Abu Dardaa' رضي الله عنه and his constant fear of hypocrisy.

بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد

The Haafidh, the Imaam, Shams-uddeen al-Dhahabee رحمه الله mentioned in Siyar A`laam al-Nubalaa’:

On the authority of Jubair bin Nufair that he heard Abu Dardaa’ رضي الله عنه at the end of his prayer, after he had completed his Tashahhud, seeking Allaah’s refuge from hypocrisy. He increasingly (and repeatedly) sought refuge in Him from it.

Jubair said to him: “O Abu Dardaa’! What is this between you and hypocrisy?”

Abu Dardaa’ said: “Leave me alone! Leave me alone! By Allaah! Within an hour a person can turn away from his religion and abandon it.”

Imaam al-Dhahabee said: The Chain of this narration is “Saheeh”.

Imaam al-Dhahabee also said: And from minor hypocrisy is: A person utters a word (carelessly), without thinking of its gravity, nor thinking that it will reach such a magnitude, and because of that he will be thrown into the Hellfire the distance of seventy years. [1]

As for major hypocrisy: even though a person is convinced that he is a Muslim, he is still obliged to seek Allaah’s refuge from hypocrisy and Shirk, For he doesn’t know how his end will be. Maybe he might be a Believer in the morning but by evening he becomes a Kaafir. We seek Allaah’s refuge from this.

[1] A Hadeeth with a similar meaning has been reported by Imaam al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh (6478):

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “A slave (of Allaah) may utter a word which pleases Allaah without giving it much importance, and because of that Allaah will raise him to degrees (of reward): and a slave (of Allah) may utter a word (carelessly) which displeases Allaah without thinking of its gravity and because of that he will be thrown into the Hell-Fire.”
