Hadeeth #1: If a person dies in this state, he would die upon
Fitrah
The Prophet ﷺ
said to me:
❝Whenever you go to bed perform ablution like that for the
prayer, lie on your right side and say:
“Allaahumma aslamtu wajhee
ilaika, wa fauwaḌhtu amree
ilaika, wa alja’tu Żhahree ilaika raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika. Laa Malja’a wa
laa manjaa minka illaa ilaika. Allaahumma aamantu bi kitaabika-l-ladhee anzalta
wa bi nabiyyika-l ladhee arsalta”
(O Allaah! I surrender to You
and entrust all my affairs to You and depend upon You for Your Blessings both
with hope and fear of You. There is no fleeing from You, and there is no place
of protection and safety except with You O Allaah! I believe in Your Book (the
Qur’aan) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) whom You have
sent).
Then if you die on that very
night, you will die with Fiṫrah (i.e. Faith or the religion of Islaam). Let the
aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep).❞
I repeated it before the Prophet ﷺ and when I reached: “Allaahumma
amantu bi kitaabika-l-ladhee anzalta (O Allah I believe in Your Book which You
have revealed).” I said: "Wa-rasoolika (and your Apostle).” The Prophet ﷺ
said: ❝No, (but rather say): “Wa Nabiyyika-l-ladhee arsalta (Your
Prophet whom You have sent).❞
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (247, 6311) and Saheeh Muslim (6544). In
another narration, it is ❝Nafsee❞ instead of ❝Wajhee❞]
Hadeeth #2: If he gets up in the night and
supplicates, his supplication will be answered.
The Prophet ﷺ
said:
❝There is no Muslim who sleeps remembering Allaah, and in
a state of purity, then wakes up at night, and asks Allaah for good in this
world and in the Hereafter, but He (تعالى)
will give him that.❞
[Sunan Abu Dawood (3042) and the wordings are his, and Sunan
Ibn Maajah (3881) graded as “Saheeh” by
Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Note: One of the Du`aas while turning over in the bed
`Aaishah
narrated that whenever the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم turned over during
the night (in his sleep), he used to say:
لا إله إلا الله الواحد القهار، رب السماوات والأرض وما بينهما
العزيز الغفار
Laa ilaaha illaallaahu-l-waahidu-l-qahhaaru,
rabbu s-samaawaati wa-l-ardi wa mâ baynahumâ-l-cazîzu-l-ghaffar.
❝None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, The
One, AL-Qahhar. Lord of the heavens and the Earth and all between them, The
Exalted in Might, The Oft-Forgiving.❞
[Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan (5530) and Musdatrak of al-Haakim (1980)
and graded as “Saheeh as per the conditions of
Imaam al-Bukhaaree” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Saheehah (2066)]
Hadeeth #3: The Angel supplicates for his forgiveness
whenever he turns in bed.
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of
Allaah ﷺ
said:
❝Whoever spends (the night) in a state of purity
(ablution), an Angel spends the night in his Shi`aar*. He (the person) does
not wake up in the hour of the night except that that Angel (supplicates)
saying: “O Allaah! Forgive Your slave, so-and-so, for he has spent the night in
purification.”❞
[Ibn al-Mubaarak in al-Zuhd (1244), and from his chain by
Ibn al-Hibbaan in his Saheeh (1051) and graded as “Hasan”
by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Saheehah (2539)]
Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنه said that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
❝Purify these bodies, May Allaah purify you. Whenever a
slave spends his night in a state of purity, an angel spends the night in his Shi`aar* and he does not turn
over during the night except that he (the angel) says: “O Allah, forgive Your
slave, for he went to sleep in a state of purification.”❞
[al-Tabaraanee in al-Kabeer (13620, 13621) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Saheehah
(6/90-91) and Saheeh al-Jaami` (3936) and Saheeh al-Targheeb (597, 599)]
*Al-Shi`aar [الشعار – The thing which is
used to cover a person’s body (like clothes, sheet etc.)]
Note: Some English
websites have mistranslated the word Shi`aar as hair. They have confused the
word al-Shi`aar (الشعار)
with al-Sha`r (الشعر).
