Fatwaa feel-'Aqeedah:
The Statement:
Verily Allaah is Everywhere
Al-Imaam Ibn Baaz رحمه الله
Question: A story was mentioned on one of the
radio broadcasts which stated that a son asked his father about Allaah, so the
father responded saying that Allaah is present everywhere...
Answer: This answer is false, and it is
from the speech of the people of innovations, from the Jahmiyyah and the
Mu`tazilah (two deviant groups), and whoever follows their footsteps.
And that which is correct is what Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah is upon,
that Allaah سبحانه وتعالى is above
the heavens, over the Throne (Al-`Arsh), above all of His creation, and
His Knowledge is everywhere. This is just as is proven by the Qur’aanic verses,
and the Prophetic Ahaadeeth, and the consensus of the Salaf
(predecessors) of the Ummah (Muslim nation). This is as Allaah عز وجل
said:
{Verily your Lord is Allaah, the one Who created the
heavens and the earth in six days, then He ascended over the Throne.} [Surah
Al-A`raaf (7):24]
And
He سبحانه وتعالى repeated that in six other verses from His Magnificent
Book.
And the meaning of Al-Istiwaa’ with Ahlus-Sunnah is Al-`Uloo (Loftiness) and Al-Irtifaa` (Elevation) above the Throne, in a manner which befits the Majesty of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى. No one knows how it is other than Him. This is as Maalik رحمه الله said when he was asked about that he said:
“Al-Istiwaa
(Allaah's ascension) is known, and the how of it is unknown, and to believe in
it is obligatory, and asking about it is an innovation (Bid`ah).”
And
he رحمه الله meant
asking about how it is. And this meaning came from his Shaikh, Rabee`ah bin
Abee `Abdir-Rahmaan, and it has been related from Umm Salamah رضي الله
عنها, and it is the statement
of all of Ahlus-Sunnah from the Sahaaabah (the Prophet's companions – رضي الله عنهم) and
those who came after them from the Imaams of Islaam. And indeed Allaah سبحانه وتعالى informed that He is above the heavens in other verses as
well, and that He is in loftiness. He said:
{So the judgment is for Allaah, the Most High, the Most
Great.} [Surah Al-Ghaafir (40):12]
And
He سبحانه وتعالى said:
{Unto Him ascends the good speech, and the righteous
action raises it.} [Surah Faatir (35):10]
And
He تعالى
said:
{And He feels no fatigue in their (the heavens and earth)
preservation, and He is the Most High, the Most Magnificent.} [Surah
Al-Baqarah (2):255]
And
He عز وجل
said:
{Or do you all feel safe against He who is above the
heavens that He might make the earth swallow you up, then behold it shakes. Or
do you all feel safe that He who is above the heavens might send upon you all a
violent whirlwind? Then you shall know how (terrible) was My warning.} [Surah
Al-Mulk (67):16-17]
Thus, in numerous verses from the Noble Book of Allaah, He makes it clear that He is above the heavens, and that He is in loftiness. And that agrees with what is proven by the verses of Al-Istiwaa’ (Allaah’s ascension). And with that it is known that the statement of the people of innovations, that Allaah is present everywhere, is from the most false of falsehood, and it is the way of the Hulooliyyah (those who believe Allaah dwells within his creatures), who are innovators and astray. Rather, it is disbelief and misguidance, and it is denial of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى and denying His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, in what is authentic from him regarding his Lord being above the heavens. For example, like his saying:
“Do you all not trust me, while I am the one trusted by
He Who is above the heavens?” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim]
And
similar to this has come in the Ahaadeeth regarding Al-Israa’ (the
Prophet's night journey to Jerusalem), and Al-Mi`raaj (the Prophet's
ascension into the heavens), and other reports besides these.
