Surah al-Qasas (28) is a Makkee Surah. One of the main themes of this Surah is about the Promise of Allaah and Victory from Him.
It is the promise of Allaah to Muhammad ﷺ: “O Muhammad! We will fulfill our promise to you as We had fulfilled it for Moosaa عليه السلام.”
When and how did Allaah fulfill the promise for Moosaa عليه السلام? Allaah تعالى said:
{And We inspired the mother
of Moosaa (saying): “Suckle him, but when you fear for him, then cast him into
the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to you and
shall make him one of (Our) Messengers.”}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 6]
Imagine a woman, pregnant, happy, and planning for her unborn child. Then all of a sudden, she receives the divine inspiration while she is still pregnant, that when you deliver the child, put the child in a box (chest, case), and cast the box away in the river.
[Some scholars said that she received the divine inspiration before delivering the child and some said it was after the delivery. And this divine inspiration could have in the form of a dream or that an Angel spoke to her like how the Angel had spoken with Maryam عليها السلام]
So, she prepared the box. The mother of Moosaa عليه السلام was a woman, a human being, a mother, who could never imagine that her child can be kept safe inside a box. But this is how Allaah تعالى Willed! So, when she delivered the child, Allaah تعالى instructed her, saying:
اقْذِفِيهِ فِي التَّابُوتِ
{Put him (the child) into the
Tabut (a box or a case or a chest)}
[Surah TaHa (20): 39]
So, she took the child and placed him in the box. Are the children safe inside the boxes? But this was a divine instruction from Allaah. So, like it or not, we must obey!
She did as she was instructed. The poor mother thought that the box will remain close to her, so that she can open the box and feed and take care of the baby whenever possible. But then the second command came, which was more severe than the first:
فَأَلْقِيهِ فِي الْيَمِّ
{and then cast him into the
river}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 6]
Placing the child in the box was one thing, but not to put the box in the river and cast it away?! Allaah تعالى did not tell her to place the box in the river, so that it might still be close to her, but rather, to cast it away! So, with the flow in the river the box floated away with the child inside it, and his sister followed the box.
Imagine now, O you parents – fathers and mothers – would you ever do that to your child, cast him away, alone, in the river or the sea?! If a child just catches a cold, the parents start pacing up and down the hospital corridors. So, imagine the fear on this mother, the mother of Moosaa عليه السلام, who carried this child for nine months in her womb, and when the child was born, she had to put that child in the box and cast the box in the river, fearing that water may get in the box, or that the waves my toss the box around and the child may drown.
She feared for the child! And this was a natural reaction. Then Allaah تعالى said:
{and do not fear}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 6]
But she was concerned and grieved over the situation that her child will be taken away from her, so Allaah تعالى said:
وَلَا تَخَافِي وَلَا تَحْزَنِي ۖ إِنَّا رَادُّوهُ إِلَيْكِ وَجَاعِلُوهُ مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
{and fear not, nor grieve.
Verily! We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our)
Messengers}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 6]
Allaah’s plan was so perfect that the last meal of the infant before leaving the house was his mother’s milk and the first meal of the infant upon returning was his mother’s milk. The infant rejected and refused all the other women who tried to feed him, the child refused to suckle from every other woman. It had to be his own mother or no one else.
Who returned Moosaa عليه السلام to his mother? It was Allaah سبحانه وتعالى!
Then in the same Surah, Allaah تعالى said to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
إِنَّ الَّذِي فَرَضَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لَرَادُّكَ
إِلَىٰ مَعَادٍ
{Verily, He (Allaah) Who has
given you (O Muhammad) the Qur’aan will surely bring you back to the Ma`aad
(place of return, i.e., to Makkah)}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 85]
Narrated Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما: ❝{will surely
bring you home} means: to Makkah.❞
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4773)]
“O Muhammad! The way you were expelled, We will indeed bring you back to Makkah!”
Allaah تعالى never says something except that He intends it, and He never intends something except that He accomplishes it, and He never promises something except that He fulfills it!
When was this Surah revealed to the Prophet ﷺ?! It was revealed to him ﷺ while he was migrating from Makkah to Madeenah.
Al-Dhahaak said: ❝When
the Prophet ﷺ
left Makkah for Madeenah, and when he reached al-Juhfah, he missed Makkah and
was yearning to return to it one day, so Allaah تعالى revealed this Aayah.❞
[Tafseer Ibn Abee Haatim and Tafseer Ibn Katheer]
Contemplate! The Prophet ﷺ was alone and there was no one with him except for Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, and Suraaqah Ibn Maalik was on the chase.
Suraaqah
said: ❝I ordered my slave-girl to
get my horse which was behind a hillock and keep it ready for me. Then I took
my spear and left by the back door of my house dragging the lower end of the
spear on the ground and keeping it low. Then I reached my horse, mounted it and
made it gallop. When I approached them (i.e., Muhammad and Abu Bakr), my horse
stumbled and I fell down from it, Then I stood up, got hold of my quiver and
took out the divining arrows and drew lots as to whether I should harm them
(i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)
and Abu Bakr) or not, and the lot which I disliked came out. But I remounted my
horse and let it gallop, giving no importance to the divining arrows. When I
heard the recitation of the Quran by Allaah's Messenger (ﷺ) who did not look
hither and thither while Abu Bakr was doing it often, suddenly the forelegs of
my horse sank into the ground up to the knees, and I fell down from it. Then I
rebuked it and it got up but could hardly take out its forelegs from the
ground, and when it stood up straight again, its forelegs caused dust to rise
up in the sky like smoke. Then again I drew lots with the divining arrows, and
the lot which I disliked, came out. So I called upon them to feel secure. They
stopped, and I remounted my horse and went to them. When I saw how I had been
hampered from harming them, it came to my mind that the cause of Allaah's Messenger
(ﷺ)
(i.e., Islaam) will become victorious. So, I said to him: "Your people
have assigned a reward equal to the blood money for your head." Then I
told them all the plans the people of Makkah had made concerning them. Then I
offered them some journey food and goods but they refused to take anything and
did not ask for anything, but the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ❝Do not tell others about us.❞ Then I requested him
to write for me a statement of security and peace. He ordered `Amr Ibn Fuhairah
who wrote it for me on a parchment, and then Allaah's Messenger (ﷺ) proceeded on his
way.❞
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3906)]
The notables of Makkah convened an emergency session to
determine the future course of action and explore all areas that could help
arrest the two men. They decided to block all avenues leading out of Makkah and
imposed heavy armed surveillance over all potential exits. A price of 100
camels was set upon the head of each one. Horsemen, infantry and tracers of
tracks scoured the country. Once they even reached the mouth of the cave where
the Prophet ﷺ
and Abu Bakr were hiding. When he saw the enemy at a very close distance, Abu
Bakr whispered to the Prophet ﷺ:
"What, if they were to look through the crevice and detect us?" The
Prophet ﷺ
in calmly replied: ❝Silence O Abu Bakr! What do you think of those two with
whom the Third is Allaah.❞
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim]
It was really a Divine miracle, for the chasers were only a few steps from the cave. Allaah تعالى said:
{If you help him (Muhammad)
not (it does not matter), for Allaah did indeed help him when the disbelievers
drove him out, the second of two, when they (Muhammad ﷺ and Abu
Bakr) were in the cave, and he (ﷺ) said to his companion (Abu Bakr): “Be not sad (or afraid),
surely Allaah is with us.” Then Allaah sent down His Sakeenah (calmness,
tranquility, peace, etc.) upon him, and strengthened him with forces (Angels)
which you saw not; and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while
the word of Allaah (always remains) supreme. And Allaah is All-Mighty,
All-Wise.}
[Surah Tawbah (9): 40]
This Surah (al-Qasas) is clear in its message, that the promise of Allaah will never fail, and what He تعالى will fulfill what He promised. It is like Allaah تعالى said to the Prophet ﷺ: “Be assured O Muhammad! The way Moosaa was sent out, you will be sent out; Moosaa was made to leave, and you will be made to leave; and We promised Moosaa with the return, victory, support, and superiority over his opponents. Similarly O Muhammad! We will return you to Makkah with victory, support and superiority.”
See how Allaah تعالى responded to the mother of Moosaa عليه السلام:
فَرَدَدْنَاهُ إِلَىٰ أُمِّهِ كَيْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ وَلِتَعْلَمَ أَنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
{So did We restore him to his
mother, that she might be delighted, and that she might not grieve, and that
she might know that the Promise of Allaah is true. But most of them know not.}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 13]
Verily, the Promise of Allaah is true, but most of mankind know not.
The way Allaah تعالى promised His Prophet ﷺ, and the way He promised Moosaa عليه السلام, He تعالى has promised victory for His true Believers, as Allaah تعالى said:
وَلَا تَهِنُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَنتُمُ الْأَعْلَوْنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
{So do not become weak
(against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you
are indeed (true) believers.}
[Surah Aal-`Imraan (3): 139]
