The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَ القُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ
حَنَاجِرَهُمْ
“…there will be some people
who would recite the Qur’aan but the Qur’aan will not reach beyond their
throats (i.e. they will recite like parrots and will not understand it nor act
on it).”
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3344, 3610, 5058, 6931, 6934,
7432, 7562) and Saheeh Muslim (1791, 2316, 2318, 2323, 2328, 2335, 2336)]
The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
قَوْمٌ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ رَطْبًا، لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ
“…some people will come who
will recite the Qur’aan - continuously and elegantly - but it will not exceed
their throats.”
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4351) and Saheeh Muslim (2319,
2320)]
After mentioning the Hadeeth on the description of the Khawaarij,
Ibn Hubairah (d. 560H)* commented in his
book saying:
From this Hadeeth one also learns that the recitation of the
Qur’aan - while having a deviant `Aqeedah - does not purify nor protects its
reciter from the wrath of Allaah عز وجل.
[الأفصاح
عن معاني الصحاح (1/262)]
*[Note: Imaam
al-Dhahabee said about Ibn Hubairah: He is Abu Mudhaffar, Yahyaa Ibn Muhammad
Ibn Hubairah al-Shaibaanee – the Imaam, the Scholar, the Just (fair-minded),
the supporter of the Deen, and the author of (many) books. [Siyar A`laam
al-Nubalaa’ (20/426)
Ibn Hubairah was also one of the teachers of Ibn
al-Jawzee.]

The
Jews and the Christians did not benefit from the Torah and the Injeel:
Abu al-Dardaa’ رضي الله عنه narrated: We were with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم when he turned his
sight towards the heaven and said: “This is the
time when knowledge is being withdrawn from the people till they will have no
control over anything of it.” So, Ziyaad ibn Labeed al-Ansari رضي الله عنه said: How will it be
withdrawn from us while we have read the Qur’aan? And by Allaah, we will
continue to read it, and we will make our women to read it, as also our
children. He صلى الله عليه وسلم
said: “O Ziyaad! May your mother weep over you!
I took you for a learned man of Madeenah! This is the Torah and the Injeel with
the Jews and the Christians, but how do they benefit from it?” Jubayr reported that he then met `Ubaadah ibn
al-Saamit رضي الله عنه
and said to him: “Did you hear what your brother Abu al-Dardaa’ said?’ And he
(Jubayr) informed him of what Abu al-Dardaa’ had said. He (`Ubaadah) said: “Abu
al-Dardaa’ has spoken the truth. If you like, I will tell you of the first
(kind of) knowledge that will be taken away from the people, it is al-Khushoo`
(fear of Allaah/Humility)! Soon you will enter a Jaami` (the main) Masjid and
not find even a single man observing Khushoo`.”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2653) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

The
Companions first learned Imaan before the Qur’aan:
Jundub Ibn `Abdullaah al-Bajaly رضي الله عنه said: “We were youths around the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. We (first) learned Imaan (faith) and then we learned the
Qur’aan and it (the Qur’aan) increased our Imaan.”
[Sunan Ibn Maajah (61) and graded as “Saheeh” by
Shaikh al-Albaanee. Also authenticated by Shaikh Muqbil in “al-Saheeh al-Musnad”
(285) and Shaikh Zubair `Alee Zai]
***
In the version of Al-Baihaqee: on the authority of Jundub
رضي الله عنه
that he said: “We were youths around the
Messenger صلى الله
عليه وسلم. He صلى الله عليه وسلم would teach us Imaan before the Qur’aan; and then (later) he صلى الله عليه وسلم would teach us the Qur’aan. And it (the Qur’aan) increased our
Imaan. But as for you today, you are taught the Qur’aan before Imaan.”
[Al-Baihaqee in “Sunan al-Kubraa” (5292)]
***
`Abdullaah ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما said: “We lived during an instant of time in which one of us
would receive Imaan (faith) first before receiving the Qur’aan. And when the
Surahs were revealed to (Prophet) Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, we would learn what they permitted and what they prohibited
and what they commanded and what they forbade and what should be the stance
towards them. But I have seen many men, from whom one is given the Qur’aan
before Imaan, and he reads it from the opening of the Book to its closing and
he does not know what it orders and what it forbids and what should be his
stance towards it. He is like someone who is just throwing out dates [i.e., he
does not get any benefit from his recital].”
[Al-Haakim in his “al-Mustadrak” (101) said: “It is
Saheeh as per the condition of the Shaikhain (al-Bukhaaree and Muslim) and I do
not know of any defect in it, but they did not record it”, and al-Dhahabee
agreed with him. Also reported by al-Baihaqee in “Sunan al-Kubraa” (5290) and
the wordings are his.]

Hudhaifah (bin al-Yaamaan) رضي الله عنه said: “We are the (group of) people, who were given Imaan
before they were given the Qur’aan. And you are the (group of) people, who were
given the Qur’aan before they were given Imaan.”
[Al-Baihaqee in “Sunan al-Kubraa” (5291)]

`Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه said: “Whenever we used to learn (memorize) ten ayaat from the
Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم, we did not
pursue to learn the next ten ayaat which were revealed after it, till we
understood the meaning of what we had already learned.”
[Al-Haakim in “al-Mustadrak” (1/743), al-Baihaqee in “Sunan
al-Kubraa” (5289)]

How
do you teach them Imaan?
Narrated Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما: When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم sent Mu`aadh رضي الله عنه to Yemen, he said to
him: “You are going to a nation from the people
of the Scripture, so let the first thing to which you will invite them, be the
Tawheed of Allaah. If they learn that, tell them that Allaah has enjoined on
them, five prayers to be offered in one day and one night. And if they pray,
tell them that Allaah has enjoined on them Zakaah of their properties and it is
to be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor. And if they agree
to that, then take from them Zakaah but avoid the best property of the people.”
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1458, 7372) and Muslim (19). In
the version of Muslim it is: “the first thing you
to which you will invite them is ‘None has the right to be worshiped except
Allaah and that I am the Messenger of Allaah’.”]

Also Hadeeth Jibreel (the first Hadeeth of Saheeh Muslim)
is also another example of how to teach one the correct fundamental principles
of Islaam and Imaan.
