrases: “he is not from me” or
“he is not one of us” are for disparaging the act; i.e. the one who is
doing it is not following the Prophet’s Sunnah (tradition) and that he lacks
the characteristics which a Believer should have – example: being truthful with
others and not deceiving them. In most cases these Ahaadeeth do not mean that a
person has committed Kufr and has gone outside the fold of Islaam. They only
point to the gravity of the sin, i.e. it is a Major sin and one should be
careful of not committing it.

B) The Ahaadeeth:
1) The one who opposes or does not follow the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم after knowing
it:
Narrated
Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه: A group of three men came to the houses
of the wives of the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم asking how the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم worshipped (Allaah), and when they were informed about that,
they considered their worship insufficient and said: Where are we from the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم as his past and future
sins have been forgiven. Then one of them said: “I will offer the prayer
throughout the night forever.” The other said: “I will fast throughout the year
and will not break my fast.” The third said: “I will keep away from the women
and will not marry forever.” Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم came to them and said: “Are you the same people who said such-and-such? By Allaah!
I am more submissive to Allaah and more afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and
break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women. So, he who does not follow my
Sunnah (tradition) in religion is not from me (not one of my followers).”

2) The one who does not trim the mustache:
Zaid
bin Al-Arqam said رضي الله عنه: I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: “Whoever
does not trim his mustache then he is not one of us.” [Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (13, 5047) and Sunan
al-Tirmidhee (2761) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
[Note: Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما said: the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Let the beards grow
and trim the moustaches.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (5892) and Saheeh Muslim (500)]]

3) The one who resembles the Kuffaar:
Narrated
`Amr bin Shu`aib from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of
Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “He is not one of us who resembles other than us; do not resemble the Jews or the Christians. For indeed greeting of the
Jews is pointing the finger, and the greeting of the Christians is waving with
the hand.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhee
(2695) and graded as “Hasan li ghairihee” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Saheehah
(2194)]
[Note: Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما said: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever
imitates a people, he is one of them.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4031) and
graded as “Hasan Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]]

4) The one who lives amongst the Kuffaar:
Narrated
Jareer ibn `Abdullaah رضي الله عنه: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم sent an expedition to Khath`am. Some
people sought protection by having recourse to prostration, and were hastily
killed. When the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم heard that, he ordered half the blood-money to be paid for
them, saying: “I am free of the responsible for
any Muslim who stays among polytheists.” They asked: Why, Messenger
of Allaah? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Their fires should not be visible to one another.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (2645) and Sunan al-Tirmidhee
(1604), Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (4780) and graded as “Saheeh” (without the command to
pay half the blood money) by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

5) The one who wails, slaps the
cheeks, and tears the clothes at the time of a calamity:
Narrated
`Abdullaah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “He
who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of
the Days of Ignorance is not one of us.”
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1294, 1297, 1298, 3519) and Saheeh Muslim (184)]
It
is narrated on the authority of Abu Burda Ibn Abu Musa that Abu Musa رضي الله عنه was afflicted
with grave pain and he became unconscious and his head was in the lap of a lady
of his household (i.e. one of his wives). (When he became unconscious) one of
the women of his household wailed. (At that time) he (Abu Musa) was unable
(because of weakness) to say anything to her. But when he recovered he said: “I am innocent of those, of whom Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم was
innocent. Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم declared himself free
of a woman who cries aloud (or slaps her face) who shaves her head and who tear
off her clothes (on the falling of a calamity).” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (1296) and Saheeh Muslim (186)]
When
Abu Musa was close to death (and fell unconscious), his wife started to scream.
When he regained consciousness, he said: “Did I
not tell you that I am free from what the Messenger of Allaah is free?” They said: He used to narrate that the Messenger
of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “I am free from the one who shaves his head, rends his
garments or raises his voice in lamentation.” [Saheeh Muslim (187)]
[Note: There is a difference between feeling sad and crying and between
wailing.
Narrated
Anas bin Maalik رضي الله عنه: We went with Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the
husband of the wet-nurse of Ibraaheem (the son of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم). Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم took Ibraaheem and kissed him and smelled
him and later we entered Abu Saif’s house and at that time Ibraaheem was in his
last breaths, and the eyes of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم started shedding tears. `Abdul Rahmaan bin
`Auf said: O Allaah’s Apostle, even you are weeping! He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “O
Ibn `Auf, this is mercy.” Then he wept more and said: “The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved,
and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibraaheem! Indeed we are
grieved by your separation.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (1303) and Saheeh Muslim (5733)]
Narrated
Anas رضي الله عنه: We were in
the funeral procession of the daughter of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and
Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم was sitting near the grave and I saw his
eyes full of tears. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1285, 1342)]
Narrated
Usama bin Zaid رضي الله عنه:
We
were with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم when suddenly there
came to him a messenger from one of his daughters who asked him to come and see
her son who was dying. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said (to the messenger): “Go back
and tell her that whatever Allaah takes is His, and whatever He gives is His,
and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world). So order her
to be patient and hope for Allaah’s reward.”
But she sent the messenger to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم again, swearing that he should come to
her. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم got up, and so
did Sa`d bin `Ubaadah and Mu`aadh bin Jabal (and went to her). When the child
was brought to the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم his breath was disturbed in his chest as if it were in a water
skin. On that the eyes of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم became flooded with tears, whereupon Sa`d said to him: O Allaah's
Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم! What is this? The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “This is mercy which Allaah has put in the heart of His
slaves, and Allaah bestows His mercy only on those of His slaves who are
merciful (to others).” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (1284, 5655, 6655, 7377) and Saheeh Muslim (2008)]]

6) The one who does not beautifies his recitation of the Qur’aan:
Abu
Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever
does not recite Qur’an in a nice voice is not from us.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (7527), Sunan Abu Dawood (1469, 1470, 1471) from the Sa`d رضي الله عنه. (In Sunan Abu Dawood) One of the narrators
(`Abdul Jabbaar) asked Abu Mulaikah (another narrator in the chain): What do
you think if a person does not have pleasant voice? He said: “He should recite with pleasant voice as much as
possible.”]

7) The one who fights against the believers and attacks the Ummah of
Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم:
Narrated
`Abdullaah Ibn `Umar and Abu Musa رضي الله عنهم: The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever takes up arms
against us, is not from us.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (6874, 7070, 7071) and Saheeh Muslim (98, 99, 100, 101). In one of
the narration of Saheeh Muslim the wordings are: “He
who draws the sword against us is not from us.”]
Abd
Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “He
who rebels against obedience to the ruler, and separated himself from the main
body of the Muslims - if he died in that state – he would die the death of one
belonging to the days of Jaahiliyyah (the days of ignorance). One who fights
under the banner of a people who are blind (to the cause for which they are fighting,
i.e. do not know whether their cause is just or otherwise), who gets flared up
with family pride, calls (people) to fight for their family honor, and supports
his kith and kin (i.e. fights not for the cause of Allaah but for the sake of
this family or tribe) - if he is killed (in this fight), he dies as one
belonging to the days of Jaahiliyyah. Whoso attacks my Ummah (indiscriminately)
killing the righteous and the wicked of them, sparing not (even) those staunch
in faith and fulfilling not his promise made with those who have been given a
pledge of security - he has nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with
him.” [Saheeh Muslim (4555, 4557)
and Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (4114)]
[Note: This is what the Khawaarij do. They revolt against the rulers,
they have no certain goals, and they label the Muslims as Kaafir and kill them
indiscriminately.]

8) The one who cheats and deceives the people:
Abu
Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that
the Messenger of Allaah صلى
الله عليه وسلم happened to pass by a heap of food (grain). He thrust his
fingers in that (heap) and he felt the wetness. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said to the owner of that heap of eatables
(corn): “What is this?” He replied: O Messenger of Allaah, these got
drenched by rainfall. He صلى
الله عليه وسلم remarked: “Why did you not place
this (the drenched part of the heap) over other eatables so that the people
could see it? He who deceives is not of me (is not my follower).”
[Saheeh Muslim (183)]

9) The one who unjustly takes the wealth of others:
It
was narrated from Jaabir bin `Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما that
the Messenger of Allaah صلى
الله عليه وسلم said:
“Whoever plunders (and takes property by force)
is not one of us.” [Sunan Ibn
Maajah (3935, 3937), Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (3335, 3590), Sunan Abu Dawood (4391)
and Sunan al-Tirmidhee (1123, 1601) and graded as “Saheeh”
by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

10) The one who wrongly claims to belong to a family or claims to be
the owner of something:
Narrated
Abu Dhar رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If someone knowingly claims to be the son of any other
(man) other than his real father, he has committed Kufr, and if someone claims
to belong to some folk to whom he does not belong [and whoever claims something
that does not belong to him, is not from us], let such a person take his place
in the (Hell) Fire [and he who labeled anyone with unbelief (i.e. called him a
Kaafir) or called him the enemy of Allaah, while he (the other person) was in
fact not so, then it rebounded on the one who said it.]” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3508) and Saheeh Muslim
(118) and the wordings within the brackets are his]

11) The one who learned archery and then gave it up:
`Uqbah
Ibn `Aamer رضي الله عنه said: the
Prophet said: “Who learnt archery and then gave
it up is not from us.” Or he said: “he
has disobeyed (me).” [Saheeh
Muslim (4714)]
`Uqbah
Ibn `Aamer رضي الله عنه said: I heard
the Messenger of Allaah صلى
الله عليه وسلم say: “Lands shall be thrown open
for you (i.e. you will conquer lands) and Allaah will suffice you (against your
enemies), but none of you should give up playing with his arrows.”
[Saheeh Muslim (4712)]

12) The one who shoots in the dark:
Abu
Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Anyone who shoots at night is not one of us.” [Musnad
of Imaam Ahmad (8270), al-Adab al-Mufrad (1279) and graded as “Saheeh li
Ghairihee” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. Al-Tabaraanee in Mu`jam al-Kabeer (11553) also
reported this from Ibn `Abbaas and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in
al-Saheehah (2339)]

13) The one who incites the woman against her husband:
Narrated
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Anyone
who incites a woman against her husband or a slave against his master is not
one of us.” [Sunan Abu Dawood
(2175, 5170) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

14) The one who fears the revenge of a snake:
Narrated
`Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Kill all the snakes, and he who fears their revenge does
not belong to me.” [Sunan Abu
Dawood (5248, 5249, 5250) and Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (3193) and graded as “Saheeh”
by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Narrated
Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما: That he heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم delivering a
sermon on the pulpit saying: “Kill snakes and
kill Dhu-at- Tufyatain (i.e. a snake with two white lines on its back) and albatross
(i.e. a snake with short or mutilated tail) for they destroy the sight of one’s
eyes and bring about abortion. [And whoever leaves them (and does not kill
them) is not one of us.]” (`Abdullaah
bin `Umar further added): Once while I was chasing a snake in order, to kill
it, Abu Lubaba called me saying: “Don’t kill it,” I said. “Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered us to kill snakes.” He said: “But
later on he صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibited the
killing of snakes living in the houses.” (Az-Zuhri said. “Such snakes are
called Al-Awamir.”) [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3297, 3298), Saheeh Muslim (5550, 5551),
Sunan Abu Dawood (5252, 5253). The words within the brackets are from Musnad of
Imaam Ahmad from `Aaishah رضي
الله عنها (24010, 24219, 25241)]]
[Note: Abu Lubaba al-Ansaari رضي الله عنه said:
“Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade the killing of snakes found in the houses
except the short-tailed snakes and those having streaks upon them, for both of
them affect the eyesight and affect that which is in the wombs of (pregnant)
women.” [Saheeh
Muslim (5550, 5551) and Sunan Abu Dawood (5253)]
Abu
Sa`eed al-Khudree رضي الله عنه reported Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم having said: “There is a group of Jinn in Madeenah who accepted
Islaam, so he who would see anything from these occupants (i.e. the snakes
which are found inside the houses), he should warn him three times; and if he
appears after that, he should kill him for he is a Shaitaan.” [Saheeh Muslim (5557, 5558, 5559)]]

15) The one who does not show mercy to the children and respect to
the elders:
`Abdullaah
Ibn `Amr رضي الله عنهما said that the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Anyone who does not show mercy to our young ones (the
children) nor acknowledge the right of our elders is not one of us.”
[Sunan Abu Dawood (4943), Sunan al-Tirmidhee (1920) and graded as “Saheeh” by
Shaikh al-Albaanee. In another narration of al-Tirmidhee (1919), the wordings
are: “and does not respect our elders.”]

16) The one who swears by other than Allaah:
Narrated
Buraydah ibn al-Hasib رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “He
who swears by Amaanah (faithfulness) is not one of us.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (3253) and graded as “Saheeh”
by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
[Note: Narrated Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما: that he found `Umar bin Al-Khattaab in a group of people and
he was swearing by his father. So Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم called them
saying: “Verily! Allaah forbids you to swear by
your fathers. If one has to take an oath, he should swear by Allaah or
otherwise keep quiet.” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim]
Narrated
`Abdul Rahmaan bin Samurah رضي
الله عنه: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Do not swear by idols, or
by your fathers.” [Saheeh Muslim]
Narrated
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever
swears saying in his oath: ‘By Al-Laat and by Al`Uzza’ (names of two idols worshipped
by the pagans), should say: ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah' (None has the right to be
worshipped but Allaah).” [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim]
The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever swears by something other than Allaah has
committed an act of Kufr or Shirk.” [Sunan
al-Tirmidhee (1535) and Sunan Abu Dawood (3251); graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh
al-Albaanee]]

17) The one who denies the Qadr (Divine Decree):
`Ubaadah
Ibn al-Saamit رضي الله عنه said to his
son: Son! You will not get the taste of the reality of Imaan (Faith) until you
know that what has come to you could not miss you, and that what has missed you
could not come to you. (In the narration of al-Tirmidhee it is: O my son! Have
Taqwa of Allaah, and know that you will never have Taqwa of Allaah until you
believe in Allaah, and you believe in al-Qadr – all of it – its good and its
bad.) I heard the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم )
say: “The first thing Allaah created was the
pen. He said to it: Write. It asked: What should I write, my Lord? He said:
Write what was decreed about everything till the Last Hour comes.”
Son! I heard the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم )
say: “He who dies on something other than this
does not belong to me.” [Sunan
Abu Dawood (4700) and the wordings are his, Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2155, 3319) and
graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

18) The one who goes to fortunetellers and magicians:
The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “He is not from us who seeks omens (from birds) or for
whom it is done; or who performs fortunetelling (and palmistry) or for whom it
is done; or who does magic or for whom it is done.” [al-Saheehah (2195) and graded as “Saheeh li
ghairihee” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Abu
Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: The
Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he
says, or has intercourse with a menstruating woman, or with a woman in her
rear, he has nothing to do with what has been revealed to Muhammad.” [Sunan
Abu Dawood (3904) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. In Sunan Ibn
Maajah (639), Sunan al-Tirmidhee (135), the wordings are: “he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to
Muhammad.”]
[Note: The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said:
“He who visits a diviner (`Arraaf) and asks him
about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.” [Saheeh Muslim (5540)]]
