Scrutinize before narrating

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

It is reported on the authority of Yazeed bin Mujaalid al-Mu`abbarah: I heard Yahya bin Ma`een رحمه الله saying:

When you write, gather (everything); and when you narrate, scrutinize (verify it before narrating).

📚 [Tahdheeb Al-Kamaal by Al-Mizzee (31/549)]

🌴🌴🌴

📑 Note:

🚩 Firstly, this advice of Imaam Yahya Ibn Ma`een رحمه الله to gather and write (everything) is for the students of knowledge and the people who are proficient in the field of Hadeeth and Asmaa wal-Rijaal.

🚩 As for the common people, it his highly advised that they do not read anything and everything that they find online. Rather, they should first look at the source of this information.

1. Is the person or page which is sharing this information reliable?
2. Has the reference been mentioned?

🌴🌴🌴

Those who have the means should scrutinize it even further:
3. Is the reference correct?
4. Is the translation correct?
5. Is the statement correctly attributed to the person?

🚫🔥 [Many times it is seen that people attribute statements to the scholars - which they (the scholars) have never said - and make a false reference to make it seem authentic. Example: Sometimes statements are attributed to Shaikh al-Albaanee that he said such-and-such and the reference quoted is “al-Saheehah”. But upon verifying, one will not find that statement in any of the Shaikh’s books.]

🌴🌴🌴

There are four issues that one comes across:

1. Statement is quoted but the reference is missing.
2. Statement is correct but the referencing is wrong.
3. Reference is mentioned but the statement is wrong.
4. Statement is wrong and the reference is wrong.

🌴🌴🌴

Once these steps are taken, and it is verified to be true or authentic, only then should one share that information.

Ibn al-Mubaarak رحمه الله said:
The Isnaad (the chain of narration) is from the Deen. If not for the Isnaad, anyone could say whatever he wanted.

Ibn Sireen رحمه الله said:
Indeed, this knowledge (of Isnaad) is from the (foundation of this) Deen; so look from whom you take (learn) your religion.
