بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد
This post is a reply from the daughter of Shaikh al-Albaanee in defense of her father to all those who accuse him of Irjaa’ [1].
Comments of my Father, the Imaam, Al-Albaanee رحمه الله on the Hadeeth: “Hasten to perform (good) deeds…”
All praise be to Allaah, and the blessing and peace be upon the final Messenger of Allaah, Muhammad, and his family and companions and those who follow his path.
To proceed:
My father رحمه الله said in one of his lectures while explaining “al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb”, cassette (57b)[2]:
We read today in the book, al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb, of Haafidh al-Mudhiree, Hadeeth no. Twenty Eight, he said:
On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night. During (that stormy period) a man would be a Believer in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening or he would be a Believer in the evening and an unbeliever in the morning, selling his faith for worldly things.” [Saheeh Muslim (169)]
This Hadeeth is a warning from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to his Ummah about the Fitan (trials), which the minds cannot conceive. Great Trials! “which would be like a part of the dark night”, by which the Muslims will be tried. He would be a Believer in the morning and by evening would become a Kaafir, and vice-versa (i.e. he would be a Believer in the evening, but would become a Kaafir by the morning).
And His صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: “Hasten to perform deeds”, meaning: good deeds. He صلى الله عليه وسلم is prompting his Ummah (to do good deeds), especially in the times of the later generations which, with the passing of time, are getting closer (to the prophecy). The more the time passes, the more the trials and the more close we get to the Major Signs of the (approaching) Hour (i.e. the Day of Judgment). The Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم in this Authentic Hadeeth, is instructing us to hasten to do good deeds before we are overtaken by these trials, i.e. we face them with righteous deeds. So that if these (Fitan - trials) come upon us all of a sudden, we can face them armed with our righteous deeds which we had done previously. And that these righteous deeds (by Allaah’s Will) will come in between us and the trials so that we do not fall into these trials which are described as: “which would be like a part of the dark night”.
The fortification for the Muslims from any one of these trials which have been mentioned in this Hadeeth in general terms – or any other trials which we will discuss in the other Hadeeth – so the protection from all of these trials are: righteous deeds. The righteous deeds shields and fortifies the Muslim from (falling into it) when he passes through these unusual phases which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم described as:
“During (that stormy period) a man would be a Believer in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening or he would be a Believer in the evening and an unbeliever in the morning.”
And the Reason (for all this)?
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم explained this in his statement:
“selling his faith” for a miserable price “for” attaining the vanities (or transient things) of the “world”.
The likes of this Hadeeth are not difficult to understand, for we see (around us) how people are put into trials while seeking the worldly things like high positions, ranks, offices and similar things.
Therefore, it is upon the Muslims to protect themselves with righteous deeds.
There is no doubt and no confusion that righteous deeds – which we have mentioned to you time and again – do not benefit the doer at all till he combines these righteous deeds with the correct Imaan; and the Imaan is not be correct till it complies with the Imaan described by Allaah نعالى (in His Book) and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and with the correct understanding which the Righteous Salaf of this Ummah were upon – and from them are the four Major Imaams.
It is not allowed for a Muslim to be satisfied with his righteous deeds – with which he seeks success on the Day of Judgment – while at the same time he neglects correcting his `Aqeedah. This state of his (with the wrong `Aqeedah) would render his good deeds void, as our Lord Allaah تعالى said about the Mushriks in His Book:
{وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَى مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاء مَّنثُورًا}
{And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed} [Surah al-Furqaan (25): 23]
That is why we should forever and ever remind ourselves that whenever we pass by (an Aayah) mentioning about doing righteous deeds, we should always remember: the correct Imaan (along with it). That is why, (as a general) there is no Aayah except that it begins with mentioning Imaan (first) and then followed by mentioning righteous deeds, like the saying of Allaah تعالى:
{وَالْعَصْرِ * إِنَّ الإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ * إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ}
{By Al-`Asr (the time). * Verily, man is in loss, * except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience} [Surah al`Asr (103): 1-3]
I say this because in our time, (people of) desires and innovations have increased. Some of these (innovations) we have seen, have been going on for generations and generations, while others have popped-up in our generation. That is why, the most important thing upon a Muslim to worry about is: correcting his own `Aqeedah; thereafter combining with that: doing more good deeds. This is because Imaan does not mean having the correct understanding only, but also doing good deeds is a part of Imaan.
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in this Hadeeth is urging us to precede these trials with righteous deeds. He صلى الله عليه وسلم is urging us to this so that it becomes a barrier and a fortified fortress between us and these trials. These righteous deeds (by Allaah’s Will) will prevent us from falling into the likes of these dark trials in which “a man would be a Believer in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening or he would be a Believer in the evening and an unbeliever in the morning, selling his faith for worldly things.”
With this, what was desired has been conveyed. This is one of the many examples [3] and conclusive evidence, highlighting the correct Manhaj of my father, the Muhaddith of his era, even if the ignorant try to defame him.

[1] Irjaa’ is the false `Aqeedah that Imaan is nothing but to profess it with the heart only (and that confession with the tongue and actions with the limbs are not a part of it). They claim this acceptance of the heart never wavers, so according to them, the wicked and just are both at the same level of Eemaan, concluding that the Eemaan of the Prophets and the common Muslims is the same.
For the correct `Aqeedah see the post:
[2] And this is also in the beginning of the cassette (263) of “al-Mutafarriqaat” and cassette (85) from “Fataawa Syria”.
[3] Meaning, this is not the only time (that my father has spoken about this). The evidences which clear my father رحمه الله from the accusation of Irjaa’ are already known. This one is only an addition to it.
