Some of the Western speakers misinterpret the Aayah # 105 of
Surah al-Baqarah to support their claim that not all Ahl al-Kitaab are Kaafir. Among
such people who spread this misunderstanding are Nouman Ali Khan, Hamza Yusuf
and others.
NOTE: This is a 4 part response to the claim that “not all
Ahl al-Kitaab are Kaafir” which were posted as different posts on Facebook over
the years.

PART 1:
Explanation
of Surah al-Baqarah (2), Aayah (105) by Shaikh Ibn al`Uthaymeen رحمه
الله:
For those who have already watched that (in)famous 3 minute
clip of Nouman Ali Khan where he used his logic to conclude that not ALL Ahl
al-Kitaab are Kaafir, this is the response from Shaikh al-`Uthaymeen's Tafseer.
{Neither those who disbelieve
among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) nor Al-Mushrikeen (the
disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah, idolaters, polytheists, pagans, etc.)
like that there should be sent down unto you any good from your Lord. But Allah
chooses for His Mercy whom He wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.}
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2):
105]
Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Saaleh al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
"The word ( ما ) here is for negation.
The word ( يود ) is with the meaning: “love” and (
الود ) means pure
love (i.e. from deep down).
The word ( مِن ) here is used to inform about the
“types” (of people) and it is not used as a quantifier (i.e. some are and some
are not). Therefore it renders the meaning that all the Ahl al-Kitaab are
Kuffaar.
And as for the phrase ( ولا المشركين ) it is conjugated with the saying
of Allaah (من أهل
الكتاب ), meaning: “Those who disbelieve, from these and these, do not
love…” That is why Allaah تعالى
said: ( ولا المشركين ) [wa laa al-Mushrikeen], this is
because if it were in conjunction with ( الذين كفروا ) {those who disbelieve}, then it
would have been with al-Raf` (i.e. instead of al-Mushrikeen it would have been
al-Mushrikoon).
So based on this, the word ( مِن )
is for the defining the types (of people); i.e. “Those who disbelieve from this
group – and they are the Ahl al-Kitaab – and similarly from (this group who
are) the Mushrikeen.”"

al-Baqarah by Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله]

PART 2:
Ahl
al-Kitaab (People of the Book) are Kaafir and will be ransom for the Believers
on the Day of Judgment:
Abu Musa' reported that Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
❝When it will be
the Day of Resurrection Allaah would deliver to every Muslim a Jew or a
Christian and say: That is your rescue from Hell-Fire.❞
📚 [Saheeh Muslim (6665)]
***
Abu Burda reported on the authority of his father that
Allaah's Apostleصلى الله عليه وسلم said:
❝No Muslim would die but Allaah
would admit in his stead a Jew or a Christian in Hell-Fire.❞
📚 [Saheeh Muslim (6666)]

PART 3:
“The
stage in-between the two stages”, between the Mu`tazilah and the
Soofees:
The Mu`tazilah (the deviated sect) came with the concept of
“a stage between two stages”; saying that a person who does major sins (like
adultery, gambling, drinking intoxicants) is neither a Muslim nor a Kaafir, he
is in-between the stage of being a Muslim and a Kaafir; and he will abide in
the Hellfire forever.
Similarly, nowadays, the likes of Hamza Yusuf has adopted
the same concept and applied it on the Jews and the Christians, saying that they
are neither Believers nor Kaafir, that they are in-between (i.e. they should
only be referred as “the people of the Book” and should not be called as
Kaafir).
Firstly, their acts of Kufr are mentioned throughout the
Qur’aan and they being Kaafir is clearly mentioned in Surah al-Maaidah (5): 72
and 73, as well as the whole of Surah al-Bayyinah (98). So there is no room for
discussion here in the first place. The one who opposes or rejects the Qur’aan
is himself in danger of falling into Kufr.
Secondly:
a. Can we pray offer
the funeral prayer for them? NO!
b. Can we seek
Allaah’s forgiveness for them? NO!
c. Can they be buried
in the Muslim graveyard? NO!
d. Can a Muslim
inherit from them? NO!
e. Can they inherit
from the Muslim? NO!
f. Can they enter
Makkah or Madeenah? NO!
g. Will they enter
Paradise if they die upon this Kufr? NO!
When the answer is NO, then why the need to differentiate
between them and the Kuffaar? All of them attribute partners to Allaah. All of
them attribute children to Allaah.
[The only difference
between the Ahl al-Kitaab and the Mushriks is that Allaah تعالى allowed the Muslims to eat their meat and
allowed the Muslim men to marry their women.]
Do not let the likes of these water down our religion!

PART 4:
Kaafir:
Their ruling in this World and in the Hereafter
But the moment the word Kaafir is mentioned, some people start believing
that we are damning them to Hell. What they fail to realize is that there are
two different issues involved here:
1)
Treating them as Kaafir.
2)
Damning them to Hell.
