Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said:
“A sinner does not go out of Faith (Imaan)[1] unlike what the Khawaarij and the Mu`tazilah say
because of the saying of Allaah تعالى:
﴿وَإِن
طَائِفَتَانِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْتَتَلُوا﴾
{And if two parties or groups
among the believers fall to fighting…} [Surah al-Hujuraat (49):9] [2]
What is obligatory is that when evil appears, then we
should try to reconcile between the disputing parties and that we hold the
oppressor and prevent him (from oppressing others) and we should help the
oppressed till the discord is extinguished. And this is what al-Hassan Ibn
`Alee رضي الله عنهما did when he waived off his rights to
Mu`aawiyah رضي الله عنه.” [3][4]

[1] Declaring someone a
Kaafir is not a job for the layman. Then there are certain criteria and
conditions which have to be met. Moreover, the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah are
unanimous that Major Sins like murder, gambling, consuming intoxicants etc. does
not take one out of the fold of Islaam. At the time of sinning his Faith will
decrease but he will not be considered as a Kaafir.
[2] {And if two parties or groups among the believers fall to
fighting, then make peace between them both, but if one of them rebels against
the other, then fight you (all) against the one that which rebels till it
complies with the Command of Allah; then if it complies, then make
reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable. Verily! Allah loves those
who are equitable.} [Surah al-Hujuraat (49):9]
[3] Narrated Abu Bakrah رضي الله عنه: Once the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم
brought out Al-Hasan رضي الله عنه and took him up
the pulpit along with him and said: “This son of
mine is a Saiyyid (i.e. a chief) and I hope that Allaah will help him bring
about reconciliation between two Muslim groups.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3629)]
[4] Narrated Abu Umaamah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4800) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
