From the signs of rudeness...

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه said:
Four things are from rudeness:

1) that a person urinates while standing; [1]

2) that a person prays while people are passing in front of him, and he does not have a Sutrah in front of him to act as a barrier between him and the people; [2]

3) that a person wipes the dust (or soil) off his face (or forehead) while he is still in prayer; [3]

4) and that he hears the Muadhdhin (saying the Adhaan) but he does not repeat after him. [4]

[Sunan al-Kubraa of al-Baihaqee (3552) and Shaikh al-Albaanee graded it as “Saheeh” as a statement of Ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه in “al-Irwaa” (1/97). Also reported in Mu`jam al-Kabeer of al-Tabaraanee (9501, 9502, 9503) and Musannaf of Ibn Abee Shaibah (4716) with a different chain]

Translator’s Notes:

[1] Ruling on urinating while standing

Q: Is it Halaal (lawful) or Haraam (prohibited) to urinate while standing?

A: All Praise is due to Allaah Alone and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, his family and Companions. To commence:

It is not Haraam to urinate while standing, but it is a Sunnah to urinate while sitting, as `Aaishah رضي الله عنها said: “If anyone tells you that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to urinate while standing up, do not believe him, for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم always used to urinate while sitting”*, as this entails modesty and caution of being soiled with urine.

It was narrated from `Umar, `Alee, Ibn `Umar and Zayd ibn Thaabit رضي الله عنهم that there is a Rukhsah (concession) in urinating while standing, as (Imaam) al-Bukhaaree and (Imaam) Muslim narrated (in their respected Saheeh) that Hudhaifah رضي الله عنه said: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came to the dumping ground belonging to some tribe, and urinated while standing.”** This does not conflict with the Hadith of `Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace be upon him) might have done this because he was in a place where he could not sit, or in order to show that urinating while standing is not Haram. However, the basic rule concerning this is what was mentioned by `Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to urinate while sitting. It is a Sunnah (commendable act), not a Wajib (obligatory).

May Allaah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

[2] Praying while facing the Sutrah is Mustahab (desirable – and not obligatory). This is the opinion of Shaikh Ibn Baaz and Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمهم الله.

After quoting the evidences of both sides (those who say it is Waajib and those who say it is Mustahab), Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله, said: “The evidence of those who say that the Sutrah is Sunnah – and they are the majority – is stronger, and this is the more correct opinion.”
[al-Sharh al-Mumti` of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (3/277)]

[3] It is disliked to wipe the forehead before completing the prayer.

Q: We heard those who say: ‘It is disliked to wipe the dust off the forehead (including the nose) after finishing the prayer.” Is there any basis for this?

Shaikh Ibn Baaz: As per what we know, there is no basis for this. What is disliked is to wipe the forehead (including the nose)before saying the Salaam (i.e. before completing the prayer), as it has been authentically reported regarding some of the prayers of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that he finished the morning Salaah (i.e. Fajr) by saying the Salaam, on the night in which it had rained, and the traces of water and mud were visible on his صلى الله عليه وسلم face.* So, from this it is established that it is better not to wipe the forehead before one finishes the prayer.

*Narrated Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudree رضي الله عنه: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم used to practice I`tikaaf (in the Masjid) in the middle third of Ramadhaan and after passing the twenty nights he used to go back to his house on the 21st, and the people who were in I`tikaaf with him also used to go back to their houses. Once in Ramadhaan, in which he practiced I`tikaaf, he established the night prayers at the night in which he used to return home, and then he addressed the people and ordered them whatever Allaah wished him to order and said: I used to practice I`tikaaf for these ten days (i.e. the middle third but now I intend to stay in I`tikaaf for the last ten days (of the month); so whoever was in I`tikaaf with me should stay at his place of seclusion. I have verily been shown (the date of) this Night (of Qadr) but I have forgotten it. So search for it in the odd nights of the last ten days (of this month). I also saw myself (in the dream) prostrating in mud and water. On the night of the 21st, the sky was covered with clouds and it rained, and the rainwater started leaking through the roof of the Masjid at the praying place of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. I saw with my own eyes, the Prophet at the completion of the Morning Prayer, leaving with his face covered with mud and water. So it was the confirmation of that dream.
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (669, 813, 836, 2016, 2018 2027, 2036, 2040) and Saheeh Muslim]

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله reported that al-Humaidee said: “From this Hadeeth it is established that one should not wipe (the dust off) the forehead (including the nose) while praying. Rather, he should do it after completing the prayer as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was seen with the traces of water (and mud) on his forehead after completing the prayer.”

I (Ibn Taymiyyah) say: “Scholars, like Imaam Ahmad and others, have disliked that one should wipe off the soil or dust from the forehead while praying, or whatever sticks to the forehead while doing the Sujood (prostration). But they differed regarding wiping it after completing the prayer into two views. And both these views have been reported from Imaam Ahmad.”
[Majmoo` al-Fataawa of Ibn Taymiyyah (22/171)]

Q: I have a friend who often advises me not to wipe the forehead after the prayer - after some of the things from the rug (or floor) of the Masjid stick to it. He used to say to me: “This is an honor and light on your face.” But I think within myself that it would be considered as Riyaa’ (showing off) (if I do not wipe it off).

A: There is no problem in removing/wiping off the things, like dust or soil, from the forehead after completing the prayer. And leaving it (on the forehead after completing the prayer) is not considered as a Sunnah.

May Allaah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

[4] Narrated Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree رضي الله عنه: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Whenever you hear the Adhaan, repeat what the Muadhdhin is saying.
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (611) and Saheeh Muslim (383)]

Narrated `Abdullaah bin `Amr رضي الله عنهما: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: When you hear the Muadhdhin, repeat what he says. Then send Salaah upon me, because whoever sends Salaah upon me, Allaah will send Salaah upon him ten times due to it. Then ask Allaah that He gives me al-Waseelah, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allaah’s servants, and I hope that I may be the one. If anyone asks Allaah that I be given the Waseelah, he will be assured my intercession.
[Saheeh Muslim (384)]

Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله viewed it to be Mustahab to repeat the Adhaan after the Muadhdhin and not Waajib. He said: Even if a person intentionally does not repeat after the Muadhdhin, he will not be sinful. And this is the correct opinion.
[al-Sharh al-Mumti` of Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (3/277)]

What to say when one hears the Adhaan (call to prayer):

1. When the Adhaan is being called, the Sunnah is to listen to it attentively and repeat every line silently after the Muadhdhin, but when he says: “Hayya `alaa-Salaah” and “Hayya `alaa-l-Falaah” (حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ) one should say:

لا حولا ولا قوّة إلّا باللّه
Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah
(There is no might or power except with Allaah)

2. Invoking Allaah to send blessings upon the Prophet

(Allaahumma salli `alaa Muhammadin wa `alaa aali Muhammad, kamaa sallayta `alaa Ibraaheema wa `alaa aali Ibraaheem, innaka Hameedum-Majeed. Allaahumma baarik `alaa Muhammadin wa `alaa aali Mohammad kamaa baarakta `alaa Ibraaheema wa `alaa aali Ibraaheem, innaka Hameedum-Majeed)

(O Allaah! Sent Salaah upon Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have sent Salaah upon Ibraaheem and upon the family of Ibraaheem, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allaah! Bless Muhammad and the family of Mohammad as You have blessed Ibraaheem and the family of Ibraaheem, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious).
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3370)]

3. After the Adhaan, it is also recommended to say the following Du`aa:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ، وَالصَّلاَةِ القَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الوَسِيلَةَ وَالفَضِيلَةَ، وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ

Allaahumma rabba haadhihi-d-da`awati-t-taammati wa-s-Saalati-l-qaa’imati, aati Muhammadan-il-waseelata wa-l-fadheelata wa-b`ath-hu maqaamam-mahmoodan illadhee wa`adtahu

(O Allaah! Lord of this most perfect call, and of the Prayer that is about to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him of.)

Jaabir Ibn `Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما said: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Whoever after listening to the Adhaan says… (the above mentioned Du`aa), then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection.
[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (614, 4719)]

4. After the Adhaan, one is also encouraged to say:

Sa`d Ibn Abu Waqqaas رضي الله عنه reported: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: He who says after the Adhaan:

أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأن محمدًا عبده ورسوله، رضيت بالله ربًا وبالإسلام دينًا

'Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah Wah-dahu laa shareeka Lahu; wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhoo wa Rasooluhu, radheetu Billaahi Rabban, wa bi Muhammadin Rasoolan, wa bil Islaami Dinan

(I testify that there is no one worthy of being worshiped except Allaah Alone; He has no partners and that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is His slave and Messenger; I am content with Allaah as my Rabb, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islaam as my Deen), his sins will be forgiven.
[Saheeh Muslim (386)]

5. Making Du`aa in between the Adhaan and Iqaamah

It was narrated that Anas رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Du`aa is not rejected between the Adhaan and Iqaamah, so engage in Du`aa (supplication).
[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (212), Sunan Abu Dawood (521) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Narrated `Abdullah Ibn `Amr Ibn al-`Aas رضي الله عنهما: A man said: O Messenger of Allaah! The Muadhdhins have been favored over us. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Say (the same words) as they say, and when you come to the end, supplicate (whatever you wish) and it will be granted to you.
[Sunan Abu Dawood (521) and graded as “Hasan-Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
